Dead Running by Cami Checketts blog Tour ~ Excerpt/review/giveaway

Dead RunningDead Running by Cami Checketts
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book description: Cassidy Christensen is running.
Running from the mercenaries who killed her parents.
Running from a scheming redhead intent on making her life miserable.
Running from painful memories that sabotage her dreams of happiness.
With two very tempting men competing for her attention, she hopes she’ll finally have someone to run to, but can she trust either of them? When secrets from her past threaten her family, Cassidy decides to stop running and fight for her future.

My thoughts: Cassie is facing her fears and conquering her stagnant life by running.

The book begins as Cassie and her sister-in-law are running a 5K. Her participation and finishing the race are a feat for her. She has a tendency to quit things that she starts. After the race she wins a prize in the drawing, she won an entry into a marathon. WooHoo??? The best part is there is an attractive man who has agreed to train with others competing in the race.

There were a few other complications during and after the race. The creepy muscle man who tripped her and seems to be following her and the dead body she found in the bushes.

The book follows Cassie through her journey to train for the marathon. The bad guys are worse than she thought, they want to use her to flush out her "dead" father. There are also two attractive men who want to be with her.

Cassie was my favorite part of the book. Throughout everything she has a sardonic humor that is refreshing. I really enjoyed getting to know her. I did have a favorite with the two men. Both are hiding something and it's hard for her to sift through and determine who she wants to be with.

This was a fun suspense/romance book. I couldn't wait to start on the novella that comes after.

Dying to RunDying to Run by Cami Checketts
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review

Book Description:  Cassidy Christensen wants to run.
Captured by the traffickers who killed her mother, her only hope is Dr. Tattoo, a man she loves but nobody trusts. When she finally gets a chance to run, someone else she cares about is taken. Running might be her only chance at survival, but she won’t allow another family member to be killed in her place.

This must-read sequel to Dead Running will have you laughing, biting your nails, and hoping for more

My thoughts:  This novella picks up where Dying to Run left off.

Cassie has successfully completed a marathon. She has one man now instead of two.  She has made goals for her future.

Unfortunately, the bad guys are still out there. They kidnap her and start another unwilling adventure.

I couldn't wait to dig into this novella immediately after I finished Dying to Run. It was fun to connect with Cassie and Dr Tattoo. (I love her nicknames for the characters around her, it made it easier for me to keep track of them.)

The ending leaves her with some decisions and she has evaluate her thoughts of life and what is important.

Cami Checketts has left things open for another book. I'm hoping that she will continue to write about Cassie, her friends, and family.

********************
I reached the bottom step and peeked around the wall. My dad stood near the fireplace with a mixture of shock and revulsion on his sunburned face.
Just inside the front door, a man peeked out from the shadow of a hooded sweatshirt. He yanked out a wicked-looking blade. I covered my mouth to stifle the scream. My stomach knotted. My legs felt like ice. I didn’t know if I could move, let alone help.
The knife sailed through the air. My father darted to the side. The blade jabbed into his upper arm. Dad yelped. The pain in his face lodged in my own gut. He grabbed at his arm and yanked the knife out, spraying the wall with blood. My dad’s blood. Help. I had to do something.
The hooded figure closed the distance and wrenched the weapon from dad’s fingers, lifting it above his head.
“No!” I leapt from my hiding spot, grabbed a heavy picture frame off the end table, and smacked the man with it.
“Cassidy!” Dad inhaled quickly, hazel eyes widening.
The attacker knocked the picture frame out of my hands and pointed the bloody knife my direction. Dark eyes swept over the skin not covered by my t-shirt and cut-off sweats. I squirmed, his look scaring me as much as his knife. I backed up a step, eyes focused on the blade.
My dad planted himself between me and the man.
The man’s white teeth flashed against leathery skin. “She’s beautiful, Doc.” His tongue darted across his lower lip. “The dark hair and pretty brown eyes. Looks just like her mom.”
Dad held up his uninjured arm and shoved me behind him, his breath coming in ragged gulps. “Leave her out of this, Panetti.”
Panetti cocked his head to the side. “I’m supposed to kill you, but I could bring her in alive for some extra compensation. How old are you, sweetheart?”
I glared at him over my dad’s shoulder. “Twenty-one and going nowhere with you. Get out of my house before I call the police.” It was a lame threat since I was visibly shaking and had no clue where my phone was.
The man threw back his head and laughed. “I like her, a bit of attitude. Ramirez and I will both enjoy her.”
I swallowed the sickening taste of his threat. Sweat trickled down my spine. I clung to my injured dad, who was currently no match for this psycho. How could I protect either of us?
“You’ll never touch her.” Dad pushed me toward the kitchen doorway. “I can’t believe you would betray the children for Ramirez.”
“Not for Ramirez. I betrayed the children for lots and lots of money.” Panetti revealed his perfect teeth again.
Dad looked back at me. “Run,” he whispered.

Elemental Explosions by Kailin Gow (Review/BlogTour/Giveaway)

Elemental Explosions (The Alchemists Academy, #2)Elemental Explosions by Kailin Gow
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Tween to YA fantasy

Book Description: A new student has entered The Alchemists Academy, and he brings with him an explosive power that threatens the Academy and the legend of Merlin. Wirt thought he was the only bad boy at the Academy, but he was wrong. Not only is Roland Black worse than Wirt, but a new teacher had replaced one of their beloved teachers, and she has more planned for Wirt and his friends than just lesson plans. Alana, his crush has grown prettier, and now he is rivals for her attention with not only his best friend Spencer, but newcomer Roland, as well. On top of that, it is their second year, and the year where all the students must pass a test to move on to the Elite Class at the Academy. The Elite Class is the only class in the third year at the Academy, and the students who fail will be sent home, others will face something even deadlier.

My thoughts:  This is the second book in the Alchemist Academy series. Wirt is a student at the Alchemist Academy and has adjusted to his newfound magical skills.

His roommate changes this year. He is no longer with his friend Spencer, instead he is STUCK with Roland. The nemesis of Spencer. They don't hit it off well and it leads to contention and plot development.

I preferred the second book to the first. There was more action and the flow of the story moved at a better pace. I was caught up in the story this time and waiting to see what would happen to Wirt and his friends next.

I am looking forward to the third book. It will be fun to continue on this journey and see who prevails in "The Quantum Games."  I tried to find it on Amazon, but it's not available yet.  Guess I'll just have to wait. :)

This book is great for the tween on up.

Review"For What It's Worth" by Karey White

For What It's Worth by Karey White

Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source: Netgalley

Book Description: Abby’s dream of owning her own cake shop is finally coming true, but she’s still not sure what to charge for her cakes. Deciding to let her customers determine her cakes’ worth quickly turns Abby into a real celebrity. But her newfound fame could end up costing her everything. This delectable romance is sure to keep you guessing to the very last page

Colleen's Thoughts: Such a lovely book in so many ways!  Karey White's ability to describe the cakes, hotels, rooms, or shops, and the beautiful Seattle landscape is exceptionally vivid.  I wished there had been a picture to go along with each of the cakes Abby made.  Each recipe at the beginning of the chapters made me want to rush into the kitchen and try it out.  Delicious!  As in so many romances, both fictional and real, Abby and Dane's relationship is fraught with a heart wrenching lack of communication.  The good news is, I finished the book feeling enriched by the exquisite beauty of not only the descriptive language, but the beauty of the male/female relationship.  The character development is poignant - a gentle reminder that each of us needs to take a hard look at our own lives and realign ourselves with what is most important.

Here is the incomplete version of the books I narrowed it down to.

Each of the pictures above have been linked to their goodreads page.  That way you could find out more information about each of them.  It looks like I enjoyed romance this year!  :)

Kris Kringle's Magic by Diane Stringham Tolley ~ Review

Kris Kringle's MagicKris Kringle's Magic by Diane Stringam Tolley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: I purchase a copy.
Genre: Christmas fiction

Book Description:  In a world where elves are only slaves, one boy is determined to make things right. With the elves' help, Kris decides to begin with the children. But can a pile of gifts on Christmas Eve really change anything? This enchanting story is sure to captivate kids of all ages. An instant holiday classic you'll want to read again and again!

My thoughts:  If you are looking for a Christmas story that stays true to the spirit of Christmas and unique, this may be a book you would want to read.

The book begins as Mrs. Clause is reminiscing of her meeting Kris and their courtship. It is from her perspective that we catch a glace at the compassion and love that he has for his fellow beings.

In the world that Diane Stringham Tolley created, Elves are a subservient species. The humans treat and use them as slaves. They are considered inferior and as such lacking the feelings that humans have. Kris knows this to be incorrect and wherever he goes he tries to educate the human population on the wonderful people that the Elves are.

I couldn't help but cheer Kris on in his efforts and come to love and appreciate the Elven community. This story resonates because we have seen this pattern in human history far too many times.

Throughout their mistreatment, the Elves remained a kind and compassionate people. They remained happy and true to themselves and community.

This book is a quick read. It is only 168 pages. I cuddled up after opening presents this morning in a warm blanket and read the book. I am very glad that I did.

I read this book as my December selection for the Just For Fun Reading Challenge 2012..

I didn't make it reading one book a month just for fun.  I missed August, September, and October.  I signed up for the 2013 challenge and I hope next year to complete my goal (or get a little closer to it).

 It's $5.99 on amazon kindle.

Merry Christmas!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!  I hope your holiday is filled with love and laughter.  May you make  many good memories  this year.

V is for Virgin author Kelly Oram talks about writing. (Blog Tour/Giveaway)

V is for Virgin by Kelly Oram

Genre: Contemporary YA
Source: Received to review
Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book Description: When Val Jensen gets dumped for her decision to stay a virgin until marriage, the nasty breakup goes viral on YouTube, making her the latest internet sensation.

After days of ridicule from her peers, Val starts a school-wide campaign to rally support for her cause. She meant to make a statement, but she never dreamed the entire nation would get caught up in the controversy.

As if becoming nationally recognized as “Virgin Val” isn’t enough, Val’s already hectic life starts to spin wildly out of control when bad boy Kyle Hamilton, lead singer for the hit rock band Tralse, decides to take her abstinence as a personal challenge.

How can a girl stay true to herself when this year’s Sexiest Man Alive is doing everything in his power to win her over?

My thoughts:  Val is a diamond in the rough.  She made the decision years ago that she would remain a virgin until she married.  This was prompted by the letter from her birth mother.  Her birth mother had her at age 16 and was unsure of who her father was.  She gave up her baby girl to give her a better life.  Val was determined that she wouldn't make the same mistake.

The book begins while Val is on a date with her boyfriend.  They are alone at his home and he believes that it will lead to something more.  When she declines, he promptly dumps her and does his best to ruin her reputation.  In a moment of anger she lets loose in the school cafeteria, proclaiming her virginity and adds a few insults in for good measure.  Her scene goes viral and she is caught up in a vortex of events.

Her decision is challenged on many levels.  There is the ridicule of her classmates.  She is introduced a local rock hero and he takes decides to make it his personal goal to obliterate her goal.  She soon becomes national news and becomes a spokesperson for teens struggling with this issue.

This book deals with a very sensitive subject. I found it to be a very interesting theme.  I would love to give  Kelly Oram a hand for the way she handled a controversial subject.  I love the idea of writing about a group of teens who decide to abstain until marriage.  There is so much pressure on teens to capitulate that I find it refreshing to have a book about the power there is in standing up for the right to choose,  to not get into a sexual relationship that they may not be ready for.

The book is about sex.  For that reason I would recommend it to an older teen reader, or to any teen who is struggling with this issue.  I would not suggest this to a youth who is not mature enough for the message.

A note about the title from Kelly :  For those who might wonder about content based on the title -
From Kelly: The book has a great overall message and promotes good strong moral values. For a book all about sex, there's not anything even close to a sex scene in it, but because of the nature of the topic there is a lot of innuendo/sexual humor and some name calling.

********************

Some people are born to write.

I am one of those people. This doesn’t mean I’ve always been good at it. It just means I’ve always done it. I have always been a writer, for as long as I can remember. I just didn’t always know that’s what I was. My parents have stories that I wrote from as far back as kindergarten. By sixth grade I was winning school-wide essay contests, and by the age of fifteen I’d completed my first novel.

I was a very imaginative kid—daydreamed a lot. I also suffered from a bit of insomnia. I remember lying awake in my bed for hours and hours every night as a kid because my brain just didn’t know how to turn itself off. (It still doesn’t. I never sleep.) Growing up I had a lot of time to entertain myself and so I used to make up stories about things I wanted to do, places I wanted to go and people I wanted to meet.

These stories played out in my imagination like a movie. I’d think about something one night, fall asleep, and then pick up where I left off the next night. Eventually somewhere in my middle school years I got frustrated because I realized I couldn’t always remember everything. I’d think of something good and not be able to remember what it was the next night. I started jotting down notes in my journal late at night, then moved to writing out scenes in spiral notebooks. Before I knew it I had over three hundred pages of a start-to-finish story. So what if it happened to be about my best friend and me going off on a crazy road trip where of course we met our teenage obsession the Backstreet Boys… It was still a novel.

Back then I wrote whatever popped into my head. It was just a hobby—a desperately needed creative release. I wrote stories about my friends, or celebrities I wanted to meet, and then eventually I started writing episodes of my favorite tv shows. I was writing fan fiction I just didn’t know it. I never knew other people did this kind of thing. I didn’t know there was a term for it, and entire websites dedicated to it, or awards given out for it. It was my deep dark secret.

In school I hated English and writing classes. I hated reading, and thought I was going to grow up to be a pastry chef. Then I somehow ended up as a voice performance major in college. I was all over the place, but being a published author was never a blip on my radar.

I didn’t begin to take writing seriously until I was 22. I quit my job to become a stay-home mom when my son was born. We were broke and I didn’t have much to do so I started writing stories again. Then I found the world of fanfiction and joined several forums. It took me a while to get brave enough to share my work with others.

After a few years I’d had enough of writing fan fiction. I wanted to create my own characters. (Something about needing complete freedom and control…) I made the jump into original fiction with my book Being Jamie Baker, and have never looked back.

"Stones to Ashes" by Kailin Gow ~ Blog Tour ~ Review/Giveway

Stones to Ashes (The Alchemists Academy, #1)Stones to Ashes by Kailin Gow
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre:  Tween to YA fantasy

Book Description:  "What do you learn here...at the Academy?" Wirt asks. "Magic? The responsibility to use your powers responsibly?" "Uh...something like that," his roommate Spencer said. "More like how to rule worlds." Wirt, is used to being shuffled from foster home to foster home, adopting a devil-may-care attitude toward the world along the way. Now he s in a school he can't escape, learning to develop his latent magical abilities, for what use, he doesn't know...to save his world or to destroy it..

My thoughts:  Wirt is a challenging young man. He has a disconnect between his brain and his mouth, there is not filter. He says things that get him in trouble. He is an orphan and moves from foster home to foster home.

Our introduction to Wirt happens as he is being chased by bullies. His mouth worked faster than his brain once again. He is about to be pummelled when he wishes he were somewhere else. His wish was granted, sort of, he finds himself on the doorstep of Alchemist Academy.

His sudden appearance has him and the faculty confused. How did he get there? Did someone send him? The consensus is that it would take more magical talent then they presume he has for him to get there on his own.

This book is written for a younger YA reader or tween. It is simple to follow and straightforward. This is a book will appeal to readers who love the legends of Camelot. (I'm in that group.) It also is a book that I think that older readers of "Dragon Slayers' Academy" by Late McMullan will enjoy this book as well.

I loved the fact that the main protagonist is a boy!  I have three sons and I love to find books that would appeal to them.  It gets frustrating sometimes to peruse the teen section of the bookstore looking for a good fantasy for my sons, most are geared to girls.  Thanks Kailin for writing a book that my boys may want to read. :)

It's a clean read with a little bit of kissing.
