Book Review ~ "Kate Unmasked" by Cindy M. Hogan

Kate Unmasked (Code of Silence, #1)Kate Unmasked by Cindy M. Hogan
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: YA Suspense

Book Description:  The mysteries of her past consume her.

Seventeen-year-old Kate has never stopped searching for the secrets of her past - the secrets that began with her missing birth parents. After years of every lead drying up and every hope turning false, Kate finally lucks onto a promising lead.

Determined to find the truth once and for all, Kate travels to the gritty New Jersey shore. But what she finds is worse than she ever could have imagined. She can't hide from who she is, and now she must face the awful consequences of finding the very people she should have been hiding from.

Some secrets should stay dead and buried.

My thoughts: Kate is adopted and has been searching for her biological family. Every avenue leads to a dead end, until she finds a locket hidden in an attic. From that moment the book is a whirlwind of activity taking her on a trail of adventure and danger.

The book was a quick read for me. I found it to be interesting and full of suspense. Kate has people who care for her, but is driven to find her biological family. I can understand the need and want to find out where you came from, but I didn't like how she hid things from her family. Basically, I found Kate to be a very confused teenager.

Her best friend was shallow. Her life revolves around reality TV. Her schedule and friends all take a back seat to the shows she watches. She didn't seem like a friend that could be counted on.

It is revealed why Kate's adoption has been hidden. There are secrets that should not be uncovered.  She puts herself and her family in harms way by her actions.

This book is written for the YA reader. There is some violence and kissing.
