Review of "Blood Wounds"

Blood WoundsBlood Wounds by Susan Beth Pfeffer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Souce: received as part of an ARC tour through  I Read Banned Books
Genre: Contemporary YA
Content Warning: There is content that it not suitable for a younger YA audience.  The main character has a psychological illness that leads to disturbing behavior.

Description from Goodreads: Willa is lucky: She has a loving blended family that gets along. Not all families are so fortunate. But when a bloody crime takes place hundreds of miles away, it has an explosive effect on Willa’s peaceful life. The estranged father she hardly remembers has murdered his new wife and children, and is headed east toward Willa and her mother.
Under police protection, Willa discovers that her mother has harbored secrets that are threatening to boil over. Has everything Willa believed about herself been a lie? As Willa sets out to untangle the mysteries of her past, she keeps her own secret—one that has the potential to tear her family apart.

My thoughts: I liked this book but it was disturbing on many levels.

Willa is a teen growing up in a blended family. Her family is wonderful and on the surface, it seems ideal. She has a loving mother, a loving step-father, and two step-sisters who she has a good relationship with.

Everything changes when she returns a phone call to her mother's friend. Her biological father is on the run with one of his daughters. His wife and two of his daughters are found dead in their home. This begins a psychological journey for Willa. She has to come to come to terms with her father's actions, mourn the sisters that she never met, and deal with her hidden secret.Bit of a spoiler the next couple of sentences.  That's why it's in small print.  Read at your own risk.   **** She cuts herself to escape when she is stressed. The use of a knife is prominent in this book.  How her father uses it and how Willa uses it.  It is part of what she learns to understand and to heal. ****

This is a good book, just be prepared for an emotional journey.

  2. That's why it's small. Only look if you are concerned with content for teens. Or if you have an adversion to certain forms of mental illness. :)

  3. I thought it was a zombie book. It sounds too deep and dark. Woah.
