Book Review ~ "Professional Boundaries" by Jennifer Peel

Professional Boundaries by Jennifer Peel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source; Received from the author to review.
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Description:  At thirty two, Kelli Bryant is ready to take on the world, and Chandler Media, as the new Marketing Director, but her plans are derailed when her promotion is given to none other than Ian Greyson, Kelli’s old college flame, her one true love and the one man she hoped to never see again.

Between Kelli’s determination to remain on top and Ian’s strict new office policies, there’s no shortage of fireworks in the office. Their explosive relationship spills over into their personal lives as Kelli tries to keep Ian at arm’s length and Ian desperately tries to win her back (during off hours only, of course).

Professional Boundaries is a clean romance filled with fun and humor. It is a story of two professionals who just can't keep it professional.

My thoughts: Kelly and Ian were separated years ago by pride, misunderstanding, and unfulfilled expectations.

Thirteen years is a long time to go without seeing the man that you loved in college. It's a long time to let go of bitterness and hurt feelings. All of the old emotions crash down around Kelly when he unexpectedly shows up in her workplace, taking the promotion that she was trying to get.

The fine line that the two of them walk is comical. You can tell right from the start that there are many unresolved issues that need to be worked through to make it a tolerable environment for both of them. There were many moments that had me giggling and grateful that I wasn't in that situation!

This is a cute and clean read for lovers of contemporary romance. There is kissing, but that's where it ends.

About the Author: (Taken from Goodreads) I'm a fifth generation Colorado native who currently calls Alabama home. I'm the mother of three amazing children who have grown up way too fast. I enjoy the mountains, vacations at the beach, date night with my wonderful husband, late night talks with my kiddos, touring model homes, and pink bubblegum ice cream.

I grew up on the Western Slope in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. I learned to love the beauty of the outdoors, but not camping--unless staying overnight at the Marriott counts. I met my husband while living in Denver and then several years later we traded the beauty and majesty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains for the art and culture of Chicago, Illinois. My family and I enjoyed living near this world class city, despite the crazy cold winters, but new adventures awaited in Northern Alabama--just six hours away from Orange Beach, Alabama. These three magical places (the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Chicago, and Orange Beach) are the inspire
d locations used in several of my books.

Blog Tour ~ "Miss Burton Unmasks a Prince" by Jennifer Moore + tour giveaway

Miss Burton Unmasks a Prince by Jennifer Moore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received from Covenant to Review
Genre: Regency Romance

Book Description:  1812
Southern belle Meg Burton is her parents’ last hope of avoiding financial ruin, and a distant cousin’s kind gesture seems an ideal solution: he will sponsor Meg for a London Season. The pursuit of a wealthy husband was not exactly how the bookish young woman had envisioned her first trip abroad—after all, what does a girl from Charleston, South Carolina, know about being a lady? Amidst the stunning gowns and extravagant balls of the ton, Meg feels like an imposter. Thankfully, she has one friend who knows her true self—Carlo, a handsome stable hand. Despite their difference in station, love blossoms between the unlikely pair, and Meg is sure of one thing: she wants nothing to do with the insufferable European aristocracy.
Prince Rodrigo de Talavera has lost everything to Napoleon. Jaded by war, he has become bitter and miserable—until he meets Meg, an American woman whose eccentric schemes and passion for life remind him what it is to laugh and to love. If only she knew him for himself and not as Carlo the stable hand. With the shadow of deception looming over their happy acquaintance and the dangers of war drawing ever more near, can Meg and Rodrigo find the courage to put aside their pretenses and discover if they can be loved as they truly are?

My thoughts: Meg Burton is a young lady raised in the "wilds" of America. She is not socially refined, but many overlook her many faults because she is from Charleston.

Meg struggles to draw the line between her true character and the facade placed upon her. She would rather read novels and poetry then play the pianoforte. She would prefer to ride a horse than take a carriage ride around the park. Her friend Carlo understands all of this and encourages her to be herself and not stifled by society. What Meg doesn't know is that Carlo is really a Spanish Prince seeking refuge in England from the French who have overrun his homeland.

This book is so incredibly cute. I loved Meg's sense of adventure and the fun that she brought back to Carlo/Rodrigo's life. Their relationship is a friendship that blossoms. I loved that it wasn't insta-love, but friends finding their way together.

Another plus for me in this book is that I was able to re-connect with characters from Lady Emma's Campaign. This book is a companion and can be read as a stand alone novel.

This book contains a little kissing, sword fights (both mock and real), treasure maps, adventure, and a kidnapping.

Book Review ~ "Entwined" by Heather Dixon

Entwined by Heather Dixon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source:  Purchased by Me
Genre: Fairy Tale Re-telling

Book Description:  Just when Azalea should feel that everything is before her—beautiful gowns, dashing suitors, balls filled with dancing—it's taken away. All of it. And Azalea is trapped. The Keeper understands. He's trapped, too, held for centuries within the walls of the palace. So he extends an invitation

My thoughts: A couple of years ago I checked out the audio version of this book from my local library. I was in the middle of Spring deep cleaning and I thought I could multi-task, read a book and clean. Turns out that I am not a good multi-tasker. I did hear enough that I knew this was a book that I wanted to hold in my hands and read. I immediately purchased a copy and let it sit on my shelf for far too long.

Azalea is the eldest of the 12 dancing princesses. At the beginning of the book, her mother passes away just after giving birth to baby Lily. Her mother has her take an oath to watch over and protect her sisters.

Life in mourning is not fun for princesses who just want to dance. The perfect place is found in a magic tunnel leading to a land of silver and dancing. It doesn't take long for the princesses to realize that their perfect place isn't as lovely as it appeared. There is something off about "the Keeper", the man who controls the dance.

Azalea's oath takes on new dimensions and meanings as she is left alone to care for her sister's while her father is at war. The father she said goodbye to by telling him that he doesn't care for her or her sisters. The Father who she doesn't have a good relationship with.

The characters and language in the book are fun. I loved reading words like "corking". The sister's personalities are so different and complimentary. They love and respect each other and are able to tease and have fun together.

The gentlemen are very different as well. Lord Teddie is very odd, but lovable and hilarious. "The Keeper" changes as he slowly reveals his true character. He was intriguing. He kept the girls guessing as he told them tidbits of his past, slowly letting them know who he is.

I'm glad that I finally read this book. It was worth the wait.  It was a clean read that fairy-tale lovers of all ages would enjoy.

"A Heart Revealed" by Josi S Kilpack

A Heart Revealed by Josi S. Kilpack
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Regency Romance

Book Description:  Amber Marie Sterlington, the Rage of the Season in Regency-era London, has her pick of men, and she knows what she wants most in a husband: a title and a fortune. Why would she ever marry for something as fickle as love? And why would she ever look twice at Thomas Richards, a third son of a country lord?

But when Amber's social standing is threatened, the character of her future husband becomes far more important than his position. After a public humiliation, she finds herself exiled to Yorkshire. Alone except for her maid, Amber is faced with a future she never expected in a circumstance far below what she has known all her life. Humbled and lonely, Amber begins to wonder if isolation is for the best. Who could ever love her now?

My thoughts: Sometimes it takes extreme circumstances for a person to change for the better.

Amber Sterlington is the bell of the London Season. She turns all heads when she walks into the room. Men flock to her. She knows she is beautiful and knows how to use it to her advantage.

The unthinkable happens and she is disgraced, sent into exile, and humbled.

Thomas Richards is an exceptional man. He is pulled to Amber whenever he hears the sound of her voice. He tries to stay away, even when she publicly embarrasses him. In her time of greatest trial, he is the only one who extends kindness.

This book is not a typical regency romance. Balls and the antics of the ton are found at the beginning of the book, but then it takes a huge turn. The book takes a closer look at the condition of the human heart. It looks at how a person can change and see their faults.

The book follows both Amber and Thomas. Most of the book they are not in the same room. Instead the book looks at societies emphasis on the outward appearance of a person and social expectations. It also looks at family ties. Amber learns that to be wealthy doesn't bring happiness.

I really enjoyed this book. If you read it, don't expect for the romance to be typical regency. Expect something a little more.

Blog Tour ~ "Between Now and Never' by Laura Johnston + tour giveaway

Between Now & Never

Between now and neverBetween Now & Never by Laura Johnston
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley
Genre: Contemporary YA Romance

Book Description:  Buh boom, buh boom. My heart thrusts with a force that takes me by surprise. Telling me something I don’t understand. A splitting pain, a longing to slip back under. They tell me I was in a hit-and-run, but I can’t remember what happened that night. All I know is that I woke up with pictures in my pocket, a card from one of those photo booths in the mall. And I’m in the pictures. Cody Rush. Me and… Julianna. Her brother was there that night, and my dad, the FBI agent, was the one who put her mom behind bars. What’s the connection? And why won’t Julianna talk to me now? Somehow, she holds the key to it all, and getting close–real close—to her for the answers I need will be no hardship at all…

My thoughts: Two young adults who are so wrong for each other make everything right.

Cody and Julianna share a few things in common. His father was the FBI agent who put her mother behind bars. They met on the night that Cody was hit by a car and lost his memory. Julianna's brother Vic is a key to unlocking his memory and their confusion of events happening around them and to them.

There are so many odds stacked against them as a couple, but neither can deny their budding attraction and easy friendship.

I found myself easily caught up in this YA novel full of suspense and romance. Laura Johnson was able to give enough details to keep me interested and invested in the story and the characters. She was able to drop enough hints that I knew what was happening and anxiously awaited the characters to realize what was going on.

I loved that the book looked at families. They both came from very different family structures, but the overall theme was of love in a family. Choices were made by family members that were devastating, but there was love.

The book takes a look at right and wrong. The idea that people can and will make mistakes takes center stage. It how one deals with the mistakes that show true character. Lots of great characters in the book.

The book has kissing, some violence, and deals with drug addiction and it's effects and consequences.

Dinner Conversation Gone Wrong
CODY
“So, Julianna . . .” I say at the dinner table forty-five minutes later, “the girl who tutors me—”

“She’s purty,” Lizzy says with a mouth full of mashed potatoes. “Can I have some chocolate milk, Mom?”

“You’ve got a tutor?” Dad asks, his forehead gathering up over a confused stare. “Since when do you need a tutor?”

“He needs help in art, honey,” Mom cuts in with a light whack on his arm. “There’s no shame in that. Rachel, take out your earbuds.”

Rachel doesn’t hear. It’s almost six o’clock and Julianna still hasn’t woken up. She’s been asleep upstairs for over an hour and a half. I’ve checked on her several times, wondering if I should wake her. Each time I chicken out.

“Ryan, say something,” Mom whispers, her eyes shifting between Dad and Rachel.

“Rachel. Earbuds. Out,” Dad orders.

Rachel’s eyes snap up to meet his gaze and she yanks the earbuds out.

“Anyway,” I say, “she’s sleeping in my bed.”

Now all eyes are on me.

There’s a real possibility Julianna might walk down any minute, so I figured it was best to get this out in the open. It was either this or wake her up and sneak her out. Now, with everyone staring at me and Lizzy’s mashed-potato-covered mouth hanging open, I wonder if that wasn’t the better option.

Dad drops his silverware and directs a firm hand toward me to emphasize whatever point he’s about to make. “Son, I know we’ve discussed the importance of using protection, but I figured it went without saying that bringing a girl into our home—into your bedroom!—is out of the question.”

“Ryan!” Mom snaps. “Lizzy, cover your ears. Cody, save it for marriage.”

This is the first dinner conversation Rachel has been interested in for months. She snorts back a laugh.

“It’s not like that,” I say, hardly able to hold back a laugh myself as I realize I should have phrased this better.

Dad’s lips form a stern line. “This is not a laughing matter, Cody.”

“She fell asleep in the living room, okay? While I was working on my art project.”

“Your art put someone to sleep?” Rachel says. “What a surprise.”

“Rachel, cut it out,” Dad barks.

Mom simply looks grateful to have Rachel participating at the dinner table.

“How did she end up in your bed?” Mom asks.

Lizzy’s wide eyes ping-pong from Mom to me.

“I carried her.”

“And she didn’t wake up?” Rachel asks.

“She was pretty out of it,” I say. “I think she isn’t feeling good. Had a fever.”

Mom looks at the clock. “Won’t her parents be worried?”

“They—” I say and pause. “Aren’t home.”

A muscle in Dad’s jaw flinches. He picks up his fork and knife and starts cutting into his meat again. An awkward silence with no end in sight falls over the table.

“Can I have my chocolate milk now?” Lizzy asks. I’m not sure how I figured this conversation would go, but this certainly wasn’t it.

Book Review ~ " The Boadwalk Antiques Shop" by Julie Wright, Melanie Jacobson, Heather B Moore

The Boardwalk Antiques Shop (A Tangerine Street Romance)The Boardwalk Antiques Shop by Julie Wright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Contemporary Clean Romance/Novellas

Book Description:Welcome to Tangerine Street

Tangerine Street is a must-see tourist stop with a colorful mix of one-of-a-kind boutiques, unique restaurants, eclectic museums, quaint bookstores, and renowned bed-and-breakfasts. The Boardwalk Antiques Shop is an exclusive shop where every antique has a story, and each story possesses the gift to match true love. The customer who buys an antique also buys its story and soon discovers that its story unites the past with the present, creating an unexpected romantic future…

“Where Every Antique has a Story”

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: Jennifer is newest owner of The Boardwalk Antiques Shop, inherited from her aunt. When Jennifer arrives in Seashell Beach, her first priority is to meet with a realtor to sell the place. She laughs out loud when she discovers the realtor’s name is Mr. Studly. But the more Jennifer gets to know Paul Studly, the more she finds reasons to stay and run the antiques shop herself.

SOLVING FOR X: Abbie is only a little bit obsessed with antiques, okay, a lot. So when Holden, an out-of-town business executive, tries to purchase the tin soldiers that Abbie’s had her eye on, Abbie refuses to back down. The antiques shop owner issues a challenge: whoever comes up with the best story for wanting the soldiers, will become the new owner. Abbie isn’t about to let some fancy executive beat her out, no matter how charming he is.

A STITCH IN TIME: When Cate learns that antiques dealer Henry Lancaster has purchased the sewing machine left to her by her grandmother, Cate is determined to get it back. What she isn’t counting on is that Henry has just as much claim as Cate. And it doesn’t help that Henry is good-looking and apparently single. Getting to know Henry becomes an unexpected surprise, sending her life into a sudden detour.

My thoughts; I love how the author's have teamed up to create a book with three separate stories set in the same location with crossover of characters.

This book is perfect for the times when you have a short period to read a book. The book has three separate stories that make it easy to spend a short time on a story, but where each story has the same setting it makes it easy to feel like the book is not made of short stories.

I really liked all of the characters. The stories and romance didn't feel rushed. I was very happy with the overall feel of the stories and the setting sounds heavenly.

Note:  I read this book just before I left for a three day baseball tournament my son participated in.  I don't remember the details, but my overall feeling for the book.  I wish that I had taken notes or reviewed it right away.
