REVIEW - "Angelfire"

Angelfire (Angelfire, #1)Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

Description from GoodReads.

As Ellie turns seventeen she is suddenly thrown into a world of monsters. She can see monsters, they can kill her, and she kills them.

Just before her seventeenth birthday, Ellie's economics teacher is violently mutilated and killed. She starts to notice a young man who watches her and thinks that there is something familiar about him. He shows up at her birthday party, along with a monster that wants to kill her, and her world is drastically altered. His name is Will by the way.

I loved the idea behind this book. Archangels, reapers, fallen angels & immortals are all fabulous in my book. I love to read about them. Ellie's discovery about her self and purpose on this Earth is interesting. Will's devotion to her makes your heart beat a little faster.

I was a little disturbed by Will bowing to her every wish. He is her guardian, has been with her for several of her lives, but it would have been nice if he showed a little more of his personality.  He is also has a talent of being elusive.  So elusive at times that I wanted to yell at him to just give her a straight answer.  I also had a problem with the amount of underage drinking and sexual innuendo. Other than that I loved the book. It is fast paced and has a strong female protagonist.

Coutney Moulten did a great job of creating her own version of the aftermath of the war in heaven. She brought the war to Earth where there is still fighting going on for the souls of mankind.   She is leading us to a war on Earth of epic proportions, eventually taking us to the brink of Armageddon.  I look forward to the next installment of this series.  I am definitely  awaiting the rest of the story.

I found this book to be entertaining and a pleasure to read.  I would recommend this book for older/ more mature teens and adults due to content listed above.

I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins via Netgalley.  Thank you for making an ARC available and accepting my request to read i!
