Book description:  A sweeping historical romance about a witch who foresees her own murder--and the one boy who can help change her future.

Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island's whalers safe at sea, but her mother has forced her into a magic-free world of proper manners and respectability. When Avery dreams she's to be murdered, she knows time is running out to unlock her magic and save herself.

Avery finds an unexpected ally in a tattooed harpoon boy named Tane--a sailor with magic of his own, who moves Avery in ways she never expected. Becoming a witch might stop her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers her magic requires a sacrifice she never prepared for.

My thoughts:Avery wants to be the witch of Prince Island. It is in her blood and her birth right. For generations the Roe women have used their craft to help and curse the sailors who visit or live on the Island.

Avery's mother rejects the gift, setting a sting of events in motion that forever change the role of the witch of the Island. Avery is cursed and cannot return to her grandmother to continue training.

In the process of trying to claim her right as the witch, Avery has a dream in which she will be killed. She knows that it is coming and looking for an answer to break the future she has foreseen. In order to do this she enlists the help of a young man, Tane, they help each other.

This book is full of dreams left unfulfilled. The story has a sad feeling throughout. The book is written from Avery's viewpoint. She is not happy with life as it has been handed to her. She is always longing for something more and not appreciative of what she has.

The book is well written. It is interesting. It is good. This is a book that makes you think, it's not a book to be read quickly and forgotten.
