*Family Welcome

Hero (Woodcutter Sisters #2)Hero
by Alethea Kontis
Hardcover, 304 Pages
To be published October 1st, 2013 by Harcourt Books

Rough and tumble Saturday Woodcutter thinks she's the only one of her sisters without any magic—until the day she accidentally conjures an ocean in the backyard. With her sword in tow, Saturday sets sail on a pirate ship, only to find herself kidnapped and whisked off to the top of the world.

Is Saturday powerful enough to kill the mountain witch who holds her captive and save the world from sure destruction? And, as she wonders grumpily, "Did romance have to be part of the adventure?"

As in Enchanted, readers will revel in the fragments of fairy tales that embellish this action-packed story of adventure and, yes, romance.

Enchanted by Alethea Kontis
Enchanted (Woodcutter Sisters #1)
Hardcover, 305 pages
Published May 8, 2012

It isn't easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.

When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past - and hers?

Book Review ~ "Tied" by Laney McMann

TIED (A Fire Born Novel, #1)TIED by Laney McMann
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: YA fantasy

Book Description: Normal people don't believe their nightmares stalk them. They don’t fall in love with boys who don’t exist, either.

Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.

Or is that all in her head?

Layla doesn't know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.

No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?

The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.

In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.

Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?

The answer may never be far enough ... away.

My thoughts: This was an interesting book. It starts out with a mystery theme. Layla is undergoing changes and having nightmares that all haunt her. Her family and friends are keeping secrets and hiding the truth. She tries to get answers, but all stop at her mother.

She had a childhood friend named Max. He left and everyone told her that he never existed, he was a figment of her imagination. She believed them until he walked into the door of a store she was at. She instantly recognized him and the door was opened that her mother had shut when she was a child.

Max and Layla are twin souls. Their fates and futures are tied. They cannot be whole without the other. I don't want to say too much more about the plot of the story, it would give away the mystery that shrouds the beginning.

I was interested in the story, at times I felt like I couldn't grasp what just happened in a scene. I'm not sure if it was reader error, or if there were a few gaps in the story.  I found myself skimming some sections.  I participated in a blog tour a few days ago.  There is a giveaway with the tour.  Here is the link if you would like to enter. http://lisaisabookworm.blogspot.com/2013/09/blog-tour-tied-by-laney-mcmann-giveaway.html

This book contains violence, kissing, and mild swearing.

BLURB

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

Home Matters by Julie N. Ford

According to her mother, Olivia Pembroke was born to be a star. But how is she supposed to be famous when she can't even get a decent acting gig? Her lucky break comes when she lands an audition for a wildly popular home improvement show. Even though she has no design training and has never even held a power tool, she refuses to let that stop her. She's confident that her destiny is finally within reach.

When her affections are torn between her heartthrob co-host and the irritating, yet somehow endearing lead contractor, does she continue to reach for the stars? Or does she design a new happily ever after? One that leads not to the fading lights of fame and fortune, but to a love that will burn forever.

Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin

Drew Westfall wants nothing more than to forget what he had to do in the name of "smart" business. Cutting off all ties with his parents—including handing over the entire contents of his trust fund to a charity—he takes off for Bridger, Colorado where his best friend has an extra room for him. It doesn't take long for him to realize that his business degree won’t do him much good in a town as small as Bridger, but he's broke and has nowhere else to go.

Eden Torresi has every reason to wallow. Not only did she lose her mother, but she had to drop out of nursing school and is in a relationship with a guy unwilling to commit. But Eden isn't the wallowing type. Instead, she chooses to spend most of her time taking care of the seniors at Silver Linings Nursing home. When she learns that her boyfriend's new roommate is down on his luck, her caring nature makes her want to reach out to him and offer what help she can. But the more time they spend together, the more complicated things get, especially when the seniors of Silver Linings decide to play matchmaker.

Righting a Wrong by Rachael Anderson

Seven years ago, Cambri Blaine fled her small hometown of Bridger, Colorado after her senior year ended in a fiasco. Only Jace Sutton knew the real reason why—that she was a spineless coward. Now, seven years later, her father's been in an accident and needs help, and Cambr has no choice but to return home. So with trepidation, she takes a leave of absence from the landscape architecture firm where she works and boards a plane, hoping against hope that Jace is no longer around and that the past can stay where it belongs—in the past.

If only life worked that way.

Jace never expected to see Cambri again. After she’d led him on, bruised his heart, and left town without a backward glance, he was forced to pick up the pieces and try not to hate her for it. Eventually, he put it behind him and moved on, creating a life for himself in his beloved hometown. But now that Cambri is back and looking more beautiful and sophisticated than ever, some of those old feelings resurface, and Jake instinctively knows, for the sake of his heart, that he needs to avoid her at all costs.

If only it were that easy.

Lost and Found by Karey White

Lydia was supposed to have an adventurous and exciting summer. Instead she's done nothing more than read and eat takeout. Now it's time to go home, and what does she have to show for it? A big fat nothing. Unless, of course, her trip to the airport somehow turns into something more than just a flight home.

Blake feels like he's been sent on a wild goose chase. While work is piling up back in Denver, he's on the other side of the country, hunting for some mysterious box that his grandfather left him. Well, no more. Nothing inside that box could possibly be more important than the opportunity to make it as the youngest partner at his firm. So he's going home, and that's that. But that's before he discovers his flight has been cancelled.

When these two strangers meet at the airport, they make a split-second decision to search for the box together. Maybe with both of them on the hunt, Lydia can have her adventure and Blake can find the box. And maybe, if they’re lucky, they’ll even find some romance.

Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver

Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough.

For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do.

Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

Immersed in Love by Jennifer Griffith

Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever.

But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest.

Until… Erik.

Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

Note:  I am in the process of reading this book right now.  My week had a few unexpected complications and I haven't finished it. I will have it done within the next couple of days and post my review!  I will say that so far, it's good and interesting! :)

By the time she reached her teens, she'd accumulated notebooks full of poems, which led to short stories and finally novels. Young adult dark fantasy, paranormal romance, and mythology are among her favorite genres.

A former classical dancer and chef, she grew up in sultry Florida where she still resides with her family.

It was actually Shane who came to me first, and I loved his story: Two older brothers who’d met their wives through this witness protection thing – I loved the expectations that came along with it, and knew I needed to write his story.
I also loved the setting on the ranch. The horses and hard labor, the group meals and gatherings, the camaraderie and the way Shane's family adopts everyone who works there or marries into the family.
I loved the times when Cassie and Shane went off on walks, rides, or on a picnic. Just the simple things they did to develop their friendship.

"My Own Mr. Darcy" by Karey White ~ Blog Tour + giveaway

My Own Tour

My Own Mr. DarcyMy Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Austen themed romance

Book Description: After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough. Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

My thoughts: Since Elizabeth was sixteen she has fantasized about finding a Mr. Darcy to love and marry. Many boys were passed over and not given a second or third date because they didn't live up to the standard she had set.

In a desperate moment her roommate challenges her to go out with one guy ten times before she gives up on him. She has to at least pretend that she is interested and having a good time, even if she isn't.

Chad becomes the lucky guy to fulfill her challenge. The main problem is that Chad is a wonderful man. He is kind, compassionate, funny, and someone she enjoys spending her time with. She begins to have feelings for him. Then her internal picture of the perfect man walks into the bank where she works.  No matter how wonderful Chad is, he comes in second to a dream.

Matthew is tall and aloof. He is wealthy and has expensive tastes. In looks he is everything that she envisioned Mr. Darcy to be.

I enjoyed reading this book. Elizabeth is a character who is genuinely confused and has high expectations. She could be anyone that you know who has been entrapped by falling in love with a fantasy. There is a question that arises , is a fantasy really want you  want?  Can a fictional character ever live up to realistic expectations?

I obviously have an opinion of who is the better man. In my head throughout the book, I wanted her to open her eyes so she could see the situation as I saw it. It is entertaining to watch events play out see her struggle to figure out what she really wants. I needed to know if she let go of her childish fantasy and fell for who was best for her.

If you love Austen themed literature, you should like this book. It has many moments that are right in line with the theme. It is a clean book with an interesting story.

Blog Tour ~ "Escape from Eden" by Elisa Nader (Character interview & giveaway)

Follow the Tour!

Since the age of ten, Mia has lived under the iron fist of the fundamentalist preacher who lured her mother away to join his fanatical family of followers. In Edenton, a supposed “Garden of Eden” deep in the South American jungle, everyone follows the Reverend’s strict but arbitrary rules—even the mandate of whom they can marry. Now sixteen, Mia dreams of slipping away from the armed guards who keep the faithful in, and the curious out. When the rebellious and sexy Gabriel, a new boy, arrives with his family, Mia sees a chance to escape.

But the scandalous secrets the two discover beyond the compound’s façade are more shocking than anything they ever imagined. While Gabriel has his own terrible secrets, he and Mia bond together, more than friends and freedom fighters. But is there time to think of each other as they race to stop the Reverend’s paranoid plan to free his flock from the corrupt world? Can two teenagers crush a criminal mastermind? And who will die in the fight to save the ones they love from a madman who’s only concerned about his own secrets?

Read a Q & A with Gabriel
*********************
What do you love the most?

Can I say myself?

You can answer however you like.
Yeah, I know. I just can’t think of anything else right now. And I don’t want to sound like a total douche. I’m not talking to my goddamn parents, so I sure as hell won’t say them. Let me see, what do I love…

Why aren’t you talking to your parents?

Do you see where I’m living now? Edenton. They think it’s Heaven on Earth but it’s my own personal hell. First, there is nothing to do. I mean nothing. It’s like house arrest except you’re not even in a nice house with video games and vodka. You’re in the middle of the freaking rainforest in South America, with 200 brainwashed crazy people who do whatever this equally crazy Reverend says. What is wrong with these people?

All of them are like that? Brainwashed?

Not all. There’s this one girl. Mia. She seems different.

Why?

She doesn’t have that glassy, passive look in her eye like the rest of them. She talks back to me, answers my questions. Gives me a hard time when she needs to -- and she needs to. She’s the only other person here so far that seems alive. Except for maybe Grizz the security guard. The punch he threw that connected with my eye is a sign that he’s effing alive.
Why did he punch you?

I’m not as cooperative as the folks here in Edenton would like me to be.

And why aren’t you?

I can’t stay here, with these people, in this place. It’s not natural. These people are… odd. They do as their told like five-year-olds. First chance I get, I’m getting the hell out of here, going back to New York where everyone is crazy but at least they’re honest about it. And she may not know it yet, but Mia is going with me.

Are you sure she wants to escape with you?

Mia wants to escape. WIth me, though? I don’t know. I’m not always her favorite person. I think I get on her nerves sometimes. But once she realizes I’m the only other like-minded person in Edenton, she’ll come with me.

Why is it so important that she comes with you?

She doesn’t deserve this. No one does, but especially her. And maybe… Maybe I don’t want to be alone.

About the author: Hi. I’m Elisa. I like cheese and reading and TV show marathons. Writing is scary, but not as scary as, say, Civil War amputations. I’m an Aquarius. Uh… let’s see… I’m not very good at writing my own biography. Or autobiography. I guess this is reading more like a slightly incoherent personal ad.
