Now, she’s back in Fairfield with the intention of operating a bed and breakfast from her guardian's Victorian home. When threatening notes indicate someone isn’t happy with her return, Deborah suspects her student’s death was no accident. The man she turns to is the one least likely to help.

Horse breeder Milo Jordan has long harbored anger toward the woman he blames for his younger sister's death. Too many questions have gone unanswered, but now Deborah appears to hold the key to the truth. Can he put aside his anger, and his growing attraction, and work with her to solve the puzzle of the deadly event?

Chapter One, Part 3

Understanding glimmered in his dark eyes. “Okay, I get it. You’re afraid to go off with a stranger, right?

Don’t blame you. Can’t be too careful these days. But, let me introduce myself, and then we won’t be strangers

anymore. I’m Milo Jordan.” He extended his hand.

Milo Jordan. The strong, masculine name suited him. “I’m Deborah,” she offered, as she shook his hand.

“Pleased to meet you. So, how about it?” He nodded toward his farm. “You going to let me do my good

deed for the day?”

Still, she hesitated. The warning note, the car breaking down, the sudden appearance of a handsome man

to help her. Coincidence? Or part of a plan engineered by whoever wanted to torment her?

Yet, Milo’s open and friendly face made her doubt he could be involved in any plot. Maybe the note and

the car breakdown were connected, but surely, this man had nothing to do with either. “I wouldn’t want to keep

you from your good deeds,” she said in a teasing tone.

“All ri-i-ght. Do you want to ride Black Magic?” He gestured to his horse. “Or would you rather walk?”

Deborah glanced at the horse. “I don’t mind walking.”

“Me, neither.”

She locked her car, and he untied Black Magic, and then they started off down the road in the direction

of his farm.

“You said you used to live in Fairfield.” Milo matched her steps as they walked along. “Are you back

for good now?”

“I hope so. I’m turning an old house into a bed-and-breakfast.”

“Sounds like a lot of work.”

“It is, but the remodeling is fun, too.”

“Fun.” He tossed back his head and laughed. “That’s what I told myself when I was remodeling my

house. When I bought the place a few years ago, I knew it needed a lot of work. But I had the time, and so I

decided to do most of it myself.”

They talked some more about house renovating, and soon turned onto a narrow lane that led through a

grove of maple trees to Milo’s farm.

When she reached the house, Deborah stopped and gazed at the two-story home. The white clapboard

siding and shake roof sparkled in the sunlight.  On the porch, pots of red geraniums, white wicker furniture, and

a swing hanging from the ceiling provided homey touches. She turned to Milo. “This is charming. You did a

superb job with your remodeling.”

He met her gaze with a grin. “Thanks. I’m happy with the result—and glad it’s done.”

Milo led Deborah around the house to the back yard where flowers spilled from a wire-fenced garden

and several ducks squawked a greeting from a pond rimmed with white-painted stones. A peaked-roof stable

stood nearby, and next to that, a pen filled with bales of hay.

He pointed to the house’s back door. “Go on in while I take care of Black Magic. My housekeeper is

most likely in the kitchen. Her name is Katie, and she’ll keep you company until I come in.”

“All right. But where will I find a phone?”

“No need for you to call. I’ll phone Johnson’s Auto Repair from the stable. Johnny’s a friend of mine.”

“But you’ve already done so much—”

“Glad to help.” He waved a hand. “I’ll join you in a few minutes.”
