INTERVIEW WITH HEATHER B. MOORE

1.      How did you get started as an author?  

When I was thirty I had an idea for a story. It became a strange process since I never considered 

writing a novel before. I was an avid reader and held authors in high esteem. When I started 

writing that first story, it was like the floodgates had opened. One of the most inspirational books 

I’ve read is Kitchen Privileges by Mary Higgins Clark. I’ve long been a mystery fan and when I 

read this memoir, I realized that it was possible to be a writer and a mother at the same time. Ms. 

Clark inspired me when she said she’d write from 5:00-7:00 a.m. every morning so as not to 

interfere with her job and her kids (she was a widow at the time). I thought, “I can do that.” And 

I did—it took three novels before I finally got one published, but Clark’s story inspired me not to 

give up.

2.      What writing project are you currently working on?  What can you tell us about these 

projects? 

I’m currently editing the next Omar Zagouri thriller that I’m calling SLAVE QUEEN.  This book is a mixture of modern-day and historical setting based on the story of the sultan Suleyman and his favorite wife, Roxelane. She was living in the Kingdom of Poland in the early 1500s when she was abducted by the Turks and brought to the sultan’s harem in Constantinople. There she worked her way up through the harem to become a wife of the sultan. I’m also drafting the 3rd book in The Moses Chronicles series.

3.      How important are the names in your novels?  How do you choose names for your 

characters?  Do you have any name resources you would suggest? 

I write a lot of historical fiction, so I try to use as many real names as possible. The other names I 

choose, I try to use names that aren’t super common, but names that aren’t too strange sounding. I 

want them unique, but pronounceable. I also try to make sure I don’t have more than one name starting with the same letter or sounding too similar, if at all possible. I just google names such as “female Turkish names” then scan through the list.

4.      What authors inspire your writing? 

Some of my favorite authors include Mary Higgins Clark, Maeve Binchy, Barbara Kingsolver, and Michelle Moran. They have interesting life stories and write in different genres.

5.      What period of history interests you the most?  Does this influence your writing? 

I’m drawn to historical events that change the course of history. For instance, my book LOST KING 

that comes out in December is about Hatshepsut, a woman who became Pharaoh of Egypt. And 

the current book I’m working on follows a woman who rises from slavery to become a sultan’s 

wife.

6.      What inspired the idea for your story in the Mariposa Hotel novel? 

When Julie, Melanie, and I brainstormed our plots, I wanted my heroine to be employed at the hotel in a management type position so that she was facing a lot of conflict each day. And then of course 

the hero had to be someone who would help her deal with the conflict. He needed a reason to be 

at the posh resort, so I made him a talented and wealthy man, but his work had dominated his life 

so he hadn’t allowed himself to carry on a serious relationship. But as I started writing, it all flip-

flopped and the heroine became the woman to the rescue.

7.      If you could choose someone famous to star in one of your books made to a movie, who would you choose and for which character? 

 I have nothing. I’m so behind on movies and TV that I’d probably name someone who is dead. LOL.

8.     What other hobbies do you enjoy when you are not writing? 

I  love to read and traveling is fun when possible. I love nature walks and doing puzzles.

Not Your Average Beauty

For centuries beyond count, mothers have passed down folk or fairy tales to their daughters. 

Each tale contained a valuable lesson. Snow White worked hard to earn her keep and waited for her prince to finally rescue her. Cinderella was rewarded for being obedient in the face of 

hardship. Sleeping Beauty waited for her prince to slay the beast before bringing her and the 

kingdom back to life. And Beauty agreed to an arranged marriage with a monster to save her

If you look at the basic outline, it’s easy to be critical of classic fairy tales in today’s world. Most taught young girls lessons in submissiveness and obedience at all costs. If they were truly good at heart, their reward would come. The old world tales were part of the feminine tradition, a way for mothers to ease their daughters into the roles they would play out. Modern feminism teaches about the strength of women, our ability to rescue ourselves through independence and self-reliance. This is why most modern retellings of classic fairy tales spin the heroine’s role quite a bit. Today’s fairy tales teach girls to be strong, to take up arms alongside the men if needed, to create their own happy ever after. 

“Craving Beauty” is a dark fairy tale retelling of Beauty & the Beast with elements of gothic 

romance thrown in the mix. There is no singing and dancing clocks and teapots in our heroine’s

world, and Vynasha is no average “Beauty”. Like many modern fairy tale retellings, she displays a blend of classic and modern traits. 

When we first meet our heroine, she has lost virtually everything in life except for her roses and nephew, Wyll. Her mother died when she was a little girl, and her father and brother, Ceddrych, have been away so long they may as well have died too. For a time she tried to make the best of things with her sisters, until a fire took their lives as well. She barely managed to pull her nephew out of the flames in time, leaving both of them horribly scarred. It took years for her to rebuild a life for her and Wyll, but her nephew never fully recovered. 

Vynasha doesn’t care about the fact the people in their village fear them, or call her a witch 

behind her back. She tends her mother’s rose garden and tries to keep Wyll alive each winter. 

And she blames herself for the fire that took her sisters lives. The scars she carries outside don’t begin to match the ones she carries inside. With a new winter approaching and Wyll weaker than ever, she knows there’s little time left. She can’t wait anymore for her father and brother to return home to rescue them and decides to take action.

As I mentioned before, Vynasha is not your average “Beauty”. She was beautiful once, but now 

is covered in scars. She has little interest in romance or personal goals but doesn’t consider 

herself to be selfless. From an early age, like so many women today, she learned to get by on her own. Sometimes the prince doesn’t come in time and the damsel has to rescue them both. In “Craving Beauty”, Vynasha will discover that her inner beauty, like her bravery comes in many shapes and sizes.

The message of fairy tales is just as relevant today as it was centuries ago. Our culture and 

perspectives may have changed in the meantime, but all of us crave beauty and love in our lives. 

Like Vynasha, I went through times where I didn’t think myself worthy of love. But once I 

stopped searching for it, once I focused on the things that mattered most, love found me. I hope 

as you read Craving Beauty, no matter where you are in life, you are reminded how strong and 

beautiful you are both inside and out.

My thoughts: Books set in Wales or with characters from Wales are always a draw for me.  This book is set about 10 years before my Great Grandmother left Wales with her mother and immigrated to the United States.

The book deals with change.  The town of Llandwddyn is about to be leveled and moved to another location.  A dam will be built that will cover the town.  The main character's, Gwen, brother has just left to follow his dream.  He has always wanted to work on a ship and see new places.  Gwen has a hard time adjusting to new things.  She is resistant to change.  This book looks at her life during a hard time period.

This book is beautifully written.  It is easy to relate to and like the characters.  I love the reflective nature of the book.  I felt as if I could see the area she described and get a feel for the culture and people.

This is a clean historical romance.

My thoughts: I LOVED this Regency Collection. Each story is well written and fun to read. There was not a story that I didn't fall in love with the characters and plot.

I really liked that the characters were surprised at how they fell in love. Nothing was as they had planned. Expectations were changed and romance happened. I really like stories were the characters realize that they were wrong and that they can find happiness in an unexpected way.

This is the perfect book for clean regency romance readers. The length of each story is perfect when you want to have the satisfaction of finishing a story in a short period of time.

My thoughts: I am writing this review with mixed emotions. The book has a powerful message and really tugged at my heart.

Sandpiper finds herself in a marriage to a man she doesn't know. He is also odd, which makes things more uncertain. She also carries a secret which would have a negative impact on her future.

Lark must marry. As the second son of the chief, he has an obligation to his family and tribe. Traveling far to a friendly tribe is his hope for finding a wife and a family of his own.

I loved the setting of this book. Lark and Sandpiper live in ancient times after the disappearance of the Mayan's. They live on a hill that covers the ancient temple. Close by is a Cenote, their source of water and greatest fear.

The building relationship between the two illustrate how they are better together than alone. Secrets threaten to pull them apart, but they realize why they need to be together. I loved their commitment to each other and their family. The family plays a central part to the book. The strong sense of community and love are powerful.

This story makes you think. It is not a story to finish and them immediately move on to the next book. There are many layers that brought this story to life for me. I highly recommend this book.

There is some innuendo (sometimes it made me laugh).  The book is about a couple who are married and struggling with their relationship, this does lead to adult situations that are not descriptive.

My thoughts:  Jessie is put in a situation not of her making. She is unable to have children. She is trying to emotionally deal with the loss of a premature baby and infertility when she finds out that her husband fathered a child before they were marries. It is a fact that had been kept hidden from both of them. Their marriage was in trouble before the news and this doesn't help it at all.

Jessie goes through several emotions. I liked that she was shaken up enough by the news to start making positive changes in her life. She becomes a stronger person through the adversity. I appreciated the fact that even though the couple was having marital problems, they still worked to stay together.

This book is written well. Jennifer Peel does a great job at laying the plot and moving it forward. I enjoy her writing style and look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

I looked forward to something, too. I turned my attention back to my husband, who was walking my way. Maddie and Katie had already skipped off and were sitting at the counter talking to the café cashier. 

“What are you doing here?”

“Why do you always ask me that when I come here? I thought it was obvious by now.”

“I know how you love dessert,” I teased.

He shook his head at me. “I do love something here.”

“The fireplace?”

“It is nice.”

“If you’re interested I can give you the name and number of the builder.”

“I heard he’s busy with his wife.”

“She can be a handful.”

“You have no idea.”

I loved the playful conversation, but I realized we were having it in front of a captivated audience. My little ladies were still there and looking like they had landed front row seats to the best show in town.

I reached out and took Blake’s hand. “Follow me,” I whispered. I pulled him to the hall that led to the back offices. As soon as we turned the corner I backed up against the wall and looked up into those beautiful eyes of his that were shining down on me. “So what are you really doing here?”

He placed his hand above my head and leaned down toward me and barely brushed my lips with his. “I’ve missed you this week.”

“Are you done at the Andersons’ place?” I asked a little out of breath. His kisses had that effect on me.

“Tomorrow.”

“You’ll be done before the game, right?”

“I’m not going to miss the game.”

That was good news. We were playing Riley’s Insurance and I had a good feeling this year. We hadn’t lost a game yet and this was the best team we had ever had. “Are you working late tonight?”

“Unfortunately. I have to head back in a few minutes.”

“I’m glad you stopped by, then.”

He leaned in and his lips found mine. My hands landed nicely on his chest as our lips fell into sync and the pressure built until his mouth invited mine to open. When the invitation was taken, he groaned low and pressed my body against the wall with his own. My hands moved up his chest and back through his hair. For a minute I forgot we were at the café and why I had any issue at all with physical affection. I had missed us.

With the sound of a glass breaking in the distance, we were brought back to our senses and our lips unlocked. I let out a deep breath. “Uh, wow.”

His hand found its spot back above my head as he leaned toward me, but there was now some space between us. “I second that.”
