Genre:Christian Historical Fiction
Book Description: A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who can help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing for good.
An Irish-born son far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and start a farm, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered, especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t accept yet cannot possibly refuse.
Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the annual Drayton Stakes at Nashville’s racetrack––the richest race run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance, and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder, Maggie’s father––aging, yet wily as ever––makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail––Maggie must marry a man she’s never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.
Cullen and Maggie need each other in order to achieve their dreams. But their stubborn, wounded hearts––and the escalating violence from a "secret society" responsible for lynchings and midnight raids––may prove too much for even two determined souls.
My thoughts: To Win Her Favor is a Christian Historical Romance that takes place post Civil War in Tennessee. There are some hard facts presented are hard to read. I grateful that Tamera Alexander did not gloss over the prejudice and violence that was part of everyday life for the people of African and Irish descent.
The two main characters in this book are Maggie and Cullen. They enter into a marriage of convenience. She wanted to save her family home, he wanted to own land in an area where the Irish need not apply.
I enjoyed that Tamera wrote about the progression of their relationship from strangers to a loving couple. They don't immediately fall in love, get along, or have meaningful conversations. Their love and trust was earned.
I have read a few reviews where others were bothered by the violence and the innuendo in the book. I did not find either to be inappropriate or offensive to me. The language, attitudes, and violence against the black people were disturbing, but they were historically accurate. Words that we find offensive today were common during the time period.
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written. I loved the characters. Many were good and honest people trying to make their way in the world and I appreciated their different struggles and experiences.
I felt that the story focused on repentance and forgiveness. There are so many wonderful things that this book has in it's pages.
Because of some of the content, I would classify this as an adult book.

Middle Grade Book Review ~ "Dragon Tears" by Nancy Segovia
Dragon Tears by Nancy SegoviaMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received from Author to review
Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy
Book Description: Can a boy without magic and a dragon that can’t fly save their world from destruction?
In a land of magic users, one boy is born without magic. In a realm of angry dragons, one dragon befriends a human boy. Together, they follow their hearts on a journey to save their land. They are joined by a wily old wizard and another young dragon on a quest into the unknown to find the creator dragon – Skyhawk — the only one who can save their world from a devastating war. Adventure and danger awaits the misfit group as they travel across the endless Sea of Lights, escape the mysterious earth dragons in the Valley of Death, and continue to search for the mythical Singing Mountains and Cloud Caverns. Will they succeed in finding the powerful dragon and prevent the coming war, or will they fail in their quest, and lose not only their lives but all of creation as well?
My thoughts: The book has unlikely heroes and friends working together to make a difference.
This book is a fantasy read for middle grade readers. A human boy lives without magical ability, in a land where all humans are magical. A dragon is shunned because he cannot flame or fly. Both need a friend, another that they can relate too when they accidentally find each other and realize that the divide between humans and dragons can be bridged.
They learn of a war between humans and dragons and leave on a journey over ocean, singing mountains, and the valley of death to find the Dragon King. They are joined by a wizard and another dragon friend as they face the dangers together.
The book is written in an easy language that middle grade readers will connect with. There is enough action to keep boredom at bay and adventures to for imagination to emerge. The book ends with a battle between good and evil. It's not a completely happy ending, but leaves the reader satisfied with the resolution.

I would like readers to feel good about the story’s conclusion, and believe that no matter what hardships we may face, we can overcome them with faith, perseverance and—of course—love!
Word Wranglers - Interview
It still surprises me sometimes, especially considering that I haven’t been at it very long. If someone else were to ask me, I would say that if they are passionate about it and have started writing, they are a writer. For me, it was when I finished my first manuscript.
Write & Rewrite - Kate Talks About Making Revisions
Author Kate James stops by today on the first leg of her blog tour for her new romance novel The Truth About Hope. Her revision story is one of the most charming ones I've come across, and I hope you enjoy it.
Underneath the Covers - Luke Carter
Luke and Hope were born in the same small town in Texas, had been best friends since grade school and were high-school sweethearts, until Hope was forced to move to San Jose to live with her father. Luke had never gotten entirely over Hope...
You speak five languages. Which languages and what were the greatest challenges in learning each one?
The languages are English, Spanish, French, Hungarian and German, but sadly I did not remain fluent in the ones I did not use. I can still understand Spanish and French, but it would be a struggle to try to speak coherently. As a child, I found the languages easy to learn, especially being immersed in them. While not a challenge but an interesting consequence, probably into my early twenties my English was slightly accented, but no one could place the accent as it was an amalgam of the other languages I had spoken.
Letters from Annie (Douglass) Lima - Canyon Creek, Part 1
During one of our stays with our friends in Texas, we visited a breathtaking promontory close to their home. I’ve fictionalized it for The Truth About Hope. It is an important setting in the story as the event that precipitates the circumstances related to her departure and her reconnection with her high-school sweetheart, Luke, occur there.
We first meet Hope as a seventeen-year-old girl, just having lost her mother, and learning that she has to leave Canyon Creek, the small town in Texas where she was born, to live with her father in San Jose. Most devastating for her is that she has to say goodbye to all the people she knows and loves, including Luke Carter.
I Am A Reader - Excerpt
The buoyancy she’d felt as she’d driven toward the rising sun faded, and she felt a ripple of apprehension. In tune with her mood as always, Einstein ambled over and nuzzled her hand. She automatically stroked the top of his head. “Well, we might as well get this over with,” she murmured.
Katie's Clean Book Collection - Review
"I loved the way the characters value each other and aren't afraid to admit their mistakes. The story flows well and leaves a reader feeling satisfied. With a blend of mild suspense, hard work and values, and a sweet romance, this one is a hit!"
Copyright1985 - Excerpt
She lowered her head. “Great. Just great,” she muttered. Those mischievous fates just had to have another go at her today, didn’t they? Of all the people they could’ve thrown in her path, it had to be Luke. Probably served her right for not being able to keep her mind off him.
My Love for Reading Keeps Growing - Canyon Creek, Part 2
I remember vividly the spot where my husband and I stood on a brilliant May morning, and I knew I’d have to write that setting in a book at some point. The Truth About Hope gave me the perfect opportunity! I hope you enjoy this wonderful slice of Texas!
Story Broads - Excerpt
LUKE DIDN’T KNOW what had compelled him to go for his Saturday-morning run along Yardley Drive and up to Promontory Park. As he turned onto the gravel path from the sidewalk, he came to an abrupt halt. Sitting on the bench with her back to him was Hope. There was no mistaking that long, mahogany hair, even in a ponytail and under a ball cap.
i blog 4 books - Review
"Overall, this was a pleasant read. Animal lovers, in particular, will enjoy reading about Hope and Noah's efforts to rescue animals."
Rockin' Book Reviews - Review & Interview
"The story of love, family struggles, faith, hope and forgiveness had me captivated from the beginning. The story of Hope sent a sense of reality and a real desire for her to have true happiness."You speak five languages.
The Written Adventure - Canyon Creek, Part 3
Hope builds a fulfilling life of her own in the years since she’s left Canyon Creek. Yet, more than ten years after her departure, the emotional tug is still there when she returns . . .
Write from the Heart - Review
"What I enjoyed most about The Truth About Hope, was the refreshing honesty of the characters. Hope and Luke still carry a flame for each other after all those years, and the reader gets the pleasure of following them on their journey toward forgiveness and a rekindled love."
Bookworm Lisa - Review
"The book is told in a narrative style. It's normally not my favorite writing style, but Kate James does a great job of making it work. She was able to keep my interest in the story and characters."
Getting Your Read On - Review
"I enjoyed following Hope through her life events. I really got a good sense of who Hope was and why she did what she did. . . . This was a good book, so easy to settle in with. The characters were all so likable. Yay for another sweet, clean romance!"
Author June McCrary Jacobs - Interview
How do develop your characters? Do you use outlines, story boards, sketches?KATE: Interestingly I’ve never thought about using sketches, despite the fact that I’ve always enjoyed drawing and painting. Thank you for the idea, though. I might have to try it! To answer the question, I have a general idea of what my characters look like, their traits and beliefs, when I start the book, but they evolve and grow as my writing progresses. The only guide I use for my writing is the book proposal or synopsis, but I can always visualize quite clearly what my characters look like, and have a good appreciation of how they will behave in specific circumstances.

To tide me over until I finish the book, here is an interview that was shared with me (and I was given permission to share it with you).
Q: To Win Her Favor
is the second in your Belle Meade Plantation series. Can you tell us where the
story picks up in the series? Is it directly connected to the first book?
Each of the Belle Meade Plantation
novels are standalone novels, so each tells a complete story. However, you
might just catch a glimpse <wink> of Ridley and Olivia from To
Whisper Her Name in To Win Her Favor (releasing May 12, 2015). But
Cullen and Maggie’s
story definitely takes center stage in To Win Her Favor, the second of
three novels in the Belle Meade Plantation series.
Coming in July is a Belle Meade
Plantation novella—To
Mend a Dream. To Mend a Dream continues the story of a secondary character we
meet in To Win Her Favor, Savannah Darby. Savannah is Maggie’s closest friend and while we learn
about Savannah’s
struggles in To Win Her Favor, the culmination of her story is told in
To Mend a Dream, a novella in a Southern novella collection entitled, Among
the Fair Magnolias (written with authors Shelley Shepard Gray, Dorothy
Love, and Elizabeth Musser).
You are a resident of
Nashville, which is a city rich with culture and history. Is this why you chose
to set your series there?
I’ve always had a love of history. Southern history,
specifically. Being from Atlanta, I grew up around antebellum homes, so when I
was in Nashville on a business trip in 2004 with my daughter, we toured the
Belmont Mansion, and I knew then I wanted to someday write about Belmont’s fascinating history (A Lasting
Impression and A Beauty So Rare). Likewise, when I learned about
Belle Meade’s
thoroughbred legacy, the ideas started coming (for To Whisper Her Name
and To Win Her Favor). I’m honored to write about these two Nashville estates and
their real history. It never gets old for me.
How many times did you visit
the actual Belle Meade Plantation while writing this book?
Oh gracious, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been out there (Belle Meade is
only 25 minutes from my house). Just two weeks ago, I met a book club of about
30 women at Belle Meade. They were from Alabama, having a girl’s weekend out! After they toured the
mansion, we walked down to the old Harding cabin, one of my favorite places at
Belle Meade, and where Belle Meade all began. No visit to Belle Meade is
complete for me without stopping by that cabin. It has such a presence about
it.
I’m grateful to Belle Meade’s director, Alton Kelley (a descendant of the Harding
family who owned Belle Meade in the 1800s) and to Jenny Lamb (Belle Meade
Educational Director) for opening up the family files, letters, and artifacts
to me. I couldn’t
write these books with such historical detail about the house, the family
members, and the servants without Belle Meade’s assistance.
How much of the novel is
based on actual events and how much is from your imagination?
The backdrop of the novel—Nashville’s history, the Belle Meade mansion,
outbuildings of the estate, the family members, and most of the servants at
Belle Meade—are
from history. I often take documented historical events—such as parties, horse races, or
catastrophic occurrences—and
weave them into the fabric of my stories. Then I intertwine a fictional story
that follows the journey of a male and female protagonist within that story
world. In To Win Her Favor, that’s Cullen McGrath and Maggie Linden.
The basis for Cullen’s character is founded in the history
of Irishmen who came to Nashville in the 1850-70s, and who faced very real
prejudice from Nashville residents. Likewise, Maggie’s character was inspired by accounts
of women who were formerly landed gentry (from wealthy families who were major
land owners) but who lost everything following the war and the changes that
conflict brought. The rest of the details are filled in by asking myself the
question writers constantly ask themselves, "What if…"
How was this book different
from other projects you have worked on?
To Win Her Favor is definitely one of the more passionate stories I’ve written, and I don’t mean that solely in a romantic
sense. From the start, this story was simply more evocative because it delves
into the intimacies of a marriage of convenience, and also explores prejudice within
a marriage—in
addition to examining the prejudices between former slave owners and
former slaves. Passions run high between the characters in To Win Her Favor.
Everyone was learning how to be with each other in that time period, learning
where the new boundaries were, where everyone fit.
As I read and researched for To
Win Her Favor, I often found my own emotions stirred by real events that
occurred in Nashville during Reconstruction. At times, the accounts were
repugnant and heartbreaking. Yet at others, they were remarkably soul stirring
with fresh whispers of hope.

Book Review ~ "Dauntless" by Dina L Sleiman
Dauntless by Dina L. Sleiman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley (received to review)
Genre: Historical Fiction
Book Description: Though once a baron's daughter, Lady Merry Ellison is willing to go to any lengths to protect the orphaned children of her former village. Dubbed "The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest," her band of followers soon become enemies of the throne when they hijack ill-gotten gold meant for the king.
Timothy Grey, ninth child of the Baron of Greyham, longs to perform some feat so legendary that he will rise from obscurity and earn a title of his own. When the Ghosts of Farthingale Forest are spotted in Wyndeshire, where he serves as assistant to the local earl, he might have found his chance. But when he comes face-to-face with the leader of the thieves, will he choose fame or love?
My thoughts: I have a fascination with the medieval time period. This book was one that I really enjoyed reading.
The book is set during the time of King John. The legend of Robin Hood is mentioned a few times. The band of outlaws were different that Robin Hood, this band was made up of children whose families had been killed when the Baron rebelled against King John.
They are led by a young woman by the name of Merry. Her father was the rebel and she felt responsible to keep the children alive. They were already outlaws because they lived. It made sense that they made their living by stealing from the rich.
I couldn't help but love the children. Their love and acceptance of each other was admirable. The devotion the older children/teens of the band had for their charges was inspirational. I liked the spirit of giving and not giving up that filled the pages of the story.
This book contains some violence and a bit of a love story. I didn't find the violence graphic and the romance is clean.

Blog Tour ~ "The Truth About Hope" by Kate James + tour giveaway!
On Tour with Prism Book Tours.
by Kate James
Adult Contemporary Romance
May 1st 2015 by Harlequin Heartwarming
Is she the girl her former hometown thinks she is? Or the girl Luke Carter once loved—and maybe still does?
When Hope returns to Canyon Creek, Texas, to honor her
father’s last wishes, there’s only one person on her mind: her high school sweetheart, Luke. The boy she lied to when she had to leave Canyon Creek as a teen, finding it easier to hide what she really felt than deal with the grief of loss. Her father’s fortune could make a big difference to Canyon Creek—but Hope finds that the townspeople have a long memory about his misdeeds. With a plan to make amends on his behalf, Hope learns the truth about herself. And the truth about love.
My thoughts: The main character has the perfect name, Hope. When the book begins there are many things going wrong in her life. Her mother has just passed away and she is forced to move from Texas to California with a father she has never know. She leaves behind family and the boy she loved, Luke.
The book is told in a narrative style. It's normally not my favorite writing style, but Kate James does a great job of making it work. She was able to keep my interest in the story and characters.
The characters make a lot of mistakes. Many of the past mistakes have made Kate a victim. The mistakes of her parents have left a hole in her life. Her mother was wonderful. Her father was controlling and absent. Their breakup left a community on the break of financial ruin. Yes, that is extreme, but a central part of the story.
Hope then made her own mistake when she burned the emotional bridge to the town where she grew up. She made sure that it would not be easy to return. She wouldn't have if her father hadn't stipulated it in his will.
I really liked that Hope was loving. In spite of her circumstances she was able to surround herself with good friends whom she cared for and they returned the feelings. Her love and longing for animals showed the strength of her character. In spite of the many obstacles in her way, she continued to press forward and make the best of her circumstance.
I found the book about rectifying mistakes. Can one make amends? Can happiness be found? This is part of Hope's journey. A difficult journey to discover the answers to the questions.
This book is clean. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest opinion. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Kate married her husband, Ken, in an elegant, ocean-front wedding on a tropical island. When they are not traveling, they split their time between their properties in southern and central Ontario in Canada, with their beloved black Labs, Harley and Logan.
