Airel-Arson-Pyxis tour with a book giveaway

Today I am very happy to have Chris White on Bookworm Lisa. In July 2011 his co-author, Aaron Patterson stopped by for an interview.  You can go here to see the post.  Needless to say, I love the book.  I am definitely planning on reading all of the books featured in this tour.

****************

Hi, I’m Chris White, one of the co-authors of Airel. And today I’m going to tell you just a little bit about the book Aaron and I wrote together.

Probably the most common question we get is, “How did you guys manage to write a book together; I mean, just how does that work, exactly?” Well I’m glad you hypothetically asked.

The answer is simple, really. Aaron and I take turns. He leads off with the rough draft and then hands it to me and I have a go. I add at least 37 pieces of flair and then hand it back to him and we arm wrestle over what stays and what goes. I usually lose. In the end, we come up with a final product that is representative of both of us, and everyone’s happy except the villain in the story, which is as it should be.

Want an excerpt? I thought you did. Here you go:

Boise, Idaho. Present day.

When the door opened and I saw Michael Alexander stand up stiffly, I stood paralyzed, hoping with everything in me that what I feared was not happening, that this was all just a bad dream. He was staring at me with an unsettling mixture of awe and disbelief.

“Your head... the…” His voice was soft, questioning and scared. “It‘s gone, I mean it just disappeared!” He reached out, muttering something incoherent, trying to touch my forehead. But I ducked and took a step backward. He lowered his eyebrows and folded his arms across his chest. “Airel—”

My mind refused to function. Despite the fact that I needed it more than ever at this very moment, it hid like a stupid kid on his first day of school, refusing to come out from under the bed. Should I pretend that I didn‘t know what was happening? Play innocent? Or should I fess up to the only person I was comfortable fessing up to about this subject? Why can’t I let myself bring Kim in on all this, but with him… I looked at the gorgeous guy standing before me. Maybe I knew deep down that he would understand it... or me. If that was possible. There was no getting around it, though—I was a turncoat. A backstabbing fiend, for sure, because I was totally trashing the feelings of my best friend for…some dude…

I reached a trembling hand to my forehead and touched the place where, seconds ago, a large goose-egg throbbed. It was smooth, cool to the touch. Healed.

I stood there with my best impression of a confused, blank look on my face. I looked up at Michael, who was standing so close to me now that I could smell his skin. “I, uh…” The brilliant words that flowed from my lips in that moment would have made the great poets of the world stop, slack-jawed, and gaze at me in wonder and amazement at the brilliance of my answer.

Michael had a tentative hand on my forehead and touched ever so gently the spot where my fatty welt used to be. “Does it hurt?”

“No…” I responded, leaving all kinds of loose ends. What blanks would he fill in?

“Weird, it‘s gone. Like it was never there. You sure that doesn‘t hurt?” He pressed harder to test out his theory.

I pulled away, breaking free, and scowled at him. “Well…what. So it‘s gone. Maybe it wasn‘t as bad as I thought it was. Maybe I didn‘t hit it that hard anyway.” Pretty weak, lame and worst of all, chock full of maybe. It sounded like a lie to my own ears, and from the grimace on Michael’s face, I knew that he didn‘t believe a word of it either.

“Come on Airel, what‘s going on? You know more than you‘re letting on and now you‘re lying to me.” He sounded angry and a little hurt as well.

I sighed loudly and pulled on a few strands of my hair and shoved my left hand in my back pocket. I decided right then that I was going to tell Michael everything and hold nothing back.

Okay, kids, that’s all for now. Hey, that’s why it’s called a teaser. Airel is available now for Amazon Kindle and in print, (also here) plus it’s on Nook as well. You can follow the C.P. White Media Blog for all the latest on what I’m up to, plus friend me up on FB, Twitter, and Google Plus. Thanks for being a fan! Review of "Legacy" by Cayla Kluver

Legacy by Cayla Kluver

Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley

Book Description: I noticed his eyes. They were blue, sharp and intense.
Despite the youthful glow of his suntanned face, his eyes were
cold and unfriendly, suggesting he had great experience in the
world and was now expecting the worst.

A CROWN PRINCESS

A SCANDALOUS SECRET CRUSH

A KINGDOM ON THE BRINK OF DISASTER

In her seventeenth year, Princess Alera of Hytanica faces one duty: to marry the man who will be king. But her father’s choice of suitor fills her with despair.

When the palace guard captures an intruder—a boy her age with steel-blue eyes, hailing from her kingdom’s greatest enemy—Alera is alarmed…and intrigued. But she could not have guessed that their clandestine meetings would unveil the dark legacy shadowing both their lands.

In this mystical world of court conspiracies and blood magic, loyalties will be tested. Courage won’t be enough. And as the battle begins for everything Alera holds dear, love may be the downfall of a kingdom.

Colleen's Thoughts: After learning that the author was 16 years old when the book was written, I was a little skeptical. However, I was gloriously surprised by her writing abilities. It is hard to believe it was written by someone so young. She writes with such emotional depth. She has the ability to portray her characters in a startlingly realistic way. I was completely enraptured from the beginning to the end. Cayla Kluver is a wonderful story-teller and beautifully eloquent. I was sad the book was over. I eagerly anticipate the remaining books in the trilogy and anything else she may write in the future.

Review ~ Birthright (The Dark Gifts) by Willow Cross

The Dark Gifts BirthrightThe Dark Gifts Birthright by Willow Cross

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Genre: Adult Paranormal
Source: I can't remember and I can't find an email (sorry)

Book Description from Goodreads: Throughout the ages, druids have passed down a prophecy from one generation to the next. A girl, born of a witch clan, will become vampyre and spark a war that will divide the vampire nation. This young woman will either save humanity from vampire reign, or be the end of it. Although she’s never heard the prophecy, and doesn’t believe in witchcraft, Liz Markum is that woman.

Working with her maker, Michael, and the remaining members of the warring Vampire Council, Liz must defeat the darkness inside her, and learn to become more than a killer vampire. She must become a vampire killer.

My thoughts: This book had a great start, it grabbed my attention and I was thoroughly enjoying it.
Somewhere in the middle it began to drag and was  bogged down in the details.  Even though some of my interest was lost, there was enough to make me want to continue to the end.

This book is told in a narrative style. Liz has been transformed into a vampire. It is a mystery for a while, because it usually takes three bites to transform a human. Michael only bit her once, thinking that she would make a great snack. She is also a mystery because she masters the vampire powers much sooner than a newly formed vampire should.  The bond between Liz and Michael is instantaneous. They go from acquaintances to madly in love in almost a heartbeat.

She finds herself in the middle of a vampire war. It pretty much takes off at her turning. Vampires are not allowed to turn another without gaining permission from the vampire council. Michael is a law abiding vampire and the assassin for the vampires. His turning of Liz heats up a great debate and old feuds.

There are many paranormal creatures in this book. You have vampires, witches, druids and ghosts.  It really is entertaining and a decent book.  It is worth reading, maybe not more than once though.  It's currently 99 US cents on Amazon.

This book is pretty clean. There is mild swearing. While this is geared to an adult audience, I would be comfortable letting older teens read this book.

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of  Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!
Just do the following:

          ~Grab your current read.

          ~Open to a random page.

~Share two "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page. (Sometimes I cheat a bit on this one and do a few more sentences.)
~Be careful not to include spoilers! (make sure that what you share doesn't give to much away.               You don't want to ruin the book for others.)
~Share the title and author, so the other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teaser.  :0)

This week I am reading Birthright (The Dark Gifts) by Willow Cross.  It's on my Sony eReader, so I think the page number listed may be an approximate. :)  I am enjoying this one!

Around them, the air grew still as if the forest held its breath in anticipation of what could happen next.

Hair on arms and necks began to rise as if charged by an electric current.  pg 108

Review of "Time Gangsters" by Berin L Stephens ~ Blog Tour

Time GangstersTime Gangsters by Berin L. Stephens

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley to review
Age recommendation: Middle Grade
Release Date: Februay 8, 2012 / Cedar Fort

Description from Goodreads: When Billy discovers a hidden cache of ancient coins, it isn't long before a gang of thugs swipes them right from under Billy. Plotting to use the magical properties of the coins to seize power in the past, these power-hungry gangsters will do anything to reach their goal. Their future threatened, Billy and Danny must race through time to steal back the coins---before history is changed forever!

My thoughts: Billy and Danny find themselves the unwanted objects of attention from gangsters that lived in the 1920's. One night Billy is visited by a man with a Tommy gun and Danny has someone in her room demanding coins. The thing they have in common is they are dressed and have speech patterns from the past.

These events lead to an adventure. Billy and Danny try to keep the magical Egyptian "coins" from the gangsters seeking to gain control of the United States. They are trying to keep the past intact and not have their existence wiped out from time.

Billy and Danny (Danielle) are cousins and next door neighbors.  They have a rocky relationship. I enjoyed the play of words and antics they throw back and forth.  They are more like siblings in the way the relate to one another.  They have a friend who is thrown in their adventures with them, his name is Wheezy.  They meed some interesting people in the 1920's.  The gangsters add an element of suspense and at times provide a bit of comedy.

This is a fun book for middle grade readers. It is perfect for it's target audience. I think that both boys and girls will find this book fun to read. It is engaging and full of imagination.

Review of "Trapped" by Michael Northrop

TrappedTrapped by Michael Northrop

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Purchased by me
Genre: YA Fiction

Description from Goodreads: The day the blizzard started, no one knew that it was going to keep snowing for a week. That for those in its path, it would become not just a matter of keeping warm, but of staying alive....
Scotty and his friends Pete and Jason are among the last seven kids at their high school waiting to get picked up that day, and they soon realize that no one is coming for them. Still, it doesn't seem so bad to spend the night at school, especially when distractingly hot Krista and Julie are sleeping just down the hall. But then the power goes out, then the heat. The pipes freeze, and the roof shudders. As the days add up, the snow piles higher, and the empty halls grow colder and darker, the mounting pressure forces a devastating decision....

My thoughts: I'm a sucker for survival books. I seem to love them. I keep reading them, and I think I may learn a little from each one.

Trapped is a worse scenario book. Seven teens are left in their high school when it was let out early due to blizzard conditions. The teens were all expecting a ride to come and get them, but the driving conditions did not support vehicle rescue.

As they begin to realize that no one is coming for them, survival mode kicks in. They start to think and plan for a longer stay at the High School. It could be worse, they could have been stuck in a car with no way out and food.

The teens are a mixture of teen society. Not all of them get along, but they do learn to have respect for each other. It was interesting to see the different dynamics clash and compliment each other.

I enjoyed the book. I wish there could have been an epilogue to let us know what happened with all of the other kids, the teacher who left and was never heard from. Did all of the buses make it when they took students home?

There are many unanswered questions. Leaving me not feeling quite complete at the end.

I read this as the first book in the challenge to read a book a month from my TBR pile.  This book has been sitting unread on my shelf for a long time.
