Book Review ~ "Short-Straw Bride" by Karen Witemeyer

Short-Straw BrideShort-Straw Bride by Karen Witemeyer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars'
Source: I purchased this one!
Genre: Historical/Christian Romance

Book Description: No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a lethal plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a twelve-year-old debt compels her to take the risk. Fourteen years of constant vigilance hardens a man. Yet when Travis Archer confronts a female trespasser with the same vivid blue eyes as the courageous young girl he once aided, he can't bring himself to send her away. And when an act of sacrifice leaves her injured and her reputation in shreds, gratitude and guilt send him riding to her rescue once again. Four brothers. Four straws. One bride. Despite the fact that Travis is no longer the gallant youth Meredith once dreamed about, she determines to stand by his side against the enemy that threatens them both. But will love ever be hers? Or will Travis always see her merely as a short-straw bride?

My thoughts: Meredeth Hayes as a girl finds herself on Archer land while being bullied and teased. She has an unfortunate accident and is rescued by Travis Archer. The oldest son and protector of the land and his brother's. Meredith learns an important truth, she holds it to her heart, Travis is a good guy. He is not mean. He only wants to take care of his brother's.

Years pass, and Meredith finds herself once again on Archer property. This time it is to warn Travis and his brothers of a plot to burn them off of their land. She becomes the victim of another accident, and is forced to recover in a house full of bachelor's. Now her reputation is compromised and one of the brother's must marry her.

They draw straws and she believes that Travis has drawn the short straw and marries her reluctantly. Travis wants to court her and earn her affections before they become true marriage partners. Both are making decisions based on misconceptions.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is a historical romance, set in Texas in the late 1800's. There is also a strong belief in God on the part of both Travis and Meredith. It is not based on any religion, just has a Christian element.

Travis and Meredith are such great characters. The presence of his brother's and their relationship is a great asset to the story.  This is a clean romance.

I read this for my July book for the Just For Fun Reading Challenge.
