Blog Tour ~ "North for Christmas" by Christina Dymock

CoverNorth for Christmas by Christina Dymock
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from publisher to review
Genre: Christmas Romance

Book Description:  Have you ever known exactly what you wanted for Christmas? As a child, you may have written a letter to Santa, made a wish upon a star, or locked your dream away in your heart afraid that it might not come true if you so much as whispered it out loud. Even as adults, Christmas wishes carry a magic that can't be explained. In North for ChristmasRuby Jeavon certainly has her heart set on an engagement. It's the first step in creating the family she's always wanted. But things go slightly off course and instead of flying to Italy with her boyfriend, Ruby heads out of town to work as an elf in Nashville. Even though she's far away from her dream, she's about to discover the magic of a Nashville Christmas through the eyes of North Foxwell, her fellow elf and a Christmas expert. Even though North struggles with his own Christmas ghosts, Ruby manages to bring new light to his life. Can Ruby let go of her dream to find what her heart truly desires? Only time--at the North Pole--will tell.

My thoughts: This book brings out the true meaning of Christmas on different levels.

Ruby wants to go to Italy for the holidays. She thinks that a proposal from her boyfriend of three years is imminent and going to Italy with his family will be the perfect time and place.

Her perfect Italy plan is put in jeopardy when she doesn't have all of the funds she needs. Her mother refuses to help her out and instead sends her to check out the charitable contributions the company helps each Christmas.

She is surprised to find her mother's accountant, North, helping out the Christmas charity. They get to dress as elves and help Santa fulfill the wishes of Children and families in need. To see Christmas from this viewpoint helps her understand one of the meanings of Christmas, charity and selflessness.

The Christian aspect of Christmas is also put forth in the book. The love of the Savior and His sacrifice make a difference in the life of North. While he is full of love of other's, he needs to make some adjustments in his life to fully embrace the Season.

I love that two imperfect people who have a lot to give can learn and grow in this book. There are many great life lessons pointed out in the story.

This book is well written and very cute. It is perfect for the holiday season. It's also clean.

You can pick up your copy of North for Christmas at your local book store, or from one of these links.

Imogen, warrior of the Kirkellan tribes, marries the King of their long-time enemy the Ruskalder. Her obedience is the price of her people’s safety, but she can be pushed only so far:
Hrovald slammed his fist down on the high table. “You will do as I command!”
Imogen stared the King down. Her fear for Dorenna and for Elspeth had drained her ability to fear anything else. “Think again, husband,” she said softly. “You have no right to force me. I am your wife because I choose to be. I follow your rules because I choose to do so. You may think of me as a Ruskalder wife, but I swore oath to a Kirkellan husband, and no Kirkellan husband has the right to insist I not follow my conscience when someone’s life is at stake. So, husband, I intend to return to that room and continue caring for Elspeth North, and you should think very carefully about how far you’re willing to go to stop me.”
Hrovald glared furiously at her. His fingers curled into a fist, and briefly Imogen remembered the treaty, and the Kirkellan, and Ruskalder warriors slaughtering her people. If she didn’t back down, what might he decide to do? Enough, she thought. I’m not going to be a hostage anymore. If he breaks the treaty, it’s on his head, and we Kirkellan will just have to endure. As we always do. She straightened her spine. She wasn’t some frail Ruskalder woman. She was a warrior of the Kirkellan, and she would show this man no fear.

Alison Quinn, Countess of Waxwold, is content with her bookish life—until she’s summoned to be a lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Tremontane’s mother for six months. Even the prospect of access to the Royal Library doesn’t seem enough to make up for her sacrifice, but Alison is prepared to do her service to the Crown. What she’s not prepared for is Prince Anthony North, Queen Zara’s playboy brother, who’s accustomed to getting what he wants—including the Countess of Waxwold.

When the fallout from an unfortunate public encounter throws the two of them together, Alison has no interest in becoming the Prince’s next conquest. But as the weeks pass, Alison discovers there’s more to Anthony than she—or he—realized, and their dislike becomes friendship, and then something more—until disaster drives Alison away, swearing never to return.

Then Alison is summoned by the Queen again, this time to serve as Royal Librarian. A threat to Tremontane’s government, with her treasured Library at stake, draws Alison into the conflict…and into contact with Anthony once more. Can they work together to save the Royal Library and Tremontane? And can she open her heart to love again?

Book Review ~ "The Avery Shaw Experiment" by Kelly Oram

The Avery Shaw ExperimentThe Avery Shaw Experiment by Kelly Oram
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received from the author to review
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance

Book Description:  When Avery Shaw’s heart is shattered by her life-long best friend, she chooses to deal with it the only way she knows how—scientifically.

The state science fair is coming up and Avery decides to use her broken heart as the topic of her experiment. She’s going to find the cure. By forcing herself to experience the seven stages of grief through a series of social tests, she believes she will be able to get over Aiden Kennedy and make herself ready to love again. But she can’t do this experiment alone, and her partner (ex partner!) is the one who broke her heart.

Avery finds the solution to her troubles in the form of Aiden’s older brother Grayson. The gorgeous womanizer is about to be kicked off the school basketball team for failing physics. He’s in need of a good tutor and some serious extra credit. But when Avery recruits the lovable Grayson to be her “objective outside observer,” she gets a whole lot more than she bargained for, because Grayson has a theory of his own: Avery doesn’t need to grieve. She needs to live. And if there’s one thing Grayson Kennedy is good at, it’s living life to the fullest.

My thoughts: I loved the dialogue in this book. It's full of sass and banter! The main characters are spunky and adorable. I couldn't help but like Avery and Grayson. They have an easy relationship (they grew up together) that leads to some interesting topics and situations.

Avery is dealing with heartbreak. The boy she has grown up with and cherished her entire life (Grayson's brother) has just informed her that he needs space. He doesn't want to hang out and has relegated her to the "friends zone". She is lost and broken. Grayson sees what a jerk his brother is being and swoops in to pick up the pieces of her heart.

Neither were prepared for the chemistry between them. Grayson is a womanizer. He is a senior in High School and has a reputation for playing the field and not sticking around long with any particular girl. Avery is a science geek. She is smart and uses her knowledge figure out he world around her. Her broken heart gives her an idea for the Science Fair, Grayson becomes her reluctant partner (for extra credit) and they strive to figure out how to scientifically mend a broken heart.

This is a cute book. I didn't enjoy the fact that it contains a lot of body parts humor. There is quite a bit of sexual innuendo. I would suggest that this book is for older YA readers. If it wasn't for the age of the characters I would suggest this book to be a NA book.

Book Review ~ "All Fall Down" by Julie Coulter Bellon

All Fall Down (Hostage Negotiation Team #1)All Fall Down by Julie Coulter Bellon
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Free Download
Genre: Action/Adventure/Romance

Book Description:  Hostage negotiator Claire Michaels’ never thought she'd be involved in an international crisis. Can she overcome her scars of the past to stop a new al-Qaeda threat?

Navy SEAL Rafe Kelly is on leave to recover from a knee injury he suffered during his tour in Afghanistan and he doesn't expect to be fighting terrorists on his home turf. When he's taken hostage, he knows he has to fight or die.

My thoughts: There are many good things in this book. It is fast paced and action packed. There is travel, hostage negotiations, spies, military men, suspense, romance, etc.

Claire meets Rafe in a hostage negotiation situation. Rafe's friend has a bomb attached to him and they are struggling to find a way to disarm the bomb and have a happy ending to the situation. This leads to Claire and Rafe teaming up to discover who is behind the bomb. A new hostage situation takes them from the US to Afghanistan.

The book has some great action and suspense moments. The attraction is insta-love as Claire and Rafe find themselves in some intense moments during a short period of time.

This book could have been edited better. (I read the Smashwords edition.) I had a problem with some obvious typos.  The book contains violence and kissing.

This book can be purchased for $2.99

Girls Who Choose God: Stories of Strong Women from the Book of Mormon

Girls Who Choose God: Stories of Brave Women from the Book of Mormon by McArthur Krishna
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from the publisher to review
Genre: LDS Religious Picture Book

Book Description:  Shining light on strong women from the Book of Mormon, this groundbreaking book shares well-known stories alongside others that may be less familiar. Come to better know and love Sariah, the heroic daughters from the land Zeniff, Nephi's wife, the maidservant spy, and other women from the Book of Mormon who chose God with all their might. These faith-filled women defended their families, protected their husbands, and risked their lives for others—providing powerful role models for us all.

With stunning illustrations, ten compelling narratives, and thought-provoking family discussion questions, this volume will give you a new perspective on the Book of Mormon. Reading and reflecting on these brave women's stories, girls and boys will learn that they too can be strong and choose God.

My thoughts: This picture book is beautifully done. The illustrations are interesting and depict the stories.

The part of the book that I appreciated the most is that it made me take a look at stories in the Book of Mormon differently than I had before. The story of the daughters from the Land of Zeniff was a good example of this. The father's asked their daughters to plead for mercy from their attackers. I never considered this an act of courage. It was pointed out that the daughters wanted to save their families. They listened to their fathers instead of running away. The question is then asked "When have you placed the needs of your family above your own?"

I love that the book points out women with values from the scriptures and tells their stories. Each story illustrates the choices presented and how the women acted with strength and courage. At the end of the story a question is asked about times when the children have made similar decisions. I love how this brings the scriptures closer to the reader and makes them more relevant to the readers life.

This would be a great nighttime story or quiet book to take to Sacrament Meeting.

Book Review ~ "In Good Company" by Jen Turano

In Good Company by Jen Turano
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from Bethany House to Review
Genre: Historical Fiction

Book Description:  After growing up as an orphan, Millie Longfellow is determined to become the best nanny the East Coast has ever seen. Unfortunately, her playfulness and enthusiasm aren't always well received and she finds herself dismissed from yet another position.

Everett Mulberry has quite unexpectedly become guardian to three children that scare off every nanny he hires. About to depart for Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer, he’s desperate for competent childcare.

At wit’s end with both Millie and Everett, the employment agency gives them one last chance–with each other. As Millie falls in love with her mischievous charges, Everett focuses on achieving the coveted societal status of the upper echelons. But as he investigates the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the children’s parents, will it take the loss of those he loves to learn whose company he truly wants for the rest of his life?

My thoughts: This book is incredibly cute. It only took me a few minutes to love Millie Longfellow's character. She is spunky and a magnet for trouble. She has a natural curiosity about life and the world around her that rubs off on the children in her care. She is a nanny who loves children. She guides them in unconventional ways for the time period. Unfortunately, this gets her into trouble. She tries to use new words, sometimes she gets it right. I enjoyed the many times she misused words.

Millie has a problem, she is attracted to her employer. His station is far above hers and that creates a problem. It is not sociably acceptable for a man with means to have a relationship with a woman who is an orphan and works for a living. Everett also comes with a relationship. He has been courting a socialite for an extended period of time.

It appears throughout the story that the book may not have a happy ending. There are many factors that work against the couple (good people, bad people, and misinformed people).

The children were some of my favorite characters. Who doesn't love a little boy struggling through and identity crisis and wears frocks? Millie relates to the children who are orphans. They have been uprooted from their home and life to live with Everett, an emotionally distant guardian. Millie's goal is to give the children love and acceptance.

The banter in this book is delightful. It's nice to have a woman with a backbone as the main character. Millie doesn't let anyone get the better of her. Many references are made to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the banter uses the classic as a model.

The book has references to religion, but it is not the major theme of the book. The characters have a belief in God and live their lives accordingly. The book has some kissing and a minimal amount of violence.

Book Review ~ "A Timeless Romance Anthology: All Hallow's Eve"

A Timeless Romance Anthology: All Hallow's Eve
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Halloween

Book Description:  Six Award-Winning Authors have contributed new stories to A Timeless Romance Anthology: All Hallows’ Eve Collection. Three historical novellas and three contemporary novellas, all with romance, thrills, and chills.

In Sarah M. Eden’s mysterious novella OF GHOSTS AND GARDENS, if Enid Pryce has one downfall, it’s that she talks to the ghost in her garden, which doesn’t make her too popular among society’s elite. In fact, she returns to her home in Wales after a Season in Bath with not one offer of marriage. Deeming herself a failure at the nearly-spinster age of nineteen, she is pleasantly surprised when an English gentleman shows up in her garden, apparently intent on finding out more about the ghost. Burke Kennard, grandson of an English marquess, quickly becomes utterly charmed by the young Welsh woman, but the ghost in the garden is more likely to push them apart than pull them together.

In Annette Lyon’s enthralling story IT’S YOU, when Charlie and Anna both see the ghost of Nanny Mae, they think they’re losing their minds. Anna tries to find out more about the ghost and uncovers a decades’ old family secret. One that separated two people in love. Now, the ghost of Nanny Mae must set her wrongs to right. As Charlie and Anna explore the past, and the truth of what happened, they discover that the mistakes of the past might lead to love of the future.

In SOPHIA’S CURSE, a suspenseful novella by Heather B. Moore, Joan grows up in an abbey in France, believing that she is an orphan. A chance encounter with the foreboding owner of a neighboring estate, alters everything she’s understood about her parents. She discovers she’s an integral part of changing a decades-old curse, and that her life, as well as the handsome and intriguing Simon Rousseau’s life, are both in danger unless she makes an enormous sacrifice that will change the course of her dreams.

In Lisa Mangum’s haunting story THE SIRENS’ SONG, we meet recently widowed Oliver, the lead physician on a luxury cruise liner traveling to Greece. He hopes that the change of scenery will help ease his grief over his deceased wife, Cate. After falling overboard, though, he is captured by a siren and taken to a mystical island. Through the sirens' song, Oliver is able to relive his memories of Cate—both the good and the bad—as long as he gives away his memories of her. But can he sacrifice his best memory in exchange for one last chance to say good-bye?

In Jordan McCollum’s thrilling novella THE MAN OF HER DREAMS, homicide detective Alexandra Steen dreams about real murders before they happen, seeing the crime through the eyes of the killers. But the dreams never contain enough clues to save the victim before it's too late. Then one dream ends before a murder occurs—in a place she knows. She finds herself racing against time to prevent the deadly act, only to discover that the intended victim is a man she thought she’d never see again. Seven years might have passed since her breakup with Nick, but the years haven’t changed her feelings for him. Now, she must convince Nick that her dreams are real and find a way to prevent his death.

In Elana Johnson’s chilling story THE GHOST OF MILLHOUSE MANSION, Naomi knows her crush on Colt Jennings is unreasonable. When he invites her to his reclusive mansion to restore an old wooden rocking horse, Naomi can’t resist accepting the job. The more time Naomi spends touring his home, the more interested she becomes in Colt. Until she sees a man in the library who vanishes into thin air. She thinks she’s losing her mind until Colt tells her about the ghosts he’s been seeing for years.

My thoughts: You can never go wrong when you pick up "A Timeless Romance Anthology". I have enjoyed every one that I have read. Half of the novella's are historical fiction and the other half contemporary.

The stories deal with ghosts, curses, sirens, murder, etc. While all have a haunting/paranormal theme, none are grisly or will give you nightmares. This anthology was the perfect Halloween book for me. I really enjoyed that they had a great resolution with sweet romance.

The books all have Hallow's Eve in common but are very different in execution. I am always amazed that the anthologies always have such variety. It illustrates the talent of the author's who contribute to the books.

The stories are clean with a little bit of kissing.

Book Spotlight ~ "Autumn Masque" a Timeless Romance Collection

I am looking forward to reading this collection!  All of the Timeless Romance Anthologies have been wonderful and worth the time to read.

Here are the stories I am looking forward to:   Join three bestselling Regency romance authors, Josi S. Kilpack, Donna Hatch, and Nancy Allen, for three new Regency romance novellas in AUTUMN MASQUERADE.

A MERRY DANCE by Josi S. Kilpack. When Lila overhears her uncle talking about a man coming to look for property in the county, she doesn’t think twice, until her uncle says he hopes Lila will find enough interest to marry the man. How can she marry someone named Mortimer Luthford, not to mention that his advanced age of thirty-three, and especially since she’s already in love with her absent cousin Neville? But when Mortimer arrives, Lila has to try every trick known to women to act not interested in the rather fascinating man, which proves a very difficult façade to maintain.

UNMASKING THE DUKE by Donna Hatch. The last thing Hannah Palmer wants to do is flirt with men in a crowded ballroom, but when her sister throws a Masquerade Ball, Hannah can’t say no to the invitation and takes comfort behind a mask. She dances with a charming masked man, matching him wit for wit. When the glorious evening culminates in a kiss, and the two remove their masks, Hannah is horrified to discover the man she’s been flirting with all night is her most despised neighbor, the Duke of Suttenberg. No matter how charming the duke was at the ball, and how wonderful the kiss, he is the last man she’d ever accept.

WHAT’S IN A NAME by Nancy Campbell Allen. Penelope Timely has a terrible secret. She’s been writing letters to the Duke of Wilmington, pretending to be her ever-proper twin sister, Persephone. Now, the duke has written that he’ll be coming for the Autumn Masquerade Ball and Festival. Penelope will have to continue the charade while the duke is in town in order to protect her sister. The Duke of Wilmington isn’t fooled for a moment, but instead of confessing that he knows about the deception, he finds himself utterly charmed by Penelope and jumps into the game of deception to see how far the twin sisters will take it.
