Book Spotlight ~ "The Other Side of the Bridge" by Camron Wright

The Other Side of the Bridge
Two coasts. Two strangers.
And a bridge that silently beckons them both.

Katie Connelly has lived in San Francisco all her life. Her late father made his career on the Golden Gate Bridge, and the many stories of how he saved jumpers still haunt her. And now her job assignment is to write about the history of the bridge—a history that includes a secret journal about a promise ring and a love story that may be the answer to her unresolved sorrow.

Meanwhile, Dave Riley, a marketing executive in New York, has sorrows of his own. Grasping at straws after tragedy strikes his family, he decides to follow a daydream that has turned into an obsession: to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge on a motorcycle on the Fourth of July.

Does the bridge somehow mysteriously hold the answers both Katie and Dave are looking for? Or will they find something completely different when they get to the other side?

Ashes on the Moor by Sarah M Eden

Ashes on the MoorAshes on the Moor by Sarah M. Eden
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from publisher to review
Genre: Historical Romance

Book Description:  When Evangeline is sent to live in a small mill town in Northern England as a schoolteacher in 1871, she finds herself struggling to fit in with an unfamiliar culture. Raised with the high-class Victorian values and ideals of a sophisticated upbringing, she is unprepared for the poverty she finds in the gritty factory town of Smeatley, where the locals speak with a hard-to-understand Yorkshire accent and struggle to thrive with few resources or opportunities.

Though she has no training as a teacher, she must prove herself successful before her grandfather will release her substantial inheritance to her and allow her to be reunited with her younger sister, the last remaining member of her family after a fever claimed the lives of her parents and brothers.

Evangeline's sudden change in circumstances is complicated when her aunt—a woman who values class distinctions more than her family relationships—forbids her from acknowledging any connection to her or to her grandfather, Mr. Farr—the man who owns nearly the entire town. For the first time in her life, Evangeline is truly alone.

Heartbroken, she turns to the one person in town who has shown her kindness—an Irish brick mason, Dermot, and his son, Ronan. Despite the difference in their classes and backgrounds, Evangeline and Dermot become friends, due in part to her ability to connect with Ronan, whose behavior requires special attention. The boy is uncomfortable around strangers and rarely even speaks to the other children in town. He often fixates on details other people ignore, and he adheres to specific, self-made rules that give his life order and structure; for example, Dermot's coat must be hung on a specific peg next to the door.

Evangeline attempts to prove herself a worthy teacher and earn the respect of her hard-to-understand students. Determined to find a way to introduce them to "proper English" while still honoring their unique language and culture, she enlists the help of a local family to write down familiar stories in the Yorkshire vernacular. Because of her efforts, the students and their families warm to Evangeline and she continues to look for ways to give the children a chance to become more than factory workers in the local cotton mill.

When the town learns of her upper-class status, Evangeline must work twice as hard to win back their trust--especially Dermot's. In the end, Evangeline and Dermot discover that, even though they come from different social spheres, together they can overcome social prejudices, make a positive difference in the lives of even the humblest people, and enjoy the strength that comes when two hearts find each other.

Ashes on the Moor is the inspiring love story of one Victorian woman's courage to fight against all odds, and the man whose quiet strength gives her the confidence to keep trying.

My thoughts: Evangeline Blake's world is torn from her after the tragic death of her parents and brothers. She is forced to leave her home and accept the "benevolence" of her aunt and grandfather. Not all is as she was lead to believe it would be and her true character is tested as she is forced to deal with less than ideal circumstances.

I loved the growth of Evangeline in this book. She is compassionate, honorable, kind, and trustworthy. Her ultimate goal is to be reunited with her sister. To do that she must prove that she is capable. Fortunately, this lady of refinement meets an unlikely ally in the Irishman Dermot McCormick. He teaches her what she need to know to survive and they forge an alliance that helps them both.

I loved this glimpse into the impoverished life of the British countryside in 1871. The people try to survive everyday. Education has just been introduced for ever child to have access to. The divide between the wealthy and the poor is illustrated in stark contrast. In the middle of the story is a remarkable boy who we would now recognize as being on the autism spectrum. This is a wonderful story of a resilient people.

This is a clean romance!  Sarah Eden is one of my favorite authors to read.  I highly recommend this book and everything else she has written.

Beauty and Her Boss by Jennifer Faye ~ Book Blog Tour + giveaway!

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Beauty and Her Boss
(Once Upon a Fairytale #1)
by Jennifer Faye
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 256 pages
March 1st 2018 by Harlequin Romance

An innocent beauty, a scarred hero...

Could she be the one to open up his heart?

Handsome but guarded former Hollywood star Deacon Santoro prefers the confines of his mansion since an accident left him scarred both inside and out. But he promised to protect sparky beauty Gabrielle Dupre, his new PA. Can Gabrielle convince Deacon that love will give them the fairy-tale ending they deserve?

My thoughts: This book was easy to get into. The characters, the story...I enjoyed it all.

Gabrielle is a selfless individual. She works two jobs to support her father, she takes care of him, until he creates a mess that she has to fix. She becomes the PA to the reclusive actor, Deacon Santoro. This is to keep Deacon from prosecuting her father for trespassing and staging a protest on the actors property, accusing him of being at fault for the car accident that took Gabrielle's aunt's life.

Yes, the situation that gets Gabby into the the home of Deacon is a little complicated. The main thing is that she finds that not everything is clear cut. There are pieces of the story that don't add up. As a librarian, and journalist, Gabby knows that she can get to the bottom of it and find the truth. But she didn't plan on Deacon being a good and kind man.

The book had many of the aspects of Beauty and the Beast. Deacon is scarred, both emotionally and physically. Gabby is a person to look past the outward appearance and see the heart of the person in front of her. I did miss Gaston, I didn't find a character that I could claim as him. The teacups didn't come to life and I missed the candlestick. I guess that there is only so much of the fairy tale that can make it into a contemporary romance. :)

This book has innuendo and fade to black romance scenes.

We Love Small Town Romance ~ Book Blog Tour with a giveaway

Marrying the Wedding Crasher by Melinda Curtis This bachelor’s pretend girlfriend just made a shocking discovery— She’s pregnant! Although they dated for only a month, Harley O’Hannigan just agreed to be Vince Messina’s plus-one at a Harmony Valley wedding. Big mistake, given her deepening feelings for the tall, dark, unavailable bachelor. And what about Vince’s long-buried family history? Then there’s the growing secret that could transform this pretend relationship into the real thing…

Praise for Melinda Curtis: "Wonderfully entertaining!" Jayne Ann Krentz, NYT Bestseller (referring to Playing for Love)

"Reading Slade and Christine's story reminded me of why I enjoy romance. SEASON OF CHANGE has found a place on my keeper shelf!" Brenda Novak, NYT Bestseller

Their room in the bed & breakfast was small, just two twin beds. The comforters were a pale green and matched the shade of the thick towels in the tiny bathroom. As soon as the door closed and it was just Harley and Vince, the room felt as confining as a jail cell.

“You take the bed by the door.” Harley plopped her duffel and backpack on the one in the corner. “We need some ground rules. All changing will occur in the bathroom.”

“Oops.” Vince had ripped off his shirt while her back was turned.

She couldn’t un-see that, but Harley covered her eyes anyway. “Put your clothes back on.”

“Too late. I’m down to my boxers.”

She didn’t want to peek. Honest. But she did. His jeans were still on.

“Made you look.” That grin. He hadn’t smiled since they’d stepped foot on his family’s property. She hadn’t expected to see it after their talk in the restaurant.

The butterflies tried to return. She sucked in a breath and sucked in her stomach, stuffing every reaction to Vince—positive and negative—deep down inside. “What happened to the brooding man I’ve been with the better part of the day?”

“He came into a bedroom with a beautiful woman and all his cares slipped away.” It was a lie. Vince couldn’t quite erase the shadows around his eyes. “Or it could be that this is payback for telling Reggie I threw out my back.” He was teasing her. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe Vince needed some brevity after the stress of seeing his family for the first time in years.

Harley hit Vince with her pillow, grabbed her duffel and retreated to the bathroom. It was the size of the closet in her apartment. She contemplated taking a cold shower. But the shower stall was so small, she’d have trouble shaving her legs. She doubted Vince could fit his shoulders in there. She was getting claustrophobic just brushing her teeth.

And, boy, was she glad she’d decided to bring a football jersey and boxer shorts to sleep in rather than a nightie. Nothing sexy about a woman wearing a football jersey and boxers that reached to her knees.

“Are you decent?” she called through the door once she’d changed.

 “You used to think so.”

The impulse to submit to his charm was strong. Harley gritted her teeth and returned to the bedroom.

Vince sat up in bed, on top of the coverlet. Still no shirt on.

Harley’s jaw popped. This was going to be a test of wills. Mostly a test of her will.

Always the Hero by Anna J. Stewart He never relied on anyone but himself...but he needs her now! Butterfly Harbor deputy Matt Knight wants two things: to date Lori Bradley and the chance to adopt Kyle, a troubled teen. Wounded in Afghanistan, Matt knows he can't move forward anchored to the past. But once he regains the guarded hotel manager's trust, will his need to protect those he loves cost him a future with this extraordinary woman?

Praise for Anna J Stewart “The talented Anna J Stewart delivers every time.” ~NYTimes Bestselling Author Brenda Novak

“Anna J. Stewart will tug at your heartstrings more than once while leaving you utterly besotted with her characters.” ~The Romance Reviews

Matt Knight was all about doing right by people. Especially those he cared about. But there wasn’t any moving forward, not with his life, not with Lori, as long as he was still anchored to the past.

The phone rang. Before Matt could reach for the receiver, Jasper answered.

“It’s for you, Matt. A Chris Walters?”

“That’s Kyle’s caseworker,” Matt said as he picked up his extension.

 “Chris? Kyle okay?”

“Doing well, actually.” The social worker’s encouraging words belied the tension in his voice. “We’re still on track for an early release. For now at least.”

“What’s that mean?” Matt squeezed the receiver so hard his fingers tingled. “What’s going on?”

“The judge in charge of Kyle’s case is retiring. His replacement is reviewing all the cases ahead of time and, well, since we’re jumping beyond fosterage to adoption, she has some concerns about your living situation.”

“What’s wrong with my living situation?” Matt asked. “I’ve got a room ready for him, he’ll have a part-time job with the sheriff’s department, and most importantly he’ll have more stability than he’s known in years.”

“I’m on your side, remember? You don’t have to convince me. She’s not denying your petition, Matt, but she has suggested a female influence in the house wouldn’t be a bad thing for Kyle. And given your marital status...”

“That’s about to be resolved.” Matt looked down at the papers on his desk. “I filed the divorce papers and am getting ready to sign them as we speak.”

“Okay. We’ll have to see how that plays with the judge.”

“Given Kyle’s last female influence was too hopped-up on prescription meds to give him a second thought, I wouldn’t think this would be any judge’s first concern.” Matt hated to speak ill of Kyle’s mother, but the truth was the truth.

“It’s a concern, Matt. And the judge only suggested it would be in your and Kyle’s best interest if there was someone in your life to help bring a bit of balance. Even if it’s just a girlfriend, which brings me to what we talked about before. She’s going to want to call Lori as a character witness.”

“Lori? How does she know about Lori?” The last time his heart had pounded this hard he’d been dodging bullets.

“Because I listed her in my report. You said you were dating her, that you thought it was getting serious. Are you telling me something’s changed?”

Changed? Other than Matt all but ignoring her the last few weeks while he got his head on straight and cleared the emotional deck? “No, nothing’s changed,” Matt blurted before his brain could catch up with the panic seizing his chest. He’d made a promise to Kyle, and Matt Knight never made a promise he couldn’t keep. “We’ve been seeing each other for a while, off and on.” Most recently off. All the more reason to remedy that.

“She’s completely on board with me taking Kyle in.”

“So you’re okay with her listed as a character witness? She’ll back up your statement should the judge want to call her in during Kyle’s hearing?”

“Yeah, of course.” Matt swallowed the lie. Well, it wasn’t a lie exactly. Lori did know about Kyle but Matt’s current relationship with her might be a bit, well, up in the air. “Have they set a date yet for the hearing?”

“Um, yeah. Hang on, I’ve got that right...” The sound of shuffling papers scraped against Matt’s ear. “Three weeks from Monday. Looks like the judge has us penciled in for two in the afternoon.”

Matt scribbled the date on his calendar, noting that was the same day as the big welcome dinner that opened the Butterfly Festival. That would take some juggling given it was all hands on deck in town for the department. “I’ll be there.” Somehow. “I thought I’d come up and see him in a couple of weeks. Need to figure out my days off.”

“You’re on the visitor’s list for anytime,” Chris said. “I’m glad you told me about Lori. This will go a long way with this judge in approving Kyle’s placement.”

“I hope so.” With Kyle’s troubled past, the only other placement option for him would be a group foster home or to extend his stint in the detention center he currently resided in. “Let me know if there are any more changes.”

 “You got it.”

Matt hung up. Why was it, even when he had the best of intentions, he ended up messing things up? At least now he had even more of a reason to apologize to Lori. As much as he wanted her back in his life, he needed her.

Kyle needed her. Unease settled in his gut like a stone. He hated lying. To anyone.

 But especially to Lori Bradley.

“Everything okay?” Jasper asked. “Is Kyle still getting out?”

“He sure is.” Matt picked up his pen, clicked it open and scratched his name on the divorce degree. A few seconds later, he set the sealed envelope on the counter, where it would go out in the afternoon mail.

Loves Journey Home by Julie Coulter Bellon (review + giveaway)

Love's Journey Home by Julie Coulter Bellon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received eBook for review.
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Description:  Olivia Dalton has a reputation in the DA’s office—tough, thorough, and fierce when she’s closing a case. Those skills are essential in the courtroom, but not in the relationship department—until Mick Donovan crosses her path. Everyone thinks he’s a player, but when an unexpected situation arises, she glimpses an honorable man instead. Olivia is drawn to him, but he pushes her away, unable to shake the past that still haunts him.

Mick Donovan learned at a young age never to let anyone close because those you love never stay. Keeping people at arms-length has never been hard for him—until he meets Olivia Dalton. Mick is caught up in a case she’s prosecuting, and he can’t deny his attraction to her, but when she uncovers the past he’s kept carefully hidden, he’s sure she’ll turn away. Yet, even with all his secrets in the open, Olivia reaches out. Can he let his guard down long enough to let her in and take a chance on love?

My thoughts: This book was not what I was expecting. It is the first Julie Coulter Bellon book that I have read without suspense. I kept waiting for the guns to come out and the bad guys to make themselves known, but it didn't happen. Instead what I got was a good romance.

Basically, this book is about two people who both have emotional issues letting themselves trust and find love. It all begins with their love of a little boy being placed in foster care. Even that relationship wasn't what I expected, but the outcome was right and perfect for the story.

This is a clean romance with kissing. There are references to physical and drug abuse. No details are given.

Blog Tour Spotlight ~The Silent Song of Winter by Robin E Mason (with a #giveaway)

The Silent Song of Winter
Genre:  Historical, Romance
Publisher: Bird’s Nest Books
Publication date: February 28, 2018
When all the noise has gone silent, all that is left is her song.
The southern town of Saisons lies at the crossroads between North and South, progressive and genteel antebellum life. Between East and West, between history and heritage, and new frontiers. Downton Abbey meets Gone With the Wind.
It’s 1912, in a world where slavery is dying and women’s rights are rising, and four young women who once shared a bond—and experienced a tragedy—question their own truths.
Pearl had lived under the impossible taskmaster of perfection. Nothing she does or ever did pleased her mother. And nothing she ever did could disappoint her father.
Caught up in the mystery of her friend’s curious—and secretive—return, Pearl wrestles with her own decisions, and flees lest her own secrets are exposed.

10 Behind the Scenes Facts about the Book

  1. The words, “You’re nothing but a failure” sadly come from personal experience. It was a catalyst to untangle myself from the lies I had always believed.
  2. All four of my main characters in this series—Mercedes, Scarlett, Pearl, and Simone—find refuge and sanctuary being outdoors, which is very much something they share with me!
  3. I am well familiar with clinical depression, and both Scarlett (The Tilting Leaves of Autumn) and Pearl suffer from it. Their journey out of depression is written from the heart. It is a tug-of-war, darkness vs light, and it is very real. Though their particulars are different to what mine were, the agony and the struggle against it is very much what I lived.
  4. The main crop on Saisons Plantation is tea. I hadn’t given much thought to it, but was reading a book last year with tea as the crop. I created a blend adagio.com to match the tea in the story. It’s nutty and quite strong—and quite high octane!
  5. I “meet” my characters as I write—and take myriad notes! I’ll visualize the person, or “hear” them speaking; I feel rather like I’m transcribing my scenes as they play out in my head.
  6. Tag to #4—I type by touch, and sometimes write a scene with my eyes closed.
  7. I’m an actress, and this conveys really strongly my ability to be “in” the scene. (I really miss being on the stage… )
  8. I love, love, love doing the research. I love the odd and random facts I find to make my stories more authentic. For instance, the Pinard Horn. Invented by Dr. Adolphe Pinard, it is what midwives use to hear the baby’s heart rate.
  9. I also love history! Set in 1912 and 1913, Seasons takes place just before World War I.  Most of what I found in my research dealt with specifics to the war and the years after. One of the key characters is German, and I had to dig to find what I needed for his story.
  10. In my willy nilly approach to who’s who, I realized (thankfully early on!) that some of the ages of some of the characters didn’t line up! I create an extensive Word doc of names and ages (including birthdates) and who’s married to whom, etc. And one of the fascinating snippets is revealed in The Whispering Winds of Spring…..

“Penny for your thoughts.” Mercedes was lost in thought, pretending to inspect the ballroom for Violet’s grand tea.
She whirled around, staring blankly.
“I… was… inspecting the ballroom. For the tea.” She ran her fingers along the wainscoting for good measure. “On Wednesday.”
“Hmmm.”
“Pearl.” Mimicking her, I ran my fingers along the wainscoting on the opposite of the room. “What if… what if you found out your father—or mother” —she was scaring me— “weren’t who you thought they were.”
“What did you say?” My heart pounded as loud as a brass band.
“I… I…” She seemed suddenly deflated. “Never mind.”
But I couldn’t let it go. I had to know what she meant. “What did you say, Mercedes?”
“Nothing. I…” She pulled back, pulled against my grip. “Pearl, you’re scaring me.”
I held fast to her arm and repeated my question.
“I found something…”
I thought I might faint right there on Mercedes waxed ballroom floor.
Mon père…”
“Ton père?”
“I saw some documents…” What was she talking about? Clearly not what I thought, what I had suspected. “I was probably mistaken.”
I slipped through the gauzy drapes as evening closed in.
“Did you need something?” Mercedes’ voice followed after me like a ghost as I hurried down the steps.

About the Author

robin-e-mason_1_origI’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!
I have been writing since 1995, and began working in earnest on my debut novel, Tessa in 2013.  Meanwhile, I cranked out a few dozen poems, made countless notes for story ideas, and earned my BFA in Interior Design.  I lived with depression for many years, and the inherent feelings of worthlessness and invisibility; I didn’t want to be who I was and struggled with my own identity for many years.  My characters face many of these same demons.
I write stories of identity conflict. My characters encounter situations that force the question, “Who am I really?” For all who have ever wondered who you are or why you’re here, my stories will touch you in a very real—maybe too real—and a very deep way. I know, I write from experience.
