Book Review ~ "Grim" a YA Anthology

GrimGrim by Several Author's
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley
Genre: Grim Fairy Tale Retellings

Book DescriptionInspired by classic fairy tales, but with a dark and sinister twist, Grim contains short stories from some of the best voices in young adult literature today.

My thoughtsGrim is an anthology of several of the Grim stories. Some I was familiar with, some were new to me. It was interesting to figure out which story the author was putting a new spin on.

The stories vary in length and style. There were some that I really liked: The Raven Princess, Beast/Beast, The Brothers Piglett. There were others that I didn't like at all. I won't name them, some turned my stomach. The stories really do have a dark side to them.  That is keeping with the spirit of the original stories.  The Grimm Brother's fairy tales were not like the Disney recreations.

Here are a listing of the many author's involved in this project.  As you can tell from the list, there are many different writing style's involved. Some of them had amazing writing, and others were good, not terrific.  It's hard to really get into each story and break them down.

Ellen Hopkins
Amanda Hocking
Julie Kagawa
Claudia Gray
Rachel Hawkins
Kimberly Derting

I wouldn't recommend this to a younger YA reader. There is violence, language, and sexual situations.
