Book Review ~ "Moonlit" by Jadie Jones

MoonlitMoonlit by Jadie Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Paranormal YA

Book Description: Eighteen-year-old Tanzy Hightower knows horses, has grown up with them on Wildwood Farm. She also knows not to venture beyond the trees that line the pasture. Things happen out there that cannot be explained. Or undone. Worse, no one but she and the horses can see what lurks in the shadows of the woods.

When a moonlit ride turns into a terrifying chase, Tanzy is left to question everything, from the freak accident that killed her father to the very blood in her veins. Broken and confused, she turns to Lucas, a scarred, beautiful stranger, and to Vanessa, a charming new friend who has everything Tanzy doesn’t.

But why do they seem to know more about her than she knows herself?

My thoughts:  Tanzy is facing an uncertain future. Her mother is having a nervous breakdown, her father passed away before the start of the book, and she has an accident that should have killed her.

Her accident changes her life drastically. She is a medical miracle and has piqued the interest of several people. Not all of them have her best interests at heart.

There is also a love interest. The romance was just enough to keep me interested, there wasn't too much or too little.

Jadie Jones has an excellent voice in the story. I kept turning the pages, wanting to find out the next secret to be revealed. She did a great job at the pacing.

I am looking forward to the next book to come out.

Blog Tour ~ "Journey of Promise" by Vickie Hall (Review/giveaway)

Journey of Promise by Vickie Hall
Source: Received to Review
Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Genre: Historical Fiction ~ LDS

Book Description: Journey of Promise When converts Richard and Leah Kenyon leave Wales and heed the call to Zion, they are unprepared for the toll exacted by the journey. To face the incredible odds mounted against them they call upon the Lord's tender mercies to see them through and strengthen their love for one another. Their story will remind you where to turn during your trials.

My thoughts:  It is hard to describe the thoughts and feelings that reading this book has brought me.  My Great Grandmother was an LDS immigrant from Cardiff, Wales.  She came from her homeland and journeyed to Salt Lake City, Utah around 1900.

I couldn't help but wonder if her family experienced similar types of persecution, even if their journey was approximately 50 years after the setting of this book.  I guess it proves that I have research of my own to do.

Vickie Hall has written a book that resonates with me.  I felt that I connected with the characters and understood their challenges as well as their successes. They felt real to me.

I enjoyed the story of a families diligence to their beliefs.  They had a great desire to do what they felt that the Savior wanted them to do and kept him and his teachings as a focal point in their lives and dealings with others.  They underwent many instances of brutal persecution.  It is amazing to me how well they managed and remained faithful.

This book is a great addition to the Historical Fiction in the LDS market.

Read an Excerpt:
********************
Leah peered inside the box of supplies and saw a chunk of beef infested with maggots. “Who would do this? And why?”

“We need that ham,” Claire said. “We have mouths to feed. What are we goin’ to do?”

Leah reached inside the box and snagged the meat in her bare hand. “I’m getting’ our ham back.”

“What are you—” Claire watched as her sister turned and stormed up the companionway.

Leah fumed all the way to the forecastle, to the captain’s quarters. She wasn’t about to let this assault on her family go without a fight. She raised her hand to knock on the captain’s door but was stopped by Franklin. “You can’t go in there,” he barked, barring the way.

“Mr. Franklin,” she said, her voice tinged with anger, “I need to see the captain.”

Franklin glowered as Leah. “The captain’s a busy man. What do you want?”

Leah shoved the spoiled maggot-filled meat toward his face. “Someone aboard ship stole our ham and left thisin its place! I want the captain to do somethin’ about it!”

Franklin lowered her arm with his hand, repulsed by the rancid beef. “The captain can do nothin’ about it,” he said. His eyes narrowed. “And for all I know, you might be lookin’ to trade this spoiled meat for someone’s ham you’d claim as your own.”

“How dare you accuse me of such a thing,” she said, stamping her foot. “I’ve come to have things made right and you treat me as if I’m the thief!”

Franklin smirked and clasped his hands behind his back. “See it however you want,” he said. “The captain won’t be disturbed over it. Maybe you should be thankful for what you have and eat it.”

This matter was beyond that of just stealing. It was a threat to her family’s condition—a deprivation of the food that cost them so dearly, the very nourishment they needed to survive the coming weeks. Leah’s anger exploded as she pushed the rotted meat into Franklin’s smug face. “You eat it!” She spun and charged off.

All That Was Promised In 1847 Wales Methodist Minister Richard Kenyon converts to Mormonism. Richard’s newfound faith is put to the test when he faces the anger of his former congregation, his wife’s indecisiveness, his brother’s betrayal, and the murderous intentions of misinformed villagers.

On Tour with Prism Book Tours...

Megan ThomasonWelcome to the "Second Chances" daynight blog tour! Over the last few day/nights I was really excited to share with you:

- Over $300 of daynight-related prizes as a giant THANK YOU to the thousands of daynight early adopters and those who have yet to enter the twisted world of The Second Chance Institute and Thera. Want to prepare for Exile? Or an overday date with Ethan? Have breakfast for dinner? Glam it up in Garden City? There are *12* prize packages to be won! We'll introduce a new package every day of the tour so you'll have a second, third & so forth chance to win.

- The launch of clean slate complex (a daynight story)... For those who have read daynight you can learn more about what the SCI is up to on Earth (surely nothing good). For those who haven't read daynight this is a great way to get your feet wet...test the waters so to speak. I warn you though...the SCI's like Jaws Jr and the giant school of barracuda I encountered on my recent vacation--pretty from a distance, but up close they've got a lot of bite ;).

- Posters, teasers and guest posts about the themes of daynight and clean slate complex... Plus, I'm fully prepared to sneak in some nuggets about what to expect in the daynight sequel, arbitrate.

Thanks again for joining us on the tour and for your support of daynight. I'm grateful for all of you and humbled by your support.

I don't necessarily think that the SCI is evil, even though I may believe that some of the things they do are. They have a reason for doing what they do, and I'm so thankful to Megan for daring to explain those "whys."

Brad: We want only the best for humanity. All you have to do is turn on the news on Earth to know that humanity’s been in a downward spiral. Someone’s got to step up and nip these issues in the bud. We get a glimpse of the characters from daynight in this novella and it definitely perked my interest in the next book to see how everything fits back together and intertwines.

clean slate complex was a fast read and it went very well after reading daynight. You know that feeling when you finish reading a good novel and you know you’re going to miss the characters and the world the author created so much until the next book comes out? Well, this novella is perfect for those who need their daynight fix.

There’s nothing like starting the morning with a little controversy, so let’s get a couple important things out of the way:

Many readers have mistaken all the Cleaving discussion for pushing sex. On the contrary, it is all about who you end up with for life.

Knowing that escaping won’t make the bad stuff go away, why do we do it? I think that the diversions and fantasies can give our brains enough of a “timeout” to be able to return back to our circumstances with renewed vigor and determination.

You never know who to trust. You honestly don't even know until the very end. Some of the characters, who will remain nameless, you still don't know their true intentions! I can't wait to read Thomason's next book, once it comes out. I'm just dying to know what happens to these characters, if who we think we can trust is really trustworthy... if the SCI has some other twisted objective.

Crossroads Saga Blog Tour - by Mary Ting

Crossroads by Mary Ting

Rating: 4 of 5 Stars
Source: I own this one!
Genre: YA Angels/Romance

Book Description:  ***Gold Medal READERS FAVORITE AWARDS WINNER 2012 for Young Adult-General***

Claudia Emerson has a good friend who shares the same first name and last name. That friend unfortunately dies in a tragic accident during homecoming dance. Claudia is distraught at the loss of her friend, but is even more disturbed by her dreams, which seem to take her to another place called Crossroads. Unknown to her, Crossroads is like a second heaven, a place between heaven and earth. It is where the souls of humans in comas or near death experiences may wander. Where, Claudia meets Michael, a nephilim, a half angel, half human, whom she often meets in her dreams. It turns out that this isn’t her first visit to Crossroads, which is an enigma for no human can ever travel there until Claudia.

Now the fallen and demons are after her, suspecting she must be special and it is up to Michael and the other nephilims to protect her. Her dream becomes a nightmare as more secrets are revealed, about who she really is, and the true identities of the people she loves most. Can Michael fight his growing feelings for Claudia and protect her as a guardian angel should?

My thoughts: I have wanted to read this book since I first saw it when it came out.  The synopsis drew me in and it has some great reviews from several of the bloggers that I follow.  I also have a huge fascination with nephilim and angels.

My only question is, why did I wait so long to read the book? That's the hard part of book blogging, not having time to read the books that I want to read for fun.

Claudia is caught in the conflict between the angels and the fallen.  She had the unique ability to go to the crossroads, a place in between Earth and Heaven.  She shouldn't be there.  She shouldn't know how to get there.  But night after night, her dreams take her there.  Her access to the crossroads puts her in jeopardy. She becomes a beacon that attracts the fallen.  Now, she must be assigned a guardian angel, Michael.  The one who has loved her from afar.  Love between them is forbidden.

I had fun reading this book.  There is action and romance.  Even though love is forbidden it doesn't stop Michael and Claudia's feelings for each other the steamy kisses that come with the feelings.  I enjoy Mary Ting's writing style.  It is straight forward and interesting.  She pulls the story together without getting sidetracked on side stories.

This is a series that I plan on following and reading.  Now I can, because she has two more books out and I don't have to wait for the next installment!

Between by Mary Ting: (Crossroads #2)

Book Description:  As the alkins head back to Crossroads, Claudia leads her normal life; but not for long. Having a special soul, Claudia attracts danger, and she soon finds out who Gamma asked to watch over her. The Twelve, known as Divine Elders on Earth, are very much involved when they find out that Aliah, one of the God's first angels, escaped from the Abyss when the gates were opened by Aden. Needing Claudia's soul to escape the only place Aliah can reside-a place between Heaven and Earth-he sends his demons in search of all Claudia Emersons on Earth. Taking her soul will enable him to be released from Between and cross over to Crossroads, which would give him immense power. As more secrets are revealed Claudia learns about the venators-nephilim, demon hunters. Now two opposing forces must work together in order to save Claudia and humanity from the most dangerous angel ever created. But along the way, trust becomes a big issue. Will love be enough to keep Claudia and Michael together? Who will make the ultimate sacrifice? Who will betray them all?

Beyond by Mary Ting (Crossroads #3)

Book Description:  Torn between the past she can't remember and a future she isn’t ready for, Claudia feels at a loss. With unanswered questions, she is certain there is more to her past than just being a venator. Finding the missing pieces in her life won’t be easy because duty calls. When mysterious dark shadows get released, an apocalypse sets in motion. The venators and the alkins must work together once again. Knowing Claudia would be the key to destroying the demons that were released, a familiar stranger appears to protect her. Drawn to the beautiful angel, Claudia finds she must unravel the mysteries of her past in order to help save the world. Who is the angel assisting her and why does she feel a strong connection to him? Time is running out. Will she discover all the secrets before it’s too late?

About Mary Ting: Mary Ting resides in Southern California with her husband and two children. She enjoys oil painting and making jewelry. Writing Crossroads was a way to grieve the death of her beloved grandmother. It was inspired by a dream she once had as a young girl.

Book Review ~ "Kiss Me, Curse Me" by Kate Shay

Kiss Me, Curse MeKiss Me, Curse Me by Kate Shay
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Paranormal

Book description: This is a story of a kiss--a simple kiss. . . and a boy. . . and a girl.

It's the Great Depression, but you would barely know it in Dam Town. The building of the great Carnee Dam has brought money, men, and mischief into an otherwise seemingly quiet desert community.

Ahanu is an outcast, born into a culture that despises him. He is Native American, of the land, a free spirit. If he wasn't in love with a girl that was already taken, maybe he could spend his days in the forest just as he pleases, but life isn't that simple.

Coreen is on a path to nowhere, dating the typical boy, and doing as her father always asks, or that's how it appears. On one moonlit night, her fate becomes entwined in an old curse unlocked by the boy of her dreams--true love--Ahanu.

This curse is old and it will have its way, it will do its damage

My thoughts: Coreen and Ahanu are a young couple in love. Unfortunately the live in a time when there was great prejudice against couples of different ethnic backgrounds.

Coreen sneaks away from her seemingly perfect life to meet Ahanu, when she is injured and fighting for her life and soul. An ancient curse has been unlocked that shakes their small town.

This story deals with many issues. It is not a light hearted story that can be read quickly and then forgotten. It covers many of mankinds hidden worlds: prejudice, prostitution, evil, dark magic, sacrifice, and murder.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who is not a mature reader.  There is swearing, violence,  and sexual innuendo.

She took creative writing in college for two years and has been writing for the last five years. She keeps a diary with her sad and romantic poems for when she's in the mood, usually it's after watching The English Patient--her favorite all-time movie.
Currently, she is writing Kiss Me, Save Me--the sequel to her new release and has plans for many more series.
