Paranormal Inspiration

For
as long as I can remember, I have loved reading and writing. I am drawn to all
kinds of books, everything from a good character-driven story to pure
fluff—anything that takes me to new and exciting places with intriguing new
friends.
My
first novel, Depression Cookies, was
women’s fiction. Then I got the paranormal bug. Where did I get the fever, you
might ask? I was first inspired by my thirteen-year-old daughter. She loves
everything paranormal. Initially, I wanted to pre-read all her book choices
(she’s my oldest, and I was on Mom-duty). So she handed me books like City of Bones and Beautiful Creatures. Soon, I was hooked.
But
what intrigued me most about paranormal books might surprise you. Both as a
reader and a writer, I love strong female and male characters. The more
paranormal books I read, the more I realized they are about more than just
ghouls and goblins, vampires, and werewolves. If you take normal teenage issues
and amp them up with a paranormal twist, you have some real material to work
with. The fear of fitting in, for example, is only heightened by adding the
fear of fitting in as a werewolf or vampire.
Plus,
the young adult paranormal genre gives my imagination room to soar. While there
is a need to stay true to certain folklore and legend, there’s still plenty of
room to create new twists and turns along the way.
At
the end of the day, all writers strive to create a world that readers want to
escape to, a world with captivating characters that stay with you way beyond
the last page.
