A PRINCE caught in a deadly game
A WORLD choked by secrets
Abducted during a devastating ambush, Clare is now the captive of ruthless mercenaries. Dragged through the wilderness while grieving heart-rending loss, she must maintain the illusion that she is the princess. Because if she lets the mask slip, even for a moment, the Mortisians will have no reason to keep her alive.
After arresting traitors close to the crown, Desfan fights to rebuild his court, knowing that the imminent arrival of the Devendran princess will further upset the precarious balance in Mortise. But Desfan’s world is rocked when he discovers a rumor that rewrites the most devastating event in his life. He will stop at nothing to find the truth–no matter where it leads.
As Grayson struggles to find his footing in Mortise, he discovers new friends and enemies. His life is further complicated by the tenuous alliance with his spymaster brother. With secrets deepening around him, Grayson must decide where his loyalties truly lie. Through it all, his heart remains in Ryden with Mia. Unfortunately, his love for her is no secret, and the Black Hand is a coveted weapon . . .
Eyrinthia holds its breath as allies and enemies collide. Secrets. Lies. Betrayals. Nothing will be the same.
My thoughts:
Holy Fates! This is such a good series. I started to list the fantastic characters, but there are so many. Some of them I love to hate and others completely took me by surprise.
I love the fantasy world that Heather Frost has created. I am hooked with the Fates of Eyrinthia series. I don't know how Heather Frost keeps track of all of her characters, kingdom's, settings, etc. She is so good with the details.
The lives of many are entwined in this complex world. There is so much going on between the characters. The distance between them is narrowing. The struggle for power is becoming more intense. I am really hoping that the bad guys will be punished in the end.
This book leaves you with so much up in the air. The next book can't come out soon enough. I want to read it now while everything is fresh on my mind.
This story makes me want to read them all again. It's been awhile since I started the series and some of the details are a little hazy. This series is all about the details. I want to read again how the characters got to the point in this book. I want to revisit some of the political intrigue, traitorous activities, and romance.
If you are looking for a great fantasy series, I highly recommend this one.

Serene kept her eyes on the table, though she was aware of a game of cards turning heated in the corner. There were two different accents—Mortisian and Rydenic—and accusations of cheating littered the air.
Not interested in becoming part of a brawl, Serene stood. Others must have had the same idea, because the crowd was thick as she made her way toward the door.
She was nearly there when a strangled yell pierced the air, followed by the fleshy thud of a hard punch. Serene shot a look over her shoulder and saw the gaming table flip—and then chaos ensued. Chairs were thrown, bottles shattered, and bodies flew. The patrons around Serene turned into a frenzied crush, and elbows stabbed into Serene from all sides. She grunted at each blow, but steeled herself against the pain as she shouldered for the door.
A heavy body slammed into her from behind and she hit the floor hard, elbows and knees banging against the wooden floor. She couldn’t breathe because of the crushing weight planted on top of her. She lay there, stunned, surrounded by the explosive sounds of the fight. The smack of knuckles striking flesh, shouts and curses from two different kingdoms, and the crack of tables and chairs being broken.
The man flattening her kicked off suddenly, sending an elbow into the back of her head. Her ears rang and her vision blurred as her chin hit the floor. She could feel blood welling to fill the cut.
That would not be easy to explain tomorrow.
Gritting her teeth, Serene scrambled to her feet—then ducked hurriedly to avoid a hurled chair. She hugged the wall and darted for the door. Her only goal was to make it out of the tavern without being further pummeled. When needed, she fell back on the lessons her bodyguards had taught her over the years—all ways to end a potential fight quickly. A kick between the legs. A quick jab to the throat.
“Soldiers coming!” someone yelled.
Fates. The last thing she needed was to be arrested for brawling in Duvan’s slums. Cardon would never let her hear the end of it. Dirk would be utterly disappointed. And Desfan and his court would probably struggle between laughing at the absurdity of it all, or simply voiding the marriage alliance.
I’m sorry, she could almost hear Desfan say. There can only be one reckless royal in Mortise, and I’ve already taken on that mantle.
She sniggered, but instantly winced.
Perhaps that elbow to the head had done more damage than she’d thought. There was nothing funny about this.
She rushed for the door, finally pushing through the crowd. Once on the street, she bolted—but her run was short-lived. She smacked into a hard chest after only a few leaping steps.
Hands gripped her arms, steadying her, and Cardon’s scar jumped in his cheek as he glared. “Of all the fates-blasted idiotic things you’ve done, this is legendary!”
“Soldiers,” she rasped.
Cardon scowled, but he released one of her arms. “Come on,” he snapped.
