Stones to Ashes by Kailin Gow
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Tween to YA fantasy
Book Description: "What do you learn here...at the Academy?" Wirt asks. "Magic? The responsibility to use your powers responsibly?" "Uh...something like that," his roommate Spencer said. "More like how to rule worlds." Wirt, is used to being shuffled from foster home to foster home, adopting a devil-may-care attitude toward the world along the way. Now he s in a school he can't escape, learning to develop his latent magical abilities, for what use, he doesn't know...to save his world or to destroy it..
My thoughts: Wirt is a challenging young man. He has a disconnect between his brain and his mouth, there is not filter. He says things that get him in trouble. He is an orphan and moves from foster home to foster home.
Our introduction to Wirt happens as he is being chased by bullies. His mouth worked faster than his brain once again. He is about to be pummelled when he wishes he were somewhere else. His wish was granted, sort of, he finds himself on the doorstep of Alchemist Academy.
His sudden appearance has him and the faculty confused. How did he get there? Did someone send him? The consensus is that it would take more magical talent then they presume he has for him to get there on his own.
This book is written for a younger YA reader or tween. It is simple to follow and straightforward. This is a book will appeal to readers who love the legends of Camelot. (I'm in that group.) It also is a book that I think that older readers of "Dragon Slayers' Academy" by Late McMullan will enjoy this book as well.
I loved the fact that the main protagonist is a boy! I have three sons and I love to find books that would appeal to them. It gets frustrating sometimes to peruse the teen section of the bookstore looking for a good fantasy for my sons, most are geared to girls. Thanks Kailin for writing a book that my boys may want to read. :)
It's a clean read with a little bit of kissing.
