The Dystopian Tour ~ What Tomorrow May Bring ~ YA Dystopian Boxed Set + giveaway!

WHAT TOMORROW MAY BRING, the YA Dystopian boxed set, is a collection of  dark yet hopeful stories from eleven different authors. Each wrote a short essay on dystopian fiction called My Thoughts On Tomorrow, to introduce their novels.

Part 1 featured excerpts from six of those authors.

Here, with Part 2, are excerpts from the remaining five. The full versions can be found at The Hunt For Tomorrow.

Join the mailing list for news on our upcoming dystopian scavenger hunt.

Meet The Dystoptomists: Shining Light on a Dark Future.

CARY CAFFREY, The Girls From Alcyone
I wanted to give my characters a chance to live without the burdens of prejudice, where no one cares about your nationality, your sexuality, or gives a second thought to who you date or who you love. All with no questions asked. Because they have bigger things to worry about. Like survival.
And, goddammit, I wanted the story to be fun!
Setting a story like this in the present day would be impossible. Who would believe it? But, that’s the beauty of science-fiction, and that’s why I love it so much. When we look to the future—in the case of The Girls from Alcyone, three hundred and fifty years into the future—absolutely anything is possible.

DAVID J. NORMOYLE, The Narrowing Path
But even when society as a whole is bleak, the human spirit often provides the strength to break free. In the world of The Narrowing Path, the lower classes work together and help each other, often sacrificing themselves so that others might live. They have to deal with not just the problems of the strictly limited population, but also the brutal regime inflicted on them by the ruling class, but their suffering makes them stronger rather than weaker, makes them love more than they hate.
It’s a dog eat dog world we live in. But it can and will get better.

JOSEPH A. TURKOT, The Rain

But as in all dystopian stories, weakness works ruthlessly upon the characters thrown into such dire hopes, and utopian fantasies are often never what they seem.
I wrote this story as an exploration of the human spirit, and its willingness to find some kind of negative capability within the compromise of two ideals—the utopian and the dystopian—the very reflection of which has more to say about our own society than we might have ever imagined possible.

SHELBI WESCOTT, Virulent: The Release
There is so much to explore about human nature and behavior, and that is what I love the most about dystopian literature. When I wrote VIRULENT, I wanted to start pre-dystopia and show how a dystopian society could develop, and I wanted it to feel like something that could happen tomorrow with no warning. The idea that we don’t know what tomorrow will bring is not a source of anxiety, but excitement when looked at through the lens of fiction. It gives us a blank slate to imagine any multitude of possibilities.

DEBORAH RIX, External Forces
Dystopian stories can seem to be about wildly imaginative yet impossible futures, but they are really a version of what is happening in teenage lives right now.
What if TEOTWAWKI comes not as an apocalyptic bang, but instead we watch it arrive without giving the slightest whimper? Reimagine all of that, and, again, we end up with dystopian fiction, the sort that likes to warn us of the consequences of staying calm and carrying on. If those teenagers out there don’t stop and turn things around for us, this is how the future could turn out.
THE HUNT.
IT COMES.
JULY 18-20.

Saints and Soldiers: The Void (Trailer + giveaway)

Today is the 70th anniversary of D-Day.  I am grateful for the sacrifice of the soldiers of WWII.  They have left a lasting legacy and will not be forgotten.

Looking at the promotional information I have received, I look forward to watching this film.  It looks excellent!

Saints and Soldiers: The Void in theaters August 15th

Germany, May 1945, the twilight of WWII.  On a final mission deep in the Harz mountains a U.S. tank crew discovers a platoon of Germans, including three infamous Panzer tanks, preparing to ambush allied supply trucks.

Before the war, private Jesse Owens, was a product of segregation and racial discrimination. Forced by law to ride in the back of the bus and disenfranchised from the political process. Now, Owens fights the greatest tyrant in history, knowing the tyranny of racism will be waiting for him back home if he can survive the war.

With a deadly game of cat and mouse quickly unfolding, Owens and his predominantly white tank crew find themselves out-gunned and out-manned by the German Panzer tanks.  Several in Owens’ crew are reluctant to put their faith in a black tank driver despite their dire circumstances. As the German tanks bear down on his unit, Owens has to fight for freedom on two fronts. With tension and fear beginning to manifest Owens knows they must put aside their differences to stop the enemy from their deadly plan.  Knowing that a victory over the Nazis means a victory for racial justice, Owens and his men find a way to work together to save hundreds of lives in a desperate battle against the greatest odds they have ever faced.

"As we approach the 70th anniversary of D-Day, we pause to honor those who demonstrated unselfishness and commitment to freedom. The tradition of unselfishness continues today. God Bless those then and now who serve our country."
~ Adam Abel, Producer

"During the original SAINTS AND SOLDIERS film festival run around the world we were honored to meet many WWII Veterans in person. It has been 10 years now. Many of those Veterans have passed. For those WWII vets remaining and all men and women of the armed forces since we salute you. The SAINTS AND SOLDIERS movies are intend to honor you."
~ Ryan Little, Director

"Our reason for making SAINTS AND SOLDIERS: THE VOID was to explore the story of those African American soldiers who fought for freedoms abroad they didn't entirely enjoy at home. We learned from their stories freedom is and was worth the fight...regardless of race."
~ Adam Abel, Producer

Book Blast ~ "Unstoppable" by S.R. Johannes + giveaway!

Unstoppable

After everything that has happened, Grace goes to the Everglades to live with her grandmother, Birdee. Even though she is now home-schooled by her bird-obsessed grandmother, the move gives Grace time to relax. She learns to scuba dive and starts boating with old man Rex, Birdee's casual friend/boyfriend.
One day while out in the marshes of the Everglades, Grace rescues an abused Florida panther, currently on the endangered list. The more she dives into the animal’s horrific condition, the more she ventures into the underground world of the roadside zoos that run rampant in Florida with a total disregard for the law. Eventually, she stumbles upon one large roadside zoo filled with a variety of endangered and illegal animals.
Before she can gather evidence and report her findings to the authorities, she is kidnapped by the ruthless owner and dragged deep into the Everglades for a hunting challenge. Only this time, Grace is the prey.
During a sick game of cat and mouse, Grace is offered one chance at survival. With a one-hour head start and very little supplies, time and skill are now all that stands between the hunter and the hunted.

Blog Tour ~ "The Quantum Breach" by Denver Acey

The Quantum BreachThe Quantum Breach by Denver Acey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Action/Suspense

Book Description: Tanner Zane is a Mormon with a secret criminal past. Nobody suspects that, before his religious conversion, Tanner hacked into thousands of computer networks across the globe. He accumulated millions of dollars from his illegal activities until a sudden, life-changing event caused him to abandon hacking and give his fortune to charity. But Tanner’s guarded past is exposed when he is kidnapped by his mysterious neighbor and forced to hack into an impossible target – Los Alamos National Labs. Inside the government facility is a prototype quantum computer that is powerful enough to crack the digital safeguards of the Internet. When Tanner learns that cyber-terrorists will use the quantum computer to commit massive identify theft and corporate espionage around the world, he deliberately engages in an intellectual battle with his captors to prevent them from obtaining the device.

My thoughts: This book is a wake up call to everyone who uses the Internet or stores information on their phone. Denver Acey takes an intriguing story and integrates scenarios that can happen to anyone.  It's not comforting to know that we have a false sense of security regarding personal information..

Tanner is a hard working man who is headed out for a much needed break. His plan is to take his parents on a trip for his two month sabbatical. He has done some things in his past that he is not proud of, hacking, and has reformed his life. There are people who know too much about him, who plan to use his skills to steal information from a high security institution.

Tanner is amazing. He is able to use his intellect to outwit his captors. The mind games in this book were well written. Tanner is a likable character. In some ways this book was coming full circle for him, his past and his present collide.  I really liked that he was able to receive some closure, and know that he could be forgiven from his family and friends.

The book also takes a look into the minds of the criminals who Tanner worked with.  I think that it added some insight to the international wrangling for information.  It shows how people can be manipulated into acting in ways that are at odds with their conscience.

This book is clean and is great for anyone who loves a suspense book. There is high stakes espionage, a little romance, and some action.

About the Author: Few people understand the terrifying, yet realistic threat of computer hacking like Denver Acey. Denver has spent his entire professional career in the information technology industry where he has witnessed and even thwarted actual cybercrime. From his top-secret job working for the US government to securing computer networks at Fortune 500 companies, Denver is personally familiar with hackers and their unscrupulous activities.
But over the years, Denver has become increasingly frustrated with Hollywood's inaccurate portrayal of cybercrime. Hackers are more intelligent and more sophisticated than simple teenagers, who guzzle down Mountain Dew while playing video games. Cybercrime is a billion-dollar business that encompasses organized crime and foreign governments. For these elite hackers, the fruits of success are iconic trademarks, innovative patents, and government secrets.
Because of his unique background, Denver decided to write a book to dispel hacking myths while highlighting the tenacity of cybercriminals. Utilizing actual computer hacking concepts and scenarios that he has experienced firsthand, Denver illustrates  -- in a simple way for even the non-techie to understand -- how vulnerable we all are to cybercrime.

Blog Tour ~ "Missing Lily" by Annette K. Larsen + giveaway

Missing Lily Tour
Tour Schedule

Missing LilyMissing Lily by Annette K. Larsen
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Source: Electronic copy for review
Genre: YA Romance

Book Description: “You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house. He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night.

Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

My thoughts: This book made me happy. The end.

(Just kidding) I didn't find any reason to not fall in love with this story. The plot is cute, the book has excellent pacing, the characters are very likable, and it is suitable for anyone of any age.

Lylin is a princess who has her own opinions, she thinks and acts quickly and she has empathy for others. She is the seventh daughter and has a close relationship with her sisters.

Returning home from visiting her sister Ella, from Just Ella, she is ambushed by thugs, she escapes by using her whits. She is injured cold, and frightened. She finds her way to a barn, intending to hide when she is discovered by the owner.

This begins a great story. She doesn't know who to trust, so she gives him a false name, Lily. The story begins with distrust, but quickly becomes a clean romance. Lylin learns that Lord Fallon is an honorable man. He is also handsome!

There are some intriguing plot twists that keep the reader turning pages. I didn't find a dull moment in the book. It kept my interest from start to finish. While this book comes after "Just Ella", you do not have to read them in order to stay caught up in the story. They are both wonderful, so I see no reason why you wouldn't want to. :)

Just as I started to relax, the sound of voices made my eyes pop open, and I sat up, forcing my breathing to quiet. The doors at the other end of the stables slid open and someone entered, carrying a lamp and shaking water from their clothes.
“I’m not seein’ things, Lord Fallon. Someone is in here,” a voice whispered. I sat still, unable to move. The lamp shifted, casting two men in ominous shadow.
“I believe you, Giles. That’s why we’re here.” His Lordship sounded not at all concerned, as though he were merely humoring his hired man. He sounded more tired than anything.
“The lamp, Giles.” The light transferred to His Lordship’s hands, illuminating his face and leaving me astonished by his youth. He looked to be in his twenties, and I wondered how such a young gentleman held the title of Lord. “You’re sure it wasn’t an animal of some sort?” he asked as he took his first steps down the long line of stalls. He would find me soon enough, and yet this prospect didn’t terrify me as it had moments ago. Lord Fallon looked not at all frightening. He wore trousers, a loose fitting shirt that hung untucked, and a full-length coat that fell in languid folds from his shoulders. Water dripped from his rumpled hair, sliding down his face and into his well-trimmed facial hair.
“T’weren’t no animal, sir.”
“The horses aren’t agitated. They would be if someone threatening were about.”
When the light fell on me, Lord Fallon’s eyes widened. I tried to push myself to my feet, but he drew a sword that I had not realized was hanging at his side and pointed it at my throat. I fell back against the wall, crouching, my chest aching from the heavy beating of my heart.
“I don’t take kindly to vagrants on my property.” His fatigue had vanished. Now he looked menacing—terrifying.
My voice was barely audible as I forced a reply. “I’m not a vagrant, sir.”
His eyes narrowed in question. “Remove your hood.”
I raised my hand slowly and pushed the fabric back. His eyebrows raised, even more surprised by my appearance than by my voice. The sword lowered. “Giles, take her inside and put her in front of a fire. She’s freezing.” And with that, he walked away and I slumped back to the ground, numb with relief.

AnnetteAuthor Annette K. Larsen I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.
I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

Blog Tour ~ Promotional Post "August Moon" by Tammy Morea + giveaway

Follow the tour!

What do you do when the one who broke your heart, is the only one who can fix it?

There is nothing in this world stronger than the powerful emotion of being in love.  Except, maybe the paralyzing pain of a broken heart.

Moving to a small unfamiliar beach town in the summer before her senior year of high school is really going to suck. Raven, a black haired beauty, from a well- off family was certain about that. Miserable in her circumstance’s, nothing could convince her otherwise, until Raven meets Quinn, a local with a love for surfing and a bad reputation to go with it. Despite the very different worlds they live in, their desire for each other is undeniable. Raven’s fears and misery start to vanish as she and Quinn fall deeper and deeper into each other.

But things change drastically when Raven is unknowingly used as a pawn, in a turn of disastrous events, caused by Quinn’s older brother.

The events that follow could silence Raven’s heart for eternity and completely destroy what’s left of Quinn’s soul.

August Moon is a captivating story of young love.  Bringing two unlikely hearts together.  Only to be shattered by one tortuous decision.  Putting these star-crossed lovers on course for the ultimate challenge of forgiveness.

Parental guidance is strongly suggested for this YA book.  It has content that may be unsuitable for some readers.

Q & A with the Author
********************

Today we are talking with Quinn O’Shea, the Male protagonist of August Moon.

T: Hello Quinn, Thanks for chatting with us today.
Q: Thanks for having me. I just want to warn you I’m kind of a one word answer guy, unless you’re a close friend or family member.

T: Okay, no problem Quinn. How about I ask you one or two personal questions and then we just do some rapid-fire ones, there usually good for one word answer type guys.
Q: Sounds good, one condition though. No questions about Raven, I just can’t go there, right now.

T: I’m sorry to hear that, but I understand. I hear you are a lifeguard in the summers and you are also an exceptional Surfer. Want to tell us a little bit of your history with the ocean and your surf board?
Q: Sure, let’s see I started surfing when I was around seven or eight years old. My Dad taught me and my three brothers. Surfing is sort of a rite of passage when you grow up in Long Beach. Even if you never become any good at it, if you’re a local you tried it at some point. Before that I was on a boogie board, ya know the foam ones that you lay on your stomach and ride the waves in.

T: Do you play any other sports? Maybe Ice Hockey, like your best friend MaryKate. Speaking of MaryKate, what’s it like having a girl for a best friend?
Q: No, I don’t play any other sports.  Okay so first of all I don’t call her MaryKate, she’s just MK to me and having a girl for a best friend is way better than having a guy best friend. Girls are just more…. I don’t know…. Rational. Well MK is anyway.

T: Ready for those rapid-fire Questions?
Q: Go…

T: Books or Movies?
Q: Movies

T: Coke or Pepsi?
Q: Neither, I drink ice tea

T: Vanilla or Chocolate?
Q: Vanilla, but sometimes I like a twist

T: Hawaii or California?
Q: Hawaii, best waves

T: Fast car or Fast Motorcycle
Q: Both

T: Alright Quinn, I won’t torture you with any more Questions. I’m sorry about your situation with Raven. I guess we will have to read your story in August Moon to see how things turn out. Thanks a lot for taking the time to talk with us.
Q: Sure thing, have a good one.

About the Author:  I am a Young Adult Author, My first Novel August Moon will be released in late spring 2014. Besides writing I love to read Romance, YA, ChicLit, Fantasy, Paranormal and a good auto biography never hurt anyone. My other greatest passion is animals, I love them all, but I have a weakness for dogs, I wish I could save every single one that needs saving. I have a dog Tank, he’s my heart and he’s a big… mush, I bite his face all day long and he lets me. I also love mini pigs, one day I will have one. My fiancé Chris doesn’t think so, but what does he know. I think I’m an amateur photographer, but really I just like to take pictures and sometimes they come out really good. I love Riding on the back of Chris’s Harley, it’s my favorite form of transportation. I’m obsessed with the Twilight Saga, those books literally changed my life. Tattoos are sexy, I have seven. I pretty much love anything with a skull on it. My thumb is very green, just ask my air plants. I can cook my ass off, just ask Chris. I enjoy being active in all different ways- hiking, biking, camping, taking Tank for a 3 mile walk, working out or sitting on the couch all day catching up on my DVR recordings. I love to dress up and wear make up and accessories (I have a ring addiction, that I think I might need some counseling for) and heels, but I can get dirty on a camping trip or hang out in my sweats and a tee all day, I will even walk Tank in Pj’s with no make -up on(yep, you heard me, Pj’s, no make up- outside in public) I come from a big crazy Italian family and I wouldn’t have it any other way. And just because I want to give her props, I think Marilyn Monroe is the sexiest, hottest, bad-ass bitch in the history of bitches ( bitches meaning all us girls.)
