A few hours later, the room was lit with hundreds of tiny candles, a direct result of Beau’s training. Winifred had conjured up the candles so Beau would have somewhere to put the flames.
“Here, I’ve found it.” Stella motioned for Ezzie to look at the page she had just read.
Ezzie read through it quickly. “This looks promising.” She passed the book to her grandmother.
Winifred looked over the spell for a moment. “This looks like exactly what we need to help Charlie. Good find, Stella.”
Stella beamed at her. “I’m good at research.”
“Beau, would you like to help us do this spell?” Winifred called over to him.
He looked up from the candles he was hunched over and smiled. “What do you need me to do?”
“We will form a circle with Charlie in the center, and all of us will chant the spell. Once it is complete, we should be able to pull the memories to the surface.”
Ezzie was excited. After months of nothing, it was nice to be getting closer to the answer finally. The question would be what to do with the information once Charlie could give it.
“Charlie? Are you here?” Ezzie called out.
A moment later, Charlie appeared, looking happy. “This house is amazing. There are so many new rooms for me to explore. And did you know there are other ghosts here?” Her words came out in a rush of excitement.
“I have always thought of this house as sort of a ghost hotel.” Ezzie chuckled. “I think we may have found a way to help you remember. Are you willing to let us try?”
Apprehension flickered across Charlie’s ghostly features. “I’m scared. What if I don’t remember for a reason?”
Ezzie wished she could hug Charlie. “I know it’s scary, but we have to try. This could tell us what we need to know. It could help you move on.”
Charlie flickered for a moment. “Ok, I’ll do it. What do you need me to do?”
Winifred had cleared the table of all the spell books except the one they would be using. Beau and Ezzie held hands on one side of the table. Stella and Grady stood behind them watching.
“Charlie, my dear, if you would float in the center of the table.” Winifred held her hand out in invitation.
Charlie hovered just above the table’s surface. The three joined hands and began chanting the spell. Wind ripped through the room, whipping everyone’s hair around. Ezzie clutched Beau’s hand tighter.
A red fog began to rise from the floor, engulfing the table and engulfing Charlie. The fog swirled around Charlie, covering every inch of her. A soft crying could be heard through the rush of the wind surrounding them.
As quickly as it began, the wind left. The fog remained. Thick bands of it twined around Charlie’s body, curling around her in long loops.
Ezzie let go of her grandmother’s hand and stepped away from the table. She began to speak, but Winifred raised a finger to stop her. The fog was just beginning to lift from Charlie, falling from her like leaves from a tree.
Charlie looked up, sadness painted on her face. “I remember...I remember my mom and dad, and my little sister. How terrible for them to never know what happened to me.”

Jessica Gibson is a recovering bookaholic, she’s down from four books a week to a more reasonable one. It was that love of words and creativity that made her dream about writing her first book. That dream was hidden for years, always put on the back burner, filed away in the “someday” section, until her husband Matt gave her the kick in the pants she needed to actually get off her butt and write. Jessica and Matt live in Southern California and have a serious addiction to reality tv shows like Pawn Stars and American Restoration. They have one son and hope to add to the family in the near future.
