Q&A with the characters from "Ever Near" by Melissa MacVicar ~ Blog tour

Love is ever near. But trouble is never far.
Nantucket Island is haunted, but only sixteen-year-old Jade Irving knows it. Ignoring the disturbing spirits isn’t an option, because one dwells in the enormous historic home she shares with her newly blended family. Jade is finding it more and more difficult to explain away Lacey’s ghostly, anguished tantrums, especially with Charlie, her gorgeous, almost step-brother, living right across the hall.
When a power-hungry ghost hunter tracks down Jade and blackmails her, Jade’s secret teeters on the edge of exposure, and her entire future hangs in the balance. If anyone finds out Jade can talk to ghosts, her life will be forever changed.
Can she save herself, free Lacey, and hang on to her tenuous connection with Charlie? Or will everything she ever wanted slip through her fingers?

I thought it would be fun to get to know the characters from the book.  Here is what they have to say!

Jade
1.Tell us about your family.
My family? Ugh, it’s complicated. My dad and my mom got married because Mom got pregnant with me. They went to Northeastern University together in Boston. Luckily, my mom was able to finish nursing school and dad finished his degree in hotel and restaurant management. Then they moved to Nantucket because my dad got a job here at a resort and nurses are needed everywhere.
When I was 12, my parents got divorced. This was entirely my mom’s fault because she said she didn’t love my dad anymore. My dad was so bummed, he moved to Colorado to get away from her. And now my mom is getting married to Mike Dowler who’s really rich and I’m going to have two stepbrothers. So yeah, you can see how this is complicated.

2. What group do you hang out with at school?
I’m a drama/music girl along with my best friend Ally. She’s more the drama though and I’m more the music. I play clarinet, piano, and bass guitar and I sing soprano in our music group called The Accidentals and the Naturals at Nantucket High School.

3. Do you play any sports?
Let’s just say that sports and I don’t get along. Everyone thinks I should be great at sports because I’m half black and I’m tall but I hate anything that requires me to run. Seriously, I am always making up excuses to get out of gym class. Yuck.

4. If you won a huge lottery, what is the first thing you'd buy?
I would buy myself a house with no ghosts in it and I would make my Dad move back to Nantucket and live in it with me. That would be totally awesome!

Charlie
1. Tell us about your family.
Wow, that’s kind of personal right of the bat but okay. I am 17 years old and I have an older brother, Brendan. We live with our dad because our mom died. She had breast cancer. Now my dad is getting remarried to a lady named Carrie O’Neil. He’s totally gaga over her which is kind of weird. She’s nice, though, so I guess it’s okay. Her daughter Jade is the problem, if you can call being smoking hot and funny and smart a problem. Something is wrong with her, though, because she has these really bad nightmares. I want to help but I know it would be best for me to stay away. I can’t be with her with way I want now that we’re going to be sort of related, but staying away is going to be hard considering she’s all I can think about anymore.

2. What group do you hang out with at school?
I’m a jock but I’m not a jerk. I’m not one of those guys who thinks he’s the king of the school because he can shoot a ball through a hoop. I hate those guys and how they treat girls like they’re trash. Not cool at all.
I do well in my classes too so I’m not a dumb jock. I got my smarts from both my mom and dad but Dad says I’m mostly like my mom. I like when he says this because I feel like she’s still sort of here with us in some way because of me.

3. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you’d buy?

A mind reading machine so I could figure out what Jade is thinking. Sometimes, I think maybe she likes me too because I catch her staring at me and then she gets all shy about it. I love when she laughs at my jokes. She kind of tilts her head to the side and her lips look really pretty. Damn! I have to stop thinking about her like that. Seriously, living with her is going to be really hard. I don’t know how I’m going to do it without losing my mind.
