Review of "Scary School" by Derek the Ghost

Scary SchoolScary School by Derek The Ghost

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received from the author to review
Genre: Middle grade fantasy/paranormal

Description from Goodreads: You think your school's scary?
Get a load of these teachers:
"Ms. Fang," an 850-year-old vampire
"Dr. Dragonbreath," who just might eat you before recess
"Mr. Snakeskin"--science class is so much more fun when it's taught by someone who's half zombie
"Mrs. T"--break the rules and spend your detention with a hungry "Tyrannosaurus rex"
Plus
Gargoyles, goblins, and Frankenstein's monster on the loose
The world's most frighteningly delicious school lunch
And
The narrator's an eleven-year-old ghost
Join Charles "New Kid" Nukid as he makes some very Scary friends--including Petunia, Johnny, and Peter the Wolf--and figures out that Scary School can be just as funny as it is spooky.

My thoughts:  For any middle grader reader who loves: ghosts, vampires, zombies, dragons, and monsters, this is the perfect book for them.

Derek the Ghost had an unfortunate incident at Scary School. He spends his days watching what is going on at the school. The student body is made up of both humans and monsters. The teachers are all monsters. The thought behind letting humans into the school is you will learn better and be more motivated to excel if you are afraid to loose a limb or your life by getting an answer wrong.

Derek describes the student body and their stories. He lets the reader know what is unique about the individuals. He even tells stories about the teachers. Some of the chapters lean to the gross side.

The story culminates with the Ghoul Games. Scary School gets to host other schools of monsters in the games. The students get to decide what contest they want to be involved in and they will be matched by monsters. If you loose a game, the victor gets to eat you.

Getting to know the students was very interesting and fun. Despite their individual problems, they are very good kids.

For an eleven year old ghost, I would say that Derek is a pretty good author. :)

There is a website for this book.  The second installment of this series comes out in June. Go to http://www.scaryschool.com/.
