The Sun, The Moon, and Maybe the Trains (Book Tour)

Book Description: What would it take to convince you that the woods you just left is a hundred and forty-four years distant from the one you entered?

Ten years have passed since the Civil War broke up John Bartley’s family. Living with his aunt and uncle in the tiny village of Greendale, Vermont, isn’t filled with excitement for a seventeen-year-old.

Until John walks into the woods one day and stumbles into 2009…

Fortunately, he chances upon the outspoken Tess McKinnon. To earn her trust, he must first convince her that he is neither a lunatic nor a liar. The proof he needs is buried at the end of a mountain road, where the ruins of Greendale lie just beneath a layer of dead leaves and moss.

What became of his home? Why is there no record of its existence?

Question: What is the inspiration behind your writing?

Disappointment was my inspiration. I knew from early on what I’d end up being when I grew up. I had my mind pretty much set by the age of seven. The earliest memory I have of declaring my ambition dates back to the summer of 1961. Every summer, my parents made the trip from our home in Selma, Indiana, to my grandparents’ farm in Oxford, Michigan, and then abandoned me and my siblings there for a five or six week stretch. This was fine with us, as we all worshiped our grandparents.
I recall the drive north dragging on for half an eternity—damn near the whole day. This was before the interstate highway was completed. It seemed to take hours just to get through Detroit and Pontiac, both of which were in their prime at the time—dense with cars, endless miles of traffic lights, and road construction. I’d be interested in the sights for a while, but inevitably they’d grow tiresome. The summer of 1961—I was busting with excitement as our car finally came up over the hill before my grandparents’ farm. I remember greeting my grandma with a hug, then running down to the barn where my grandpa was feeding the cows. He asked me about school (my first year), then asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told him, “An artister.” He grinned, then laughed. I recall being puzzled by his reaction, wondering why my ambition to be an artister was so funny. But I didn’t let my bewilderment stop me.
I grew up with a talent for art and a disconnect for verbal expression. All through school I struggled with language, particularly writing. I was a slow reader, terrible at spelling, and had only a vague idea about grammar and sentence structure—I just couldn’t see it, couldn’t get my mind around it. All I cared about was art. I was in my early twenties when I read my first novel. The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart. I remember it taking me forever to get through that book—me with my dictionary close at hand, looking up at least one word per paragraph. I kept at it because I was enthralled by the story. From there I slowly progressed into avid reader.
About two decades later, at the book store, I picked up a sci-fi novel, among the best books I’d ever read. I recall the ending of the story leaving me hoping a sequel would follow. And then, several years later, it did. I was very much in the mood for another great story by this excellent author. I rushed out and bought the book, eagerly dove into its pages, made it a few chapters in, and began to realize how dull and two-dimensional the characters were, and how unnatural the dialogue sounded. I couldn’t finish the book. It annoyed me. I remember thinking I could probably write a better story myself, and I’d never written anything before. This ridiculous idea turned into a challenge, which I found impossible to ignore. I was not inspired by greatness, but I was pushed to write by my own ignorance and arrogance.
Perhaps it wasn’t inspiration that started me writing, but I’m certainly inspired to continue.

Shallow (Going Under Series Book 2) - blog tour

Payton Archer's best friend, Claire, strives to be perfect in every way. Payton doesn't and this is her story.

Nick Hawke likes his car fast and his girls even faster. He blows through females quicker than his muscle car races down the "The Strip" in Collinsville and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Determined to avoid the devastation he has watched his father endure in the aftermath of his mother leaving, he believes there is no room in his life or his heart for a relationship lasting more than one night. He seeks happiness in things that won’t let him down...fast cars, adrenaline and one night stands. To his absolute dismay, all of that changes when he unexpectedly runs into an old friend and is introduced to Payton Archer, the first girl he ever wanted for more than one night. There’s only one catch...she is completely immune to him and his smooth talking ways.

Payton Archer is looking for what Claire has with Jessie, but she has given up on finding it...at least until she leaves for college in the Fall because she is certain that is where she will find the perfect guy to fit into her perfect world. She plans on Summer being nothing but three uneventful months of fun, but it turns out to be anything but ordinary when Payton is introduced to Nick Hawke, one of Jessie’s old Collinsville friends. She is shocked by her immediate and intense attraction for “Hawke” because nothing about him is what Payton is looking for. Sure, he’s hot and sexy but he comes from Collinsville and that is definitely not on her list of prerequisites. Everything about him makes Payton’s heart speed because he is exciting and dangerous, but his fast car and the dangerous chances he takes aren't what scares Payton the most...it’s the way Nick Hawke makes her feel every time he looks at her. Can Payton find that moment of total fearlessness and make the decision to leave the safe, shallow end of love to risk going under completely?

REVIEW = Loves Providence by Jennifer Westall

Love's ProvidenceLove's Providence by Jennifer H. Westall
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received electronic copy for review
Genre: Contemporary YA Christian romance

Book Description:  Collegiate athlete Lily Brennon has always been the piece that doesn’t quite fit in the puzzle, especially in her fragmented family, and no amount of rule-following perfection seems to bring her any closer to the love and acceptance she desperately seeks. If not for Jackson Carter, her childhood best friend and the only boy she’s ever loved, she’s sure she would have run away years ago. But when Jackson loses his father and a future basketball career within months of each other, his faith is so shattered, he shuts out everyone, including Lily.

After months of heartache, Lily begins to piece together a life without Jackson, and while vacationing on a beautiful island off the Georgia coast, she begins a long-distance romance with Alex Walker, a police officer with a quick wit and a cocky grin. He revives her hope in love again, but their intense attraction and his devastating secret test Lily’s values, stretching them until they break. Through her struggles to remain true to her principles, an agonizing choice between Alex and Jackson, and a series of terrifying events that threaten all of them, Lily must endure losing everything she’s been grasping so tightly. Only then will she discover the depth of the love that already surrounds her.

My thoughts:  Lily is the main character in the book. Her story begins as her boyfriend and best friend decides to end the relationship. He is struggling with personal trauma and emotionally withdraws from life.

Heartbroken, she takes a trip with her family to an island for the summer. Her she meets Alex. He is a handsome police officer with an attitude. It doesn't take long for sparks to fly and the relationship to progress father than Lily was prepared for.

Lurking in the background is her feelings for Jackson, the boyfriend. She can't seem to let go, and yet she is ready to move on. It doesn't take long for Jackson to realize he has made a terrible mistake.

The story revolves around Lily and her struggle to figure out what she wants in her life. Her Christian values are strongly shaken by Alex. I could see how he got her to let down her guard a little bit at a time to get what he wanted from her. I could understand his side of the story, it's not that he was a bad person, just had a different set of values.

This is a well thought out book. While morals are compromised, it gives little detail to the events.
I would recommend this book to a more mature YA reader.

The  book is 99 cents on Kindle!

This review should have been attached to the blog tour post yesterday.  I didn't finish the book at that time, but I finished in today while waiting for my husband to be released from the hospital.  He just got home and I am very relieved to be back in my own space.  Thanks to all of your prayers.  It has helped immensely.

There is an ebook giveaway associated with the book.  You can go to my original post for the blog tour and enter on the rafflecopter.  The link is ....  HERE.

Saving Savanna by Sara Fitzgerald (Blog Tour)

Saving SavannaSaving Savanna by Sara Fitzgerald
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received electronic copy for review purposes
Genre:  Seasonal Christian Fiction

Book Description:  Devan can’t help but blame God for his wife’s death, so the last thing he wants to do this holiday season is celebrate. But when his daughter, Savanna, makes a special Christmas wish, their little family will never be the same. Filled with faith and tenderness, this heartwarming story is sure to remind you of the real power behind the magic of Christmas.

My thoughts: This is the first Christmas that Savanna and her dad have had to live through after the death of her mother.

Savanna is five and not fully comprehending that she will not be with her mother again on Earth. Her Christmas wish is to see her mommy again.

Savanna's dad is holding on to his grief. He really doesn't know how to let go of it and give Savanna the Christmas that she needs.

This story is short and touching. It is a reminder about the reason that we celebrate Christmas... Christ and the love that he has for all of us.

When it rains....it pours!

Life is never simple.  Wouldn't it  be nice if it were?  Recently I mentioned in a post that I was looking forward to this week when my kids would pretty much be done with football and soccer to catch up on some much needed reading time.

It would be wonderful it that could just happen.  The world and stars would magically align and I could work on my goals, trial free.  :)

This weekend my husband became very ill.  He had a massive migraine and was thinking he was passing another kidney stones (he passes one every couple of years).  He finally let me take him to the emergency room yesterday where it was determined that he needed his appendix removed.

Yes, it did rupture.  Yes, he is still in the hospital and will be there at least until tomorrow.  NO, I am not getting the time that I wanted to catch up on reading.  If I miss a review this week, I apologize.  I am only answering email that is vitally important.  Many are sitting in my inbox until I have time to sit down and  concentrate.  I'm treading water about ready to drown.  Thanks for your patience with me.   ~Lisa

“Well,” Alex said, looking first at Kara, then at Rachel. “With all the make-up, you look about twenty-one. So I’d have to say you two are about thirteen, maybe fourteen.”
Kara’s mouth dropped open and Rachel gasped. Lily could barely control her laughter.
“What?” Rachel exclaimed. “I am fifteen, almost sixteen!”
“And I am already sixteen!” Kara folded her arms across her chest.
“Whoa! Don’t get your panties in a wad.” Alex threw up his hands in surrender. “I was just giving you a hard time.”
As the girls continued to sulk, he winked at Lily. Something about him sent a shiver down her arms.
“And how about you?” he asked.
She hesitated. She shouldn’t let him bait her into comments she might regret. Arrogant or not, he was an officer of the law, a position she had always been taught to respect.
Rachel finally spoke for her. “She actually is twenty-one.”
Kara lifted a brow, a puzzled look that seemed to ask if she was okay. Lily decided to ignore it and Alex as well.
She turned and looked out over the ocean, wishing she could enjoy it alone. The ocean and sky had melted into one large black expanse, but she could hear the waves tumble into the rocks not far away.
“So, how long have you been police officers?” Kara asked.
“Seven years for me,” Steve answered.
“You’re kidding. You don’t seem that old.”
Steve laughed. “I went into the police academy right out of high school. Been doing this since I was eighteen.”
Lily glanced at Kara and caught the slight nod toward Steve. She knew she was being rude, but what did Kara expect? Flirting with a stranger wasn’t going to fill the hole in her chest. Still, she supposed she should at least be polite.
“That’s pretty young to become a cop,” Lily said. “You didn’t think about going to college?”
“Nah.” He grinned like the thought was absurd. “I never wanted to do anything but be a cop. Dad’s a cop. Mom’s a cop. Just seemed natural.”
He smiled at her again, and the warmth of it reached out to her. It wasn’t much, but it made her smile. Maybe getting to know Steve wasn’t the worst idea in the world.

About the author:  I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and Holly Pond, Alabama, two very different towns that I love for so many reasons. Holly Pond is my soul, the place where I go to remind myself of who I am and where I come from. It's a quiet place that allows me to reset when I've fallen off track.
Birmingham is my heart, the place where I lived out my story. I go there to remember my best friend, my first love, my first job, my first heartbreak.
And then there is Saint Simons Island, the place I go to feel alive, to feel the breeze off the ocean, the salt on my tongue, the excitement of my first (and only) summer fling.
I may reside in the suburbs of Atlanta, creating memories with my sweet boys, but I call several places home.

Review ~ "What Would The Founding Fathers Think" by David Bowman

What Would the Founding Fathers Think: A Young American's Guide to Understanding the Mess Our Country is in and How We Get OutWhat Would the Founding Fathers Think: A Young American's Guide to Understanding the Mess Our Country is in and How We Get Out by David Bowman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Source: Received copy to review from author at LDSBA convention
Genre: Nonfiction/Educational for youth

Book Description: History, politics, government they're not just for grown-ups anymore. Today's teens are about to be handed a collapsing nation and it'll be their job to fix it. Enter David Bowman. With wit, humor, and sound judgment, he skillfully illustrates America's biggest problems and presents an interactive guide to understanding them that's so much fun adults will want to read it too.

My thoughts: Imagine seeing the modern day US government through the eyes of the founding father's. In this book David Bowman imagines what George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison would think about our current situation.

The book does a brilliant job of discussing the role that Government "should" be taking in the life of the American citizen. He illustrates how the Government was organized and how it works best. He then shows how far off track we have gotten as a nation and how inefficient the current role of Government is.

He does all of this in a language that youth will understand. He has fun illustrations and situations that we would see today. This book is really a wake up call. I really appreciate it in the climate that we live in today.

A great and practical resource to learn about the Constitution of the United States of America.

About David Bowman: As a Christian and as a patriot, David Bowman glorifies his Savior and his nation through his fine art, his books, and his motivational speaking.

His "Expressions of Christ" series is unlike any other Fine art depictions of Jesus available. His intimate,
up-close portrayals show Jesus in a variety of "real emotional expressions". Whether it is a tender,
compassionate embrace (Security) or playful laughter at the innocence of children (Innocence), David's
pastel drawings truly capture the indescribable love of our Savior. As one admirer put it, "In your art, I
love that Christ is smiling and laughing. He is so rarely depicted that way. Our home is full of His spirit
thanks to you."

David also writes and illustrates a variety of books for young audiences. Combining his cartooning skills
and his experience teaching at a high school level, David knows how to engage kids, pre-teens, and
teens with books that are both entertaining and enlightening. His best-selling Who's Your Hero series
helps kids want to become modern day examples of heroes from the scriptures. The Great Plan of
Happiness teaches them of God's plan for their lives and Dude, Don't be a Lemuel helps older kids and
teens avoid negative, faith-destroying attitudes.

In the political realm, David's latest work is quickly becoming THE Constitutional/conservative book
for young Americans. In What Would the Founding Fathers Think? A YOUNG American's Guide to
Understanding What Makes Our Nation Great & How we've Strayed, David uses wit, humor, and a
variety of visuals to skillfully teach preteens and teens alike the wisdom of returning to our nation's
founding principles, and in a way that they will actually "get it". Even adults will enjoy the simplicity
of its explanations. As Barbara Stowell, Vice President of Constitution Week USA, puts it: "I've learned
more from this book than all the other government and constitutional course material I've studied."

And David loves to teach! He speaks to youth groups on religious and political topics all over the
country. His fun, engaging style, on a variety of topics, helps motivate them to be all-around better
Christians and patriots. Your kids won't soon forget a David Bowman presentation!

I met David Bowman this summer at the LDSBA (LDS Booksellers Association) convention.  At the time he gave me an autographed copy of this book to review.  I also want to mention that he is an excellent artist.  His pictures of Christ are beautiful and inspiring.  You can find his work at this link!
