In Julia’s life, timing is everything. Like the time her paranoid father put bars on her window so she wouldn’t sneak out at night—even though she’s never given him a reason not to trust her. Or the time this weird new kid showed up at her school and pretty much every girl in sight instantly and inexplicably fell in love with him. What was up with that?
But as time moves on, things in Julia’s life go from strange to seriously impossible. Now it’s all she can do to keep herself and the life she’s always known from falling apart.
This fast-paced action-adventure story is packed with humor, romance, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the very last page. Get lost in a world of hidden royalty, shifting alliances, and dangerous vendettas, but don’t ever forget: nothing is what it seems.
My thoughts: I must admit, I really like paranormal and fantasy. This book has elements of both genres.
Julia is sixteen and in high school. She has friends and lives a pretty normal life. She lives with her father and has never known her mother. Things run just about as well as you would expect for a girl in her situation.
Things start to become different when a new boy named Caleb comes to her high school. The girls all think that he is something special. Except for Julia, there is something strangely familiar and different about him. She begins to have anger management issues, far more than what you would expect from a teen. Most teens don't start to growl like a large cat when mad. Julia does. She learns that there are many secrets that have been kept from her.
Caleb is part of the new world that she enters into. He is there to see her safely to her new home when she has to run from the life she has known. In her new life she meets Terrance, another very cute boy. There is a little bit of a love life decision, but not too much.
Julia finds that she is part of political maneuvering. She is a pawn piece between two factions of the government. I don't want to say too much about the plot, but Julia has many decisions that need to be made and many people who would like to get their hands on her for their own gain.
I think that Heather Ostler has done a great job at telling a story. This is a fun and interesting book to read. I love it when an author can come up with a different spin on a paranormal myth. In this case it is of Shapeshifters.
I received this book to review as part of the blog tour. The copy that I read came from Netgalley. There isn't content that I would be concerned in letting teens read.
About Heather Ostler: Heather Ostler grew up near the mountains with a rambunctiously entertaining family. She majored in English at Utah Valley University, and soon began composing stories about masquerades, water nymphs, and shapeshifters. She and her husband, Kellen, reside in Highland, Utah with two remarkably pleasant pugs.
