Review of the Goddess Test

The Goddess Test (Goddess Test #1)The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book in one day. I could not put it down. I was amazed at how Aimee Carter was able to mesh modern day and Greek Mythology into the pages of a fantastic book.

Kate has been caring for her terminally ill mother for the past four years. Her mother has cancer and has held on far longer than Doctors thought she would. As to her mother's dying wish, they move to Eden. This is her mother's home town and where she wanted to come to die.

Kate is not a big fan of small town Eden. It is nothing like her beloved NYC. But she has sacrificed everything for her mother. This is one more thing to sacrifice. She doesn't have close friends, has never dated, and she doesn't have a social life. She lives to take care of her mother.

She enters the small high school and tries not to make friends. Of course, she is the new girl and everyone is a little curious about her. She crosses paths with the beautiful and popular Ava and her life changes forever.

This begins the testing of Kate. She is obviously being tested to become a Goddess. (I think the title is a giveaway, don't you?) The tests are surprising, not all of them were what I was expecting. I was expecting them to be a bit more obvious.

There is someone who doesn't want Kate to pass, doesn't want her to become an immortal. I thought that Aimee did a great job at hiding that one. I honestly had no idea until it was revealed. She does throw some false hints in there that completely threw me off. Kate is not the first girl to be tested.  The rest have failed or been killed.

The love story between Kate and Henry was well written. I really liked that they didn't immediately fall into each others arms. What heroine in a story isn't going to fall for the incredibly handsome, emotionally scarred male lead? Kate is the typical insecure young girl. She doesn't feel pretty enough, smart enough, etc.  She undergoes a lot of emotional growth in the book and becomes a more secure young woman by the end.

There were some parts that were predictable, some that weren't. The cast of characters really surprised me. You will have to read the story to find out what I mean. I highly recommend this book. The only caution that I have is there were some sexual situations. They were not explicit.

I am very excited that there will be another book after this one.  The title listed in the back of the book is Goddess Interrupted.  I will be reading it.

My thanks to Harlequin Teen and Netgalley.  The copy that I read was an eBook downloaded from Netgalley.
