Sophia's Leap-Year Courtship by Kristin Holt (Blog Tour + giveaway)

Sophia's Leap-Year Courtship by Kristin HoltSophia's Leap-Year Courtship by Kristin Holt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received eBook to Review
Genre: Historical Fiction/Romance

Book Description:  Union Pacific Station Agent Chadwick Hughes has everything in a state of readiness to welcome his mail order bride…everything but the bride. The woman he’s corresponded with for a year didn’t change her mind or miss her train in Omaha—she never existed. Chadwick’s mortified to discover he’s been swindled by a fraudulent matrimonial agency in Chicago. He needs a lawyer if he’ll ever recover a dime of the fortune he spent on worthless membership fees and the nonexistent bride’s transportation west.

Sophia Sorensen, Attorney at Law, is a spinster on the edge of propriety. The good people of Wyoming Territory are open to a lot of things, including Lady’s Privilege during Leap Years, but some aren’t fond of her day-to-day behavior. Why, the woman rides her bicycle hither and yon, showing her petticoat ruffle and ankles. She might be the least ladylike specimen beneath Wyoming skies, but it’s entertaining to watch her court the U.P. Station Agent, Chadwick Hughes, the most-eligible bachelor in the county.

My Thoughts: This is such a cute story with a strong, feisty heroine. Sophia is a lawyer in the late 1800's in Wyoming. This is not a popular career choice for the time. Many men will not hire her and many more think her incompetent because she is a woman. She doesn't consider marriage until the local gossip columnists suggests she would be taken more seriously if there were a man to control her a bit.

The idea of women doing the courting in Leap Year was new to me. I do not know if it were something that really happened or the author's idea for the telling of this story. Regardless of where it came from, it's a great idea. Women who have been looked over can make a connection with a man who may be a little too shy to make the first move. It's a win, win.

This is a delightfully clean addition story. There is some kissing and some wooing.  This is also not a full length novel.

The images for Condemn Me Not by Heather B Moore are stunning.

The Salem Witch Trials are a time that fascinate me.  I often wonder what made neighbor and friend turn on each other?  This story is about an ancestor of Heather B. Moore.  Did you know that the model for the images are Heather's daughter?  To me this makes the story, the images, and the feeling more personal.

The book will be released on March 14th, but you can pre-order the book today.

The Rise of Miss Notley Book Blast! (with a giveaway)

the-rise-of-miss-notley-gr

The Rise of Miss Notley by Rachael Anderson When Miss Coralynn Notley’s father barters her off to the first titled gentleman to come along, she realizes she must flee her home or be forced to wed a despicable man. Driven by desperation, she applies for the position of housekeeper at Tanglewood Manor, the home of the handsome Mr. Jonathan Ludlow. The moment Jonathan sees Miss Notley, he is intrigued. She is far too young and inexperienced, yet there is something about her that that inspires a certain hope within him. Does he dare offer her the position of housekeeper or will doing so result in catastrophe?

Read an  Excerpt

********************
Cora nodded and followed Mr. Ludlow into the parlor. He closed the doors and stood in front of them with his arms folded, looking far more intimidating than he had during their last meeting. He said nothing, merely lifted an inquiring eyebrow and waited.

Caught unprepared, Cora stared at him, trying to organize her thoughts into words. After a few moments of awkward silence, he lost patience. "What is it you wished to speak with me about, Mrs. Notley? Or are we to stand here staring at each other all afternoon?"

Not knowing how else to begin, Cora blurted, "Why have you hired me, sir?"

He blinked a few times before frowning. "I believe I have made that perfectly clear. You are to be the housekeeper, are you not?" This was going to be more difficult than she had imagined. "Yes, of course, but there has been some talk about, or rather concerns expressed . . ." How did one put this delicately?

"About . . .?" he prodded, obviously not thrilled that his morning regime had been waylaid.

"About the reasons I have been offered the position," she quickly said, hoping that would be enough to make him understand her meaning. Unfortunately, his brows drew together in confusion. "What are you saying, Mrs. Notley? I have hired you to do certain duties that will hopefully make my household run more smoothly. What other reason could I possibly have for offering you the position?"

"You have hired me to do a job I am untrained to do," she said. "While I am grateful for the opportunity, I also find it necessary to clarify that I have come here to be a housekeeper and only a housekeeper. Even though I am young and . . ." Her voice drifted off. Had she almost referred to herself as pretty? Goodness, this was proving to be very awkward indeed.

"Beautiful?" he finally guessed, not looking at all pleased with the direction the conversation was taking.

"I was going to say not repulsive," she fibbed.

"Very well," he said. "Even though you are young and not repulsive . . ." He moved his hand in a circular gesture, urging her to finish her thought.

Cora straightened her shoulders and forced herself to continue. "I am not the sort of girl who would ever . . . fraternize with her employer." Her face infused with heat, but she forced her gaze to remain steady.

"I see." He walked slowly towards her, rubbing his chin with his hand. A few steps away, he stopped and eyed her quizzically. "Have I made any improper advances towards you?"

"No, sir."

"Have I spoken to you in an unprofessional manner?"

"No."

"Have I looked at you in a way that has made you feel uncomfortable?"

"No." Cora suddenly wished she had not felt the need to clarify anything. He made her feel as though she had put the cart before the horse when what she had been trying to do was see that the cart and horse simply stayed in their proper places. Was that so wrong?

"Might I ask who, exactly, has led you to believe that I am the sort of man capable of—how did you put it? Fraternizing with my help?"

"I, er, would rather not say, sir." Though Cora felt no loyalty towards Sally, she refused to bring Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd's names into the conversation. "I did not mean to besmirch your name or cause any offense, Mr. Ludlow. I merely wanted to make my feelings on the matter clear."

"And you have."

"Good." Cora dropped into a quick curtsy, anxious to get away. "I shall go and find Watts now."

She was almost to the door when his voice stopped her. "Once again, you are attempting to scuttle away before we have completed our conversation."

Slowly, she turned around and lifted her eyes to his. "I never scuttle, sir."

"What would you call that rapid walk of yours?"

 "A rapid walk."

One Fell Down by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen (Blog Tour + Giveaway)

One Fell Down by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen
One Fell Down by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from Publisher to Review
Genre: Romance/Suspense

Book Description:  When Mikaela York opens an anonymous blue sympathy card with the nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill” written inside, she doesn’t know what to make of it. But soon after, Mikaela and her fiancé are in a tragic car accident, resulting in her husband-to-be’s death. Then when Mikaela’s grandmother loses her life in a hiking accident one year later, an old man gives Mikaela another mysterious blue card at the funeral. After the service, Mikaela’s grandfather asks that she oversee the renovations on his bed & breakfast in New Zealand. When she arrives, Mikaela meets Tui Davies—the inn’s manager—and Brentin Williams, the man Tui expects her daughter to marry. Tui helps Mikaela retrieve a doll from the cellar vault, but the doll turns out to be an evil omen that Mikaela is told she must get rid of before someone is murdered. Meanwhile, the old man from the funeral is bent on revenge and is plotting against everyone who has ever wronged him, and Mikaela is next in line. But until she discovers the killer’s contact in New Zealand, whom can she trust? And while Brentin attempts to help Mikaela overcome her grief, she must decide—is she ready to love again?

My thoughts: For a book that is only 255 pages in length, it really pops a punch and grabs the readers attention. The book is full of suspense almost from page one.

The book opens as Mikaela and her fiancee are leaving school to visit her grandparents. Unfortunately, there was a terrible "accident" and Trevor was killed, leaving Mikaela alive an hurting. The book then fast forwards to a year later, this time it is Mikaela's grandmother who had a hiking "accident" and passes away. Mikaela and her grandfather do not connect the cryptic nursery rhymes at first indicating that maybe they weren't accidents after all.

Of course, the reader is very aware of the events, because Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen also writes from the murderer's point of view. We know that there are more deaths planned as he tries to seek revenge.

The book gallops at a quick pace and keeps the reader invested in the story. There isn't word skipping or reading ahead. (Yes, I am guilty of those infractions from time to time.)

The romance is sweet. The focus of the books is on the suspense aspects and solving who is behind the deaths. This is a clean book with some violence.

Dragonkyn by Nathan Smith Jones - Blog Tour

Dragonkyn by Nathan Smith Jones
Dragonkyn by Nathan Smith Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received eBook from publisher to review.
Genre:  Tween/Middle Grade Fantasy

Book Description:  Marc Mondragon is your average teenager: always getting into trouble, crushing on the pretty girl in school. But when strange things begin happening to his body, Marc is thrust into a new world where dragons are no longer just fairytales. Now knowing he’s part dragon, Marc joins a group of Dragonkyn who call themselves Sorceron. As Marc discovers new powers within himself, he starts to wonder how much he can really trust his fellow Dragonkyn. After the leader of Sorceron orders the rest of the group to kill Marc, he flees. But when he discovers that people are going to attack the Sorceron, Marc is faced with a dilemma. Will he try to help the Dragonkyn who tried to kill him?

My thoughts: To be a boy going through puberty is a hard enough, to add dragon ability growing pains makes it much more difficult.

Marc is teen living on the poor side of town. It's just him and his mom. He is chased by the local police man, just because he can, and he has few close friends. Then he begins to have sore throats where he belches fire, sever acne, nodules on his shoulders, and intense pain. Life went from bad to worse in a short period of time.

Turns out Marc has dragon DNA.  There are men out to kill him, but he has some amazing powers.  He turns out to be part dragon with compassion.  Marc is a cool kid.

This is a fun book for the tween reader. It has action and adventure, plus dragons. Because dragons are cool and a huge drawing point for boys. This book may be something for the reluctant reader to check out, there is sure to be something that will make them want to continue reading.

The book contains violence.

All By My Selfie by Jo Noelle (FREE EBook)

All By My SelfieAll By My Selfie by Jo Noelle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Free on Kindle
Genre: Comporary, Historical, Fiction, Romance

Book Description:  While on vacation at McLeod Castle in Scotland, Gwen Mackenzie has nightly dreams of an ancient warrior bound by a curse. During the day, she sees Niall, nicknamed #ScottishBoyfriend. Oh, and can that man rock a kilt! As she gets to know him, she realizes that Niall is the warrior from her dreams, cursed to live as a ghost for the past five hundred years, to see life around him but never sense any of it—except Gwen.

Niall McLeod has been a prisoner, a ghost, for centuries. When he meets Gwen, he wonders if she is the key to releasing him, but Niall’s quest for freedom may cost Gwen her life.

This novella is in the Clean & Wholesome category.

My thoughts: This book is a mash up of a few genres. You have ancient druids, scenes from Scotland 500 years ago, witchcraft, contemporary, ghost (ish), and romance.

All By My Selfie is a novella. There isn't a lot of character development, but I did enjoy them. It is a short and sweet story about breaking an ancient curse and falling in love in the process. It was written well and has great pacing.

I "purchased" it from Kindle for #FREE. There is  some violence depicted in the Ancient Scotland scenes.

It's still FREE on Kindle and on Nook

Breach of Trust by Kathi Oram Peterson ( Blog Tour with Giveaway)

Breach of Trust by Kathi Oram PetersonBreach of Trust by Kathi Oram Peterson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from publisher to review
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Description:  Lieutenant Commander Cooper Lane has so much to live for. With a loving husband and beautiful baby girl waiting for her back home, she is anxious to finish her mission in Afghanistan and return to her family. But in a split second, her world shatters. Her helicopter is going down in that hostile country, and there will be no survivors. Four Years Later . . . On a covert mission in an Afghan village, Navy SEAL Axe Talbot finds something no one ever expected: Lieutenant Cooper Lane—alive. Cooper survived the crash that killed her team and has been hiding behind enemy lines for four years. It’s the woman he’s been looking for and dreaming about for so long. After her rescue, Cooper is not sure she can survive the reality waiting for her back home—when she disappeared and was pronounced dead, her husband married her best friend. Cooper is lost, but her troubles are just beginning. In one horror-filled moment, her former husband is murdered before her eyes, and Cooper becomes the prime suspect. Now she must embark on one last mission to clear her name. And there are only two people she trusts to help her: her father and Axe, the SEAL who rescued her. Cooper and Axe take off, and together the makeshift team uncovers a trail of mysterious deaths that leads to unimaginable danger

My thoughtsBreach of Trust is the third book of Kathi Oram Peterson's that I have read and I have enjoyed every one of them. She does a fantastic job of laying out the story and providing plausible suspense.

This book is about Cooper Lane, her helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan and she spent four years behind enemy lines. She left a husband and baby behind. She never considered the possiblitly that when she was rescued that he would be married to someone else. Now, her husband has been murdered and she is the prime suspect. The Navy SEAL who rescued her from Afghanistan is now back to help rescue her from a murder charge.

From the beginning of the book there is action. I loved seeing the emotional side of the story that was shared between Copper and Axe while on the run. There was a lot of emotion in this book. Copper is suffering from PTSD. She has flashbacks whenever key words are mentioned. Her story is brought to light piece by piece. The relevant facts are revealed when I appreciated them the most.

This is a great suspense story with a some romance. I was wondering up until the bad guys were. The book has references to religion, but I didn't find it to be preachy, just a straight foward part of the story. There is violence and kissing.

The Outlaw's Secret Tour Grand Finale

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
The Outlaw's Secret
By Stacy Henrie

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out...

Launch - Note from the Author

I’m so excited to introduce readers to the Becketts brothers—one a lawman, the other an outlaw—in my next two books releasing from Love Inspired Historical. In THE OUTLAW’S SECRET, you’ll meet Tate Beckett, a Pinkerton detective posing as his outlaw twin brother Tex. You’ll also meet Essie Vanderfair, a dime novelist in need of a great story. And she hopes to find it when she begs to go along with the gang of train robbers that Tate has infiltrated. These opposites-attract characters were so much fun to write as were the outlaws Essie meets and interviews.

Bookworm Lisa - Review

"There were several instances that brought a smile to my face and I wanted how to know they were going to get out of the mess they were in. This is a fun book that is set in the "Old West". There are outlaws, lawmen, and a feisty heroine."

Rockin' Book Reviews - Review & Interview

"This was a fun book. The characters were likable and flawed just enough."

Q: What other genre, one day, would you like to write? Why or why not?

A: Though I’ve tried my hand at writing contemporary, I enjoy writing historicals much more. I’ve also dabbled with the idea of writing historical women’s fiction, but I love a good love story so I don’t know that I could pull off writing something without having a romance at its heart.

"I love a romance that makes me swoon and this one does just that. Not only are the romance and characters well done, the setting is fantastic too. I felt myself transported back to the late 1800s and loved being a part of that time--when I wasn't shivering in my boots with fear. I also really enjoyed Essie's writing moments, which are often thoughts--she's an interesting character with a vivid imagination and has me engrossed in her ideas. I'm definitely looking forward to what this author writes next!"

Hearts & Scribbles - Meet Tate and Essie

Born and raised in Idaho, Tate Beckett is an identical twin. But his brown hair and blue eyes are about the only thing he shares with his brother Tex. Tate’s brother is the infamous outlaw known as the Texas Titan and Tate feels duty-bound to atone for his brother’s crimes by tracking down other outlaws in his job as a Pinkerton detective agent...

"The Outlaw’s Secret has it all – action, adventure, romance, humor, faith and depth. It will make you smile and it will twist your heart too. It will make you hold your breath – for the kisses and again for the nail-biting action. Essie is such a fun heroine, and Tate is most definitely swoonworthy. Another fun and sweet novel by Stacy Henrie that I highly recommend!"

I Am A Reader - Undisguised: the Pinkerton National Detective Agency

While operatives were required to abide by a code of ethics—including things like not accepting reward money and working with local law enforcement—Allen Pinkerton was a staunch believer in the end justifying the means. That meant that sometimes in order for an operative to track down a criminal, the detective might have to “become” a criminal in a sense—just as Tate does by posing as his outlaw twin brother in order do to bring down the Fletcher gang.

"There’s nothing typical about Stacy Henrie’s newest release and she has become one of my favorite writers in the Love Inspired line. The Outlaw’s Secret has it all – character depth, humor, romance, suspense, and rich historical detail. It’s well written, entertaining, and refreshingly unusual in storyline."

"On the romance side, it's fun to watch Tate/Tex and Essie dance around each other, both mistrusting in turn and each fiercely determined to follow their own goals. Their journey includes moments of danger, threats to budding feelings, and a few twists."

Kathleen Denly - Interview

Q: As an author, I often get asked how much of myself I put into my characters. So I’m curious, if you were on that train instead of Essie, how would you handle the situation?

A: I would’ve been terrified! And unlike Essie, I would have chosen to stay seated and silent and hopefully unseen.

"This was such a fun adventure. The story started off with a bang and took off from there. I settled right in and enjoyed the ride!"

Wishful Endings - Excerpt

Tate Beckett’s jaw was clenched so tight he thought it might snap. Of all the rotten misfortune. He had to run into a nosy, busybody like Miss Essie Vanderfair on his first job with Fletcher’s gang. If he wasn’t careful, this woman, with all her probing questions, would figure out he wasn’t the Texas Titan after all. Then his covert work, posing as his outlaw twin brother, would be finished.

Mel's Shelves - Review

"Once I started reading this book, I settled in and didn't want to put it down. It moves at a fast pace and there was never a dull moment. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good, clean western romance!"

Falling Leaves - Excerpt

Fletcher’s mouth curled up in a sneer. “Try me, Tex.” He lifted his hands in a mock gesture of innocence. “But now your life is tied with hers.” He walked away, adding over his shoulder, “I think you’re smart enough to figure out what that means.”

"Stacie Henry has masterfully written a story that readers will be enthralled with from page one until the very end. This is a fairly quick and easy read that will inspire the romance in all of us! Henry has a distinct way of writing that will draw readers in as they leave the world of reality behind and enter the enjoyable and entertaining world of the Wild West."

Colorimetry - Excerpt

Sure enough she spotted the impression of horse hooves in the dirt and a partially trampled sagebrush farther on. If she kept heading in that same direction, she would eventually stumble into the trio.

She bent forward over the horse and coaxed it to go faster. There were interviews to conduct. And no one, not even a handsome, sly, back-stabbing Texan, was going to stop her.

Q: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans or readers?

A: Thanks for your support! I’m excited to share Tate and Essie’s story with you. If you read it and enjoy it, then look for Tex’s story in July, when you’ll find out where the Texas Titan was while Tate was impersonating him to take down Fletcher’s gang.

"The Outlaw's Secret delivers humor, romance, faith, and some wonderfully exciting moments where death is only a step away from both hero and heroine. . . . Fans of Stacy Henrie and of western historicals will surely not be disappointed in the thrilling pages. . ."

Heidi Reads... - Review

"I was glued to the pages to find out when Essie would discover Tate's secret, when they would give in to the chemistry building between them, and if the real Tex would make an appearance. Another great western from Stacy Henrie with suspense, action, and romance!"

Her heart beat faster as she opened her mouth and said, “Call me Essie. It’s only fair.”

A low chuckle sounded in her ears. “Try to get some sleep, Essie. We’ve got another long ride tomorrow.”

Smiling in triumph, she closed her eyes, but it was still some time later before she could turn her thoughts from the silent figure guarding the camp. And from the memory of her name on those nice, masculine lips.

Lawman in Disguise

Getting taken hostage by a gang of train robbers wasn't in dime novelist Essie Vanderfair's plans, but interviewing these men could make her career soar. Especially since the gang includes legendary outlaw Tex Beckett, better known as the Texas Titan. Tex is famed for his protection of women and children, so she'll be fine…right?

Keeping the gang in line was hard enough before a stubborn, beautiful writer interfered. Now Tex is scrambling to keep Essie safe, to gather evidence against the gang and most of all to hide his dangerous secrets. First, that he's a detective working undercover. And second, that he's not the Texas Titan at all, but Tex's twin brother, Tate Beckett.
