Book Review ~ "Devon's Choice" by Catherine Bennett

Devon's ChoiceDevon's Choice by Catherine Bennett
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Book Description:  Life holds no surprises for Devon Murphy. Her life consists of keeping tabs on her aging Irish father, working part time at a coffee shop, and building her online graphics design business. Devon’s only tricky situation is a shallow relationship with the pampered and affluent Michael Turner, who sees her as just another woman to conquer.

Following his father’s death, Brandon’s only goal is to expand the family business and live life on his own terms. That is, until he walks into the coffee shop one snowy evening and meets the enchanting, red-haired barista behind the counter. But can Devon and Brandon’s attraction for each other be strong enough to help erase their deepest disappointments and renew their faith in God?

My thoughtsDevon's Choice is clean a Christian contemporary romance.H

Devon is broken on many levels. She sacrifices her life for her father who suffers from a heart condition. He doesn't take care of himself and so she takes on the responsibility. She puts up with a loser boyfriend, mostly because her father likes him and wants to see her taken care of when he passes.

To me the story was about Devon finding her way. She has gone through the motions for so many years, that she has let many things slide by, particularly her faith.

I liked the characters in this story. I think my favorite was her dad. He's a meddling and lovable father who is stubborn and will live life to the fullest on his terms. His main desire is to see his daughter happy and in a relationship. He knows that he doesn't have much time and doesn't want to to be alone.

I admired Devon sticking up for her values. She was pressured by her ex-boyfriend into premarital sexual relations. It was contrary to the decision and beliefs that she held. I really like reading about characters that are strong enough to say "no" and mean it!

This is a book that is clean and a quick read. I didn't connect with the story well, that's why I gave it a 3 rating. That being said, it was still a good book.

Book Review ~ "Daughter of Helaman" by Misty Moncur

Daughter of Helaman (Stripling Warrior, #1)Daughter of Helaman by Misty Moncur
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source:  I purchased this one.
Genre: LDS Fiction

Book Description: Fighting in Helaman's army is Keturah's deepest desire. Certainly if God can protect a boy, he can protect a girl too. But making it into the ranks turns out to be the easy part, and when Lamanite raiders come to her village, Keturah must put her skills to the test. With danger at every turn, this book will keep you caught up in the fray to the very last page.

My thoughts: I didn't realize until I went to write this review that this was the first in a series. I was disappointed that there wasn't the closure that I wanted, but I'm sure it will all be resolved in the final book, which has already been published.

I enjoyed the character of Keturah. She is a head strong young woman who knows her heart and mind. She doesn't take the easy, safe, or conventional route. She knows that she is meant to fight in a war, but now she needs to convince every one else of that fact.

This book is set in Book of Mormon times. A fight between two enemies is about to take place. It was very interesting to read a book from the perspective of a character set during that time. I hadn't imagined what it must have been like for mother's and warriors in the story of the Stripling Warriors. I came to love the story a little more by reading this book of fiction.

Misty Moncur does a great job of writing. Her story is clean and well written. She was able to pull me into the story and become invested into the characters.

The love triangle was what I wanted closure on. Does Keturah choose the friend she has always know or the soldier who is willing to help her train and follow her heart. Not an easy decision, even though I have a favorite. I really wish I knew how it ends up now instead of sometime in the future! It is Keturah's path to find her future. It will be interesting to follow her on the rest of her journey.

Book Review ~ "Seaside Surprises: A Sweet Romance" by Stacy Claflin

Seaside Surprises: A Sweet Romance (The Seaside Hunters)Seaside Surprises: A Sweet Romance by Stacy Claflin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Description:  Tiffany Saunders is on the run. When she winds up stranded in a seaside town, she wants nothing more than to forget her horrific past and kept moving. But a chance meeting with a handsome local changes everything.

Jake Hunter has some deep emotional scars and is trying to cope with running the family business. The last thing he wants is a relationship—until a mysterious brunette walks into his store and complicates it all.

Tiffany prefers to keep the painful memories of the past where they belong—in her rear view mirror. But dark secrets cannot stay hidden forever. Just as the walls around Tiffany’s heart start to come down, the past catches up with her. Will true love be able to conquer all?

My thoughts: Tiffany is running from her abusive husband. Her goal is to get far away as quickly as possible. She stops in a little tourist town and has car problems. The good part about that is that she gets to spend a little more time with Jake, the guy from the convenience store. He is everything her husband isn't and she can't stay away, even though she knows it would be better if she did.

This was a cute book. I liked Tiffany and Jake. They are two great people who need to find some happiness in life. Their time together is full of outside problems that make it harder for them to find their happily ever after.

The book is clean and looks like it is the first in a series. Jake has brothers who need a little bit of happiness and romance as well.

Book Review ~ "An Uncertain Choice" by Jody Hedlund

An Uncertain Choice by Jody Hedlund
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley (To review)
Genre: Historical Romance

Book Description:  Due to her parents' promise at her birth, Lady Rosemarie has been prepared to become a nun on the day she turns eighteen. Then, a month before her birthday, a friend of her father's enters the kingdom and proclaims her parents' will left a second choice. If Rosemarie can marry before the eve of her eighteenth year, she will be exempt from the ancient vow.

Before long, Rosemarie is presented with the three most handsome and brave knights in the land. But when the competition for her heart seemingly results in a knight playing foul, she begins to wonder if the cloister is the best place after all. If only one of the knights the one who appears the most guilty had not already captured her heart.

My thoughts: I grew up loving medieval stories where the handsome knight fights the bad guys and captures the heart of the fair maiden. This story lived up to my childhood fantasies.

Rosemarie is planning on entering the convent on her 18th birthday. Before her birth, her parents entered into a covenant to have their first born child devote their life in church service. This is a sacred covenant and cannot be broken. There is a catch, if the child falls in love and marries on/before their 18th birthday, they may marry and be excused from church service.

This exception was unknown to Rosemary until one month before her birthday. Her Godfather, the noble knight, comes to give her a choice. He brings three knights with him who have different character and qualities that she may find attractive. He wants her to have a choice and not have regrets later in life.

The three knights were very different and enjoyable to read about. I found each one entertaining in their own way and could see the difficulty of her choice. Each had attributes that complimented her character, but there could only be one to win her heart.

Someone does not want her to choose. There is an antagonist that the reader is not sure who he is until close to the end. I really wasn't surprised by the revelation, but it was still fun to see the characters figure out who he was.

The book has some violence and references to torture methods.  The second book will be coming out in March 0f 2016.  I look forward to reading it. :)

Book Review ~ "The Legacy Human" by Susan Kaye Quinn

The Legacy Human by Susan Kaye Quinn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Source: Received to Review

Book Description:  When transcending humanity is the prize, winning the Game is all that matters.

Seventeen-year-old Elijah Brighton wants to become an ascender—a post-Singularity human/machine hybrid—after all, they’re smarter, more enlightened, more compassionate, and above all, achingly beautiful. But Eli is a legacy human, preserved and cherished for his unaltered genetic code, just like the rainforest he paints. When a fugue state possesses him and creates great art, Eli miraculously lands a sponsor for the creative Olympics. If he could just master the fugue, he could take the gold and win the right to ascend, bringing everything he’s yearned for within reach… including his beautiful ascender patron. But once Eli arrives at the Games, he finds the ascenders are playing games of their own. Everything he knows about the ascenders and the legacies they keep starts to unravel… until he’s running for his life and wondering who he truly is.

My thoughts: Susan Kaye Quinn is a master at writing books that make you think. I have read a few of her books and have yet to be disappointed. She is able to capture my imagination and pull me into her story.

Eli is an artist who works with acrylics. He is talented, but only does his best work when he is in a trance, or fugue. He goes into a fugue in front of his patron and another. This propels him into competing in an art Olympics. If he wins, he will ascend. He will have the opportunity to become an immortal being and save his mother from her illness and imminent death.

This book is set in a futuristic setting. Men have learned to use technology to take their minds and transplant them into bodies. If the body fails they can move to another body. It's a very interesting concept. It questions the basic knowledge of humanity and what it means to be human. Mere mortals are treated basically like pets. They are given the most basic care to survive, nothing to help them thrive.

The games teach him more than how to tap into his art. They teach him about humanity and the one's who have ascended. There are many different agendas, and Eli has to choose which one he wants to support.

The book is written to a YA reader, but does have innuendo.

About the Author (Taken from Goodreads):  Susan Kaye Quinn grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. Her teachers pretended not to notice and only confiscated her stories a couple times.

Susan left writing behind to pursue a bunch of engineering degrees, but she was drawn back to writing by an irresistible urge to share her stories with her niece, her kids, and all the wonderful friends she’s met along the way.

She doesn’t have to sneak her notes anymore, which is too bad.

Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as a much as she can handle.

Book Review ~ "Royal Date" by Sariah Wilson

Royal Date by Sariah Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from the Author to Review
Genre: Contemporary Fairy Tale Romance

Book Description:  This Cinderella didn’t plan on a prince . . .

Kat MacTaggart is a girl who has a plan for everything—including her holiday ski trip to Monterra with her best friend. Everything is going according to plan until she finds herself careening out of control down a mountainside and being rescued by a guy who looks like Superman’s hotter Italian cousin.

HRH Prince Nico is intrigued by the woman he saved on the slopes and her refusal to date him. He offers Kat a deal—let him show her his country and he’ll pay her to write articles that will help Monterra’s tourism industry. Kat agrees, but given her past and lingering distrust of men, she has one condition—absolutely no kissing.

Thanks to the claims of a jealous British noblewoman and the schemes of a meddling paparazzo, Kat’s rule doesn’t seem to be a problem at first. But the more Kat gets to know Nico and the people around him, the harder it is to remember her keep-your-distance plan. Should she stick to it or risk everything for a chance at happily ever after?

My thoughts: I read this book in one sitting. I could not put it down! This is the second book that I have read of Sariah Wilson.  I loved them both. She has a wonderful writing style that drew me in and didn't let me go. (Snarky Sarcasm) She is an author that I will watch for in the future.

Kat is with her friend on vacation at a ski resort when she meets and attractive man she shows no interest in, even though she finds him very attractive. The next time she meets him she is careening down the mountain out of control and he saves her. Not only is he attractive, but he is now her rescuer.

Turns out he is a prince. She recovers in his palace! (Most girls childhood fantasy)

While she is recovering her best friend, Lemon comes up with a plan to help the small country with tourism. Kat needs to date the Prince and then write about her experiences. They will use this forum to market tourism. It is a great plan, other than Kat doesn't want to be come involved with any man. She has a plan for her future, romance is not a part of that plan.

I loved the characters in this story. Kat, Prince Nico, Lemon, the Prince's sisters, the rest of the royal family, were all great characters. They took a girl who had a rough upbringing and made her feel accepted and a part of a family.

This story is a rags to riches story. Kat grew up with a mother who was addicted to crystal meth. She didn't have a family life. She worked for everything that she accomplished. Because of this she is a well rounded and admirable woman. She looked at the life of her mother and tried to do the opposite. Prince Nico was able to see beyond the outer layer and see the woman within.

While the book doesn't have sex in it, there is quite a bit of innuendo and teasing about waiting for marriage  I would recommend to the New Adult age group.

About the Author (taken from Amazon):  Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane, never climbed Mt. Everest, and is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soulmate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters--which is why she writes romance. She has published five happily ever after stories. She grew up in southern California, graduated from Brigham Young University (go Cougars!) with a semi-useless degree in history, and is the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children. She currently lives with the aforementioned soulmate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster that is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers).

Book Review ~ "From the Start" by Melissa Tagg

From the Start by Melissa Tagg
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley (to review)
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Book Description:  Kate Walker used to believe in true love and happily ever after. While her own love life may have left her brokenhearted, it hasn't kept her from churning out made-for-TV romance movie screenplays...until a major career slump and a longing to do something meaningful send her running back to her hometown of Maple Valley.

Permanently sidelined by an injury, former NFL quarterback Colton Greene is temporarily hiding out in a friend's hometown to avoid the media and the reminders of all he's lost. Maple Valley seems like the perfect place to learn how to adjust to normal life. The only trouble is he's never really done normal before.

While Kate plays things safe and Colton is all about big risks and grand gestures, they both get what it's like to desperately need direction in life. An unexpected project gives them both a chance to jumpstart their new lives, but old wounds and new dreams are hard to ignore. Starting over wasn't part of the plan, but could it be the best thing that's ever happened to them?

My thoughtsFrom the Start was very hard for me to put down. I loved the characters and story!

Kate's career as a writer has stalled. She comes home to help out her father when a tornado rips through her small hometown. She is on the verge of changing her direction in life and needs the connection with her family.

Colton's career in the NFL is over. He is also seeking a new direction in his life and takes advantage of the opportunity to help out his friends family in Maple Valley after the tornado.

The two of them never imagined that a town tragedy could help them both find direction and heal from past events in their lives. Their connection happens quickly, but they don't fall instantly in love. Both of them have obstacles to overcome before they can fully let themselves care for another.

I loved the setting of this book. It is a small town where people pitch in and help after a disaster. The residents comes together and pulls everyone into the community and makes them feel at home.

Kate has a loving nature that is the perfect component for helping Colton overcome the tragedies of his childhood. She reaches him and helps him cope and remember events that were pivotal in his life, things he has buried.

There are a few Walker siblings that need a boost to their love lives, it looks like this is the first of a series. I am very excited to read the rest of the Walker family series as it comes available.

This is a clean Christian romance.

Book Review ~ "Lord John's Dilemma" by G.G. Vandagriff

Lord John's Dilemma (Grenville Chronicles Book 2)Lord John's Dilemma by G.G. Vandagriff
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Regency Romance

Book DescriptionWhen Lord John returns from the Battle of Waterloo nursing a serious wound and a case of melancholia, he is hopeful of beginning a happier phase in his life. His sights are set on the lovely Miss Lindsay, his country neighbor’s daughter. But to his mystification, he keeps getting distracted by her family’s governess—a little dab of a thing who is not at all what she seems.
His determination to solve the mystery of Miss Haverley begins to seriously undermine his interest in Miss Lindsay, who is confident he is about to offer for her. In the face of this, how can he pursue his interest in the family governess? Not only must he solve this dilemma, but he must discover what the petite woman is hiding.

When Miss Haverley begs him to resist satisfying his curiosity because such a course could bring her harm, his dilemma doubles. He is more determined than ever to rescue her from whatever demons she is trying to escape, for Miss Haverley alone seems to have the power to stir him to passion and hope for a new life.

My thoughts; Lord John's Dilemma is a sweet regency romance that is great for the times when you want a romance story to get lost in for a little while.

Sir John has recently returned from the Battle of Waterloo. He was injured and decided it was time to settle in the country of the Land he had fought for. He suffers from melancholia and just wants to find some peace in his life. He has his path figured out. He will come home and marry the local girl, Miss Lindsay, who has had a crush on him since she was a young girl.

It doesn't take long for him to realize that his plans and not what he wants. He meets the governess of the Lindsay family and knows that he wants more from life. He wants a happy marriage with a woman he loves and admires.

Delia is hiding from her uncle who wants has promised her to a man who only wants her inheritance. The job of governess protects her identity and is the last place her uncle will think to look for her.

The story is pretty straightforward. A couple who do not want to find each other, but do at a very inconvenient time in their life. The dilemma of falling in love and knowing that you can not have the person of your affections.

The book is very clean and can be read an enjoyed by anyone of any age who enjoys a light regency romance.

Scheduled to release Fall of 2015!

About the Author:  J. Scott Savage is the author of the Farworld middle grade fantasy series and the Case File 13 middle grade monster series. He has been writing and publishing books for over ten years. He has visited over 400 elementary schools, dozens of writers conferences, and taught many writing classes. He has four children and lives with his wife Jennifer and their Border Collie, Pepper, in a windy valley of the Rocky Mountains.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
********************

Like many of my books, the inspiration for my new series Fires of Invention came from the collision of two ideas. The first time the story occurred to me was while I was watching the musical Wicked with my wife. The moment I walked into the theater and saw the huge mechanical dragon above the stage, I thought, Wow! I have to write a story about that! A few weeks later, I was talking with my nephew, who is probably the most creative kid I know, but whose inventiveness often gets him into trouble, and I thought, What if a kid who had the talents of my nephew lived in a world where creativity was against the law? What if the kids were building . . . a steam-powered dragon? Bam! I had my story.

Powered by great feedback from my agent, Michael Bourret, my good friend and author James Dashner, my publisher, Chris Schoebinger, and the song “Warriors” by Imagine Dragons, I wrote the entire first draft of the first volume in the series, Mysteries of Cove in four weeks. This book is unlike anything I have ever written. There are elements of City of Ember, Dragon Riders, and Hugo in it all mashed up together in a world I fell in love with from the moment I started writing.

I think what’s most exciting to me about this book is that it’s about giving yourself the freedom to imagine. To take chances. Too often we limit ourselves by only trying things we’re confident we can succeed at when what we need to do is give ourselves permission to fail. Often it is when we attempt things with no idea of how we can possibly pull them off that we achieve our greatest successes.
