Eden by Keary Taylor
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: I purchased this book.
Genre: dystopian, apocalyptic, YA
Description from Goodreads: Eve knew the stories of the Fall, of a time before she wandered into the colony of Eden, unable to recall anything but her name. She's seen the aftermath of the technology that infused human DNA with cybernetic matter, able to grow new organs and limbs, how it evolved out of control. The machine took over and the soul vanished. A world quickly losing its humanity isn't just a story to her though. At eighteen, this world is Eve's reality.
In their Fallen world, love feels like a selfish luxury, but not understanding what it is makes it difficult to choose between West, who makes her feel alive but keeps too many secrets, and Avian, who has always been there for her, but is seven years her senior.
The technology wants to spread and it won't stop until there is no new flesh to assimilate. With only two percent of the human population left, mankind is on the brink of extinction. While fighting to keep Eden alive, Eve will discover that being human is about what you will do for those you love, not what your insides may be made of. And even if it gets you killed, love is always what separates them from the Fallen.
My thoughts: It's hard to imagine a world where humanity has been taken over by technology. This is the premise behind the book "Eden."
Eve is 18 years old and doesn't remember the past. She was found wandering by survivors from the fall of man. All she knows is the past five years that she has lived in Eden fighting to survive in a world where technology has overtaken mankind.
Before the fall, scientist discovered that they could use cybernetic matter to help people grow new limbs, or failing organs. It was the discovery that would improve the life of the sick and disabled. Unfortunately, when a thing is too good to be true, it really is. The cybernetics became a virus. It took over the human body, making it a machine and spread quickly by touch.
Eve protects those who are in Eden. She is faster and stronger than anyone else. Soon she discovers secrets from her past which are pretty intense secrets. They forever alter her perspective and how she lives life.
The secrets also lead to her trying to discover what love is and what it really means to be human. There is a love triangle in the book. One man ignites her zest for life and love and the other is part of her heart and soul. The questions for her is to discover where her heart truly lies.
This book caught and kept my attention. The world that they live in is fascinating. I enjoyed that Keary Taylor descried the world, but didn't dwell on it too much. It was a great blend of story and back story.
I finished this book on the last day of March as part of the challenge to read books that have been sitting on my too read shelf too long. It can't be a book that I have to review. I read this book solely because it interested me and I wanted to.

"The Galahad Legacy" - EXCERPT with a giveaway (US/Canada)
Triana shook her head. “No. White light. I know I screamed, and I think it was because of that extreme shift. I expected to plunge into total darkness, and instead was slammed with an almost violent white light. It was like I pierced a veil or something. As soon as that happened, I passed out.”
Lita stared at her before saying: “So you didn’t see anything, really, when you passed the boundary. A flash of light, and then...?”
“And then nothing. But...”

Review ~ "Tall, Dark, and Determined" by Kelly Eileen Hake
Tall, Dark, and Determined by Kelly Eileen Hake
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: This was my Christmas Present
Genre: Historical Christian Romance
Description from Goodreads: Welcome to Hope Falls where three enterprising young females are accepting applications for husbands-for-hire. With one woman already snagged, Lacey Lyman is one of only two remaining. No one really catches her eye until a handsome hunter arrives. Will Lacey find a way to bag her prey? Determined to investigate why Hope Falls’s mine collapsed, Chase Dunstan poses as a potential husband and a hunter, giving him the perfect excuse to poke around inside and outside of town. If only he could get the chatterbox Lacey Lyman off his trail. Can he keep his cover while solving the mystery of the mine?
My thoughts: The first few chapters are very confusing. They feel disjointed. I have read the first book, and the first chapters are to bring the reader up to speed on the previous events and prepare for this book. Honestly, skip them. They really don't help.
When you get to chapter four the book begins to take off and finally become a story.
Lacey is the second in the "Husbands for Hire" to find an attractive man. She doesn't want to be attracted to Chase. He is a rugged tracker/hunter/wilderness guide and not very sociable. He can be downright rude. Try as she might, she can't help the growing attraction she feels for him.
Chase didn't come to Hope Falls to find a bride. He came to find out the truth about his brother in law's death in a mine. He is seeking justice, his attraction for Lacey is more of a bother to him.
This book is about overcoming preconceived notions and opening your heart to the unexpected.
The romance doesn't happen until the end and as I was getting closer to the end, I kept wondering how the two of them would find it in their hearts to give each other a chance. The ending felt incomplete and rushed.
This is a fun book. I liked it. I liked the first one better though.

Blog Tour~ "Golden Blood" by Melissa Pearl ~ Interview & giveaway!
Melissa Peal is found here on this blog today answering a few questions about her book "Golden Blood". Julie at a Tale of Many Reviews has orchestrated this blog tour. Make sure that you check out the other posts that you will find a link to at the end of the post.
I found this to be a very unique story. Can you share with us the thought process in creating this book?
I initially got the idea from Twilight. I read those books and really wanted to write an intense love story with a magical element. I didn't want anything with vampires or angels or anything that had been done before... so I chose time travel. I love history and I thought it would be a fun way to visit different places and eras. I also wanted to turn the tables and have a physically strong and capable female character with an emotionally stable male character that could provide strength and courage.
So those were my initial thoughts. I also wanted to create these beings that could jump back and forth through time for short bursts rather than being stuck there like in The Outlander. The only other aspect I was sure about wanting was the idea of forbidden love. There is something very tantalizing about that.
Once I had those initial ideas brewing in the back of my brain, the story took on a life of its own. I liked the idea of making it a trilogy and I decided to make the first two books end with a cliff-hanger - so mean, I know.
After that came the themes of the stories - Hope, Betrayal and Sacrifice. Once I got those, it's like I'd doused my brain with gasoline and it lit with all these ideas. The stories took off from there.
Which writers have the most influence in your writing?
Francine Rivers and Dee Henderson were two writers I read in my late teens/early twenties. I loved their stuff so much. Their books know how to combine a tense, action packed story with a really indepth emotional journey. I like books that deal with relationships in a very real way and where characters show significant growth. I also love stories that are filled with romance, mystery and tension.
What books are on your bed stand right now?
Dead Radiance by T G Ayer, my bible, the proof copy of Black Blood, some NZ Romance Writer's Guild magazines and my Kindle.
The love story between Gemma and Harrison is very compelling. Are we going to be lucky enough to see more of them in future books?
Well, there's Black Blood and Pure Blood, of course :) But I actually have three more stories planned for them. Whether I write them or not is another story. If I get a huge fan base, begging for more, I will consider it, but for now I have some other stories I want to write.
What was your favorite part of the book to write?
For Golden Blood - I actually loved writing all of that book. Um - off the top of my head a few favourite scenes are... when Gemma and Harrison share their first kiss and basically all the stuff in medievil England. I had so much fun putting that together.
Why will readers want to read your book?
Golden Blood is a fast paced novel filled with mystery and a very intense love story. I have been told by many that it is a really easy read and very hard to put down. If you like teenage romance, forbidden love, mystery and a girl who knows how to kick a little butt, then you'll probably enjoy it.
My quick thoughts: This book falls into the paranormal/forbidden love story genre for me. Gemma and her family come from a line that is charged with changing the past to make things right and improve the future. They must keep this unique ability hidden.
Enter Harrison, the attraction between Harrison and Gemma is strong and undeniable. They cannot adhere to the edict that her kind cannot be with someone that is not one of them. The forbidden love story is always fun. I love to see love prevail against all odds. There are many odds going against them.
There is a lot of action in this book that will keep your eyes glued to the page. I gave it 4 stars and will definitely continue on with the rest of these books. I can't wait to see if love will prevail in the end.

Golden Blood was released in November 2011 and has been getting great reviews, along with Black Blood (Bk #2), which came out in December 2011. Pure Blood (Bk #3) is due for release in February 2012.
It has been a totally thrilling ride and I can't wait to keep putting my stuff out there.

Review of "New Girl" by Paige Harbison
New Girl by Paige Harbison
Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Source: ARC from Netgalley
Book Description:
A contemporary young-adult retelling inspired by the classic 1938 romantic suspense bestseller Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
They call me 'New Girl'...
Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.
Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy. And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.
Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend…but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. I wish it were that easy. Sometimes, when I think of Max, I can imagine how Becca’s life was so much better than mine could ever be.
And maybe she’s still out there, waiting to take it back.
Colleen's Thoughts:
Although I didn't realize it until after I read the book, this story is a fairly precise replica of du Maurier's Rebecca. I didn't read the book description before I read it, otherwise I would have already known. However, the more I thought about the book after reading it, the more I put the pieces together. The character's names and many of the situations greatly reflect the original story. I did not like the contemporary setting very well. The fact that the characters were teenagers in such "adult situations" was disturbing. This is most definitely not a book for younger teenagers, if for teenagers at all. The f-word is used profusely throughout. There are countless sexual situations that probably do happen in a boarding school atmosphere, but, it is uncomfortable and inappropriate for children to read about. I do not recommend reading this book. If you want know the story, go read Daphne du Maurier's original instead.

Goddess Interrupted by Aimee Carter (Goddess Test #2)

YA
Release Date: March 27th
Book Description:
WHAT IF IMMORTALITY ISN’ T FOREVER?
KATE WINTERS HAS WON IMMORTALITY.
BUT IF SHE WANTS A LIFE WITH HENRY IN THE UNDERWORLD, SHE’LL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.
Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.
As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of
Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the
help of the one
person who is the greatest threat to her future.
Henry’s first wife, Persephone.
Colleen's Thoughts:
I have really enjoyed this series. I love Greek mythology, and usually like any re-tellings I can find. This is the sequel to The Goddess Test and is a contemporary setting. I liked that the Greek gods had all chosen more contemporary names, and although there was a key to who was who in the back of the book, I liked trying to figure it out on my own.
Kate and Henry ended the first book with a blossoming relationship. However, this sequel sees their relationship run the gauntlet in order to prove they are meant to be together. There are some very frustrating scenes, and some very touching scenes. There are a couple of innuendos, but nothing overwhelmingly disturbing.
I loved it. However, the ending is a huge cliff-hanger! I cannot wait for the next book!

"Abby Finds Her Calling" review ~ Blog Tour
Abby Finds Her Calling: Home at Cedar Creek, Book One by Naomi King
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to review as part of the blog tour for Pump Up Your Book
Genre: Christian fiction
Book Description: Bad enough that Zanna abandoned James Graber and disgraced her family on her wedding day: older sister Abby Lambright is the one Zanna returns to, to reveal she’s pregnant. As speculation whirls around Cedar Creek, Zanna confesses and is shunned, yet refuses to reveal the identity of her child’s father. She spends her time at Abby’s little house making rag rugs, until finally—when Adah Ropp insists on knowing who disgraced Zanna, the Lambright family, as well as James and the Graber family–Zanna reveals that Adah’s own son, rebellious Jonny Ropp, is to blame. She can’t possibly marry Jonny because he’s left his family rather than be baptized into the Amish faith—not that he’ll ever settle down and marry anyone.
My thoughs: This is a very enjoyable book. I was intrigued by the Amish culture and the relationships of the diverse individuals in a small Amish community.
Abby is a peacemaker. She is one of those golden people who helps everyone around her see the positive side of situations. Abby has declared herself an old maid. She has found peace and contentment with her life, even though she didn't realize her hope and desire to marry James and have children. She is called on to help when her younger sister doesn't show up for her own wedding. Zanna is supposed to marry James.
The situation with her sister is very sticky. There is a good reason why Zanna ran away instead of getting married. Her reason turns the small community upside down and shows the real character of many people.
The book is about healing. It is about forgiveness and loving others in spite of their faults.
I think that Naomi King did a wonderful job at description and illustrating compassion in her book. Definitely a book worth reading.
The only thing that I wish I could have seen in the book is a happily ever after for Abby. I wanted James to fall in love with her and realize that she is the woman of his dreams. This is the first book, so maybe that will come later. One can only hope.

Review of "Spellcaster" by Cara Lynn Schultz
Spellcaster by Cara Lynn Schultz
Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley
Publication Date: March 27, 2012
Description from Goodreads:
Finding your eternal soul mate -- easy.
Stopping a true-love-hungry evil -- not so much...
After breaking a centuries-old romantic curse, Emma Connor is (almost) glad to get back to normal problems. Although...it’s not easy dealing with the jealous cliques and gossip that rule her exclusive Upper East Side prep, even for a sixteen-year-old newbie witch. Having the most-wanted boy in school as her eternal soul mate sure helps ease the pain—especially since wealthy, rocker-hot Brendan Salinger is very good at staying irresistibly close....
But something dark and hungry is using Emma’s and Brendan’s deepest fears to reveal damaging secrets and destroy their trust in each other. And Emma’s crash course in überspells may not be enough to keep them safe...or to stop an inhuman force bent on making their unsuspected power its own.
She’s found true love...but can she keep it?
Colleen's Thoughts: What a plot! A lot more magic this time - some very cool, but very gruesome scenes. I really liked how Brendan is the perfect Knight in Shining Armor. He protects her, he rescues her, he is intensely devoted to and in love with her.... the list goes on. We women melt at that kind of behavior. But, I also liked how Emma learned not only to stick up for others (she's done that throughout both of the books), but how she learned to stick up for herself - a skill many women, especially teenage girls, need to hone. So, in that respect, this book has a lot to teach YA readers. However, it is full of offensive swearing, violence, sex, etc. One thing I really appreciated though, Brendan never tried to coerce Emma into any compromising situations. Although things happened that I would never want my teenagers to be involved in before marriage, and despite Brendan's previous relationships, he and Emma never participated in premarital sex. I was grateful that the author wrote their relationship that way.

Strange and tragic things begin to happen in the small town of Hallowell, Maine: residents come down with an unexplainable ‘illness’ and some disappear. In the midst of everything, Isaac Mayfair is adamant about keeping Adria safe, even from her sister whom he has warned her to stay away from.
As unspeakable secrets unfold all around Adria, impossible choices become hers to bear. Ultimately, no matter what path she takes, her life and the lives of those she loves will be in peril. As she learns about the werewolf world she also learns why her place in it will change the destinies of many.
My thoughts: Adria and Alex are sisters who are bonded closely together. Their mother is more concerned with her drunkard husband and is too needy to be a mother. She is more of the child, and the girls are protective and take care of her.
One evening Adria and Alex are out for a walk when they happen upon werewolves fighting. This event drastically alters their lives. They are both banged up by the incident, and it is in this condition that DFS shows up at their door.
They are uprooted and shipped off to live with their uncle in Main. While family life is better, Alex is struggling and shuts herself off. She ends up leaving for a lifestyle that is less than ideal.
Adria is left to deal with everything. There are some things going on that are inexplicable. Teens disappearing and assumed dead, rampant sickness, etc. One of her friends live with a bunch of people that make her uncomfortable, but there is a really good looking guy in the group. Yup, here comes the love interest.
I liked the book. It kept me reading and anxiously turning the pages. At midnight I had to remind myself that I did have to get up in the morning and that it was really time to put the book down and turn out the light.
While the book is a fast and furious read, there are many parts that are predictable and follow the patterns of some of the paranormal books that have been previously published. J.A. Redmerski is able to keep her story unique though.
The book has resolution at the end, but it is not all pretty and tied up with a bow. She leaves room for the books that are to come in this trilogy, without the feeling of being left hanging. I personally really like that.
My content warnings: This book is fairly clean. There are violent situations and material that is for an older YA audience. There are situations that would be accepted in a wolf pack, but are not normal for humans. For example. some of the girls trying to get the attention of the alpha and those are in a sexual innuendo sort of way.

Teaser Tuesday
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!
Just do the following:~Grab your current read.
~Open to a random page.
~Share two "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page. (Sometimes I cheat a bit on this one and do a few more sentences.)
~Be careful not to include spoilers! (make sure that what you share doesn't give to much away. You don't want to ruin the book for others.)
~Share the title and author, so the other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teaser. :0)
Teaser Tuesday time! I haven't posted one in about a month. So, it's past time for me to participate in this MEME
My book this week is "Abby Finds Her Calling'" by Naomi King. I am reading an ARC, so pages may not match up in the final edition.
