Time GangstersTime Gangsters by Berin L. Stephens

Age recommendation: Middle Grade
Release Date: Februay 8, 2012 / Cedar Fort

Description from Goodreads: When Billy discovers a hidden cache of ancient coins, it isn't long before a gang of thugs swipes them right from under Billy. Plotting to use the magical properties of the coins to seize power in the past, these power-hungry gangsters will do anything to reach their goal. Their future threatened, Billy and Danny must race through time to steal back the coins---before history is changed forever!

My thoughts: Billy and Danny find themselves the unwanted objects of attention from gangsters that lived in the 1920's. One night Billy is visited by a man with a Tommy gun and Danny has someone in her room demanding coins. The thing they have in common is they are dressed and have speech patterns from the past.

These events lead to an adventure. Billy and Danny try to keep the magical Egyptian "coins" from the gangsters seeking to gain control of the United States. They are trying to keep the past intact and not have their existence wiped out from time.

Billy and Danny (Danielle) are cousins and next door neighbors.  They have a rocky relationship. I enjoyed the play of words and antics they throw back and forth.  They are more like siblings in the way the relate to one another.  They have a friend who is thrown in their adventures with them, his name is Wheezy.  They meed some interesting people in the 1920's.  The gangsters add an element of suspense and at times provide a bit of comedy.

This is a fun book for middle grade readers. It is perfect for it's target audience. I think that both boys and girls will find this book fun to read. It is engaging and full of imagination.
