Scents and Senses: Supernatural Friends. What the fairy tales didn’t tell you.

Playing the role of a knight in shining armor is more complicated than it seems in the storybooks, as sixteen-year-old Joy discovers when she repeatedly comes to the rescue of a fifteen-year-old human. But when she meddles in the girl’s social life, Starra sends her packing. Starra is determined to completely dissociate herself from the subterranean creature that has manipulated her life and cast her into the limelight. However, her resolve is soon tested when she becomes involved in a critical situation where supernatural assistance can enable her to carry out a daring plot. Eventually, Starra’s involvement with her new other-wordly friends extracts a heavy price when she is beset by challenges that range from the down- to-earth struggles of a typical teenage student, to the realm of the fantastic. Nothing prepares her, however, for the ultimate challenge.

Joy Ever since I’ve been old enough to kick off on a condor with my own two chicken feet, I’ve been drilled to mind my own business. Mind your own business, the first of the American Ten Commandments. It’s not one I subscribe to, even though in our community, not minding my own business means more than social suicide; it’s a crime when we ascend above ground. For thousands of years we deeems have kept away from the creatures running over our heads with their five-toed feet. So if anyone in my community gets wind of the risky job I’m on these days, I’m practically a goner. But that doesn’t stop me from shadowing a certain teenage fivetoe. There’s also a totally different occupational hazard involved in this position I’ve created for myself, one I’m suffering from right now: this job occasionally makes school seem relatively stimulating. Yawn. I’ve played too many Angry Condor games to count since Starra got involved in some fantasy book a couple of hours ago and lost contact with the real world. Even if I knew how to become visible to the fivetoe eye and suddenly revealed myself, I bet she wouldn’t notice me, the cute teen perched on her windowsill. Time simply refuses to advance, and I have to resort to counting the spider eggs cocooned in their nest on a nearby tree branch. A sudden sigh interrupts my lame occupation. There’s a starry look in the big eyes, and I notice the novel is slipping out of Starra’s dreamy grip. This is my window of opportunity! I finger the starchy edge of the book jacket and coax the book forward. Thud. The book falls to the floor, and the movement seems to bring Starra back to her senses. At last she grabs a hoodie and sets out, probably for one of her night excursions on the Vista Del Mar Path. Are we running or biking tonight? Running it is. I jog behind her, finding the excursion by the shoreline an improvement to watching her read. At least we are moving. She runs for half an hour, at a speed faster than the sea turtle pace usual for fivetoes. Then she slows to a stop at a jagged rock, half-submerged in the ocean. I groan quietly and contemplate leaving. From experience, I know she’ll climb to the top of her rock and dream away. I start backing off, but when I’m some fifty feet away, I look back. Starra makes a pretty picture there, her silhouette perched high on the rock. Her long legs are tucked under her, and her head hangs back as she keeps her gaze on the stars above. If only she would let loose the heavy dark mane of hair she always twists up at the back of her neck, she would truly look like a mermaid risen from the sea. Something pulls me back to her. I can’t explain it, but I have a feeling trouble is lurking nearby, waiting to snatch her in its net. My chicken feet make an about face and follow Starra home as she takes the shorter route through town.

Author Loren Secretts Loren Secretts was raised in a book-filled home, in a sleepy east coast suburb of the US. These factors are undoubtedly responsible for her early design of a number of exciting imaginary worlds that she could escape to from time to time during her childhood. In her teen years, between schoolwork and lending an ear to her friends, Loren had less opportunity to go AWOL. Instead, her experience as a confidant to others inspired her to major in psychology in college and earn her M.A. in the field on the west coast. As an adult, Loren has found fulfillment in her work with children and families for more than a decade. Her passion for writing was revived when she discovered that she enjoyed delving into the human psyche to write psychological reports. But clients' reports are safe with Loren, who guards secrets fastidiously. Indeed, one of her aspirations is to work as a psychotherapist for the CIA, but since she now lives with her family in Canada, that dream will have to await its turn…

Book Review ~ "Smith: The Story of a Pickpocket" by Leon Garfield

Smith: The Story of a PickpocketSmith: The Story of a Pickpocket by Leon Garfield
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Classic Middle Grade Historical Fiction

Book Description: Seconds after twelve-year-old Smith picks the bulging pocket of an old gentleman, he hears footsteps in Curtis Alley, his planned path of escape. Two men in brown appear, and from the doorway where he is hiding, Smith witnesses the murder and violent search of his victim. Terrified, he flees the scene of the crime.

A quarter of a mile off Smith stops. What has he stolen that is worth the life of a man? He stares at his loot bitterly. It is a document—and Smith cannot read.

Leon Garfield’s crisp, exuberant writing brings new excitement and high adventure to the genre of historical fiction. The Who’s Who of Children’s Literature has called Smith “a graphic, breathtaking picture of England—and particularly London—with a handful of memorable, larger-than-life characters.”

My thoughts: I am very happy that The New York Review is taking classic books and giving them another opportunity to be introduced to a new generation of readers. The books are beautiful.

Smith is twelve and living in eighteenth century London. He is a pickpocket. He is quick and hard to catch. He takes pleasure in his skill and stealth.

One day his picks his mark and empties the older man's pockets. Immediately the man is set upon by two men wearing brown, he is killed and his body searched. The killers did not find what they were looking for. Smith discovers that he has not walked away with money, but with a document instead. The problem for Smith is that he doesn't know how to read.

Taking the document back to his home in the cellar of a tavern. He and his sisters decide to try to find out what is in the document. They are sure that it will lead to some kind of a pay off for pockets.

Turns out that the document brings more trouble than it's worth to Smith. He is chased and imprisoned.

This book is full of adventure. I loved that they author gave the reader the feel of an older century London. The hero is a young boy, who is barely surviving and lives using his wits. This is sure to catch the imagination of new readers.

I found myself caught up in the story and wondering what awaited Smith around the corner. He is deceived and betrayed, but still the young man uses his brain and outwits those around him.

The book has an older feel, it was originally published in 1967. The writing style has a more classic feel to it. Even thought the writing style is different than children read today, the book is easy to follow and understand.

After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job. But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. Fun, compelling, and romantic, Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. Book Review ~ "Bright Blue Miracle" by Becca Wilhite

Bright Blue MiracleBright Blue Miracle by Becca Wilhite
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: I purchased this one!
Genre: Contemporary YA

Book Description: Seventeen-year-old Leigh Mason is not sure she's ready to share her mom, her bedroom, and her little sisters with her new stepsister, Betsy. And she's definitely not ready to share her best friend, who happens to be a boy! Coping with a blended family is not easy for either Leigh or Betsy, especially during their senior year in high school. Each step brings them nearer to a crisis that will either send them running in different directions or bind them firmly together (which, let's face it, would take a miracle).Bright Blue Miracle is a new young adult novel that has everything a girl wants: a hero (more specifically, a really cute boy), a villain (who happens to be a stepsister), comedy, despair, pedicures, ice cream, love, hate, tennis, revenge, and, of course, a couple of surprises that might send you for some tissues.

My thoughts: This book has sat on my shelf for quite a while. I kept looking at it and look forward to the day when I would find a spare day or two to read it. I loved Becca Wilhite's book, My Ridiculous, Romantic Obsessions.

This story is very different from the other. This book is not as much a comedy as a coming of age story. Leigh is seventeen. She has faced crisis that would be hard for someone older and more mature. She has weathered the storms and now is facing one of the hardest yet, her mother is getting married and she will have a step-sister. She feels as if her father's memory is being betrayed.

This book deals with hard situations. Unfortunately, many youth face similar trials. The book looks at blended families, death, love, jealousy, acceptance, and sickness. It seemed a little weird that Leigh's best friend becomes Betsy's (the step-sister) boyfriend. Becca Wilhite is able to make an awkward situation work and it did add a layer of depth to the story.  I really liked that even though it was written from Leigh's point of view, you could capture the feelings of the other character's.  I loved that Leigh learned hard lessons that brought her a greater understanding of her place in the family and the way that attitude can lighten or darken her life.

The writing is engaging and is well paced. This is another great story from Becca. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Book Review ~ "Witch Finder" by Ruth Warburton

Witch Finder (Witch Finder, #1)Witch Finder by Ruth Warburton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Netgalley
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal

Book Description: London. 1880. In the slums of Spitalfields apprentice blacksmith Luke is facing initiation into the Malleus Maleficorum, the fearsome brotherhood dedicated to hunting and killing witches.

Luke’s final test is to pick a name at random from the Book of Witches, a name he must track down and kill within a month, or face death himself. Luke knows that tonight will change his life forever. But when he picks out sixteen-year-old Rosa Greenwood, Luke has no idea that his task will be harder than he could ever imagine.

My thoughts: Luke has a recurring nightmare. Every night he relives watching his parents die from witchcraft. In his mind everyone who wields magic is evil and dangerous to society. He seeks initiation into a secret group whose goal is to rid the world of witches, one at a time, by killing them.

He randomly selects a name, Rosa Greenwood. His life will be forever changed when he accepts the challenge. He discovers that things are not clear cut, killing someone is harder than he thought it would be.

There were a few things that I really liked in this book. One is that it is easy to judge people by the acts of a few. In this case, all witches are considered bad. The reality is that there are some who are power hungry, ruthless, greedy, etc, when in fact most are good people. I liked that Luke is loyal. He cares deeply for his family and friends. He is a kind person, he also learns that Rosa has a similar personality. I liked that class distinctions were overlooked and that the quality of a person was emphasized.

This book started a little slow and picked up the pace as the story progressed. I really began to like some of the characters. There are some who are very bad people. There is violence and swearing in the book. It is hard to read a few of the scenes. They are graphic enough to cause me discomfort, I understood the need for them in the book. There are dark concepts and situations.

I would not recommend this book to anyone under 16 years of age.

Book Review ~ "John Dreamer" by Elise Celine

John DreamerJohn Dreamer by Elise Celine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Teen Fiction

Book Description: Andy wasn’t usually sure about much, but she was absolutely certain this was the weirdest day of her life as she stood stranded in the middle of a great white room with six strangers. Well, they were mostly strangers. She could have sworn she’d seen the guy with the green eyes before, and maybe that was why he kept staring at her.

When a man calling himself the Guardian appeared and said they had come to make their deepest dreams come true, they embark on an adventure none of them ever imagined, and the consequences of their actions would change them forever.

My thoughts: Andy finds herself alone in a great white room. She notices seven chairs, one has her name on it. One by one, newcomers are added until there are seven teens in the room, wondering why they are there.

Andy feels a connection to one boy named John. She feels as if she somehow knows him, but doesn't want to let down her guard to find out why. The rest of the group is eclectic. Each one is unique and they all don't hit it off from the start.

Now the guardian is added. He is a character and very cryptic. He doesn't answer questions directly, he leaves the teens with more questions. He basically tells them that they have to work together to help out with each other's dreams. Just as they came, one by one, the teens abruptly leave at the conclusion of each dream/test.

I found this book to be very interesting. The teens are all faced with a trial that deals with them individually. Each dream is a pivotal point that can help them achieve goals or bring them down in their life. As each teen faces their fears, the reader learns more about them and the reasons why they need help. There are many underlying psychological lessons in the book.  The book ends as abruptly as it began, but the kids leave with tools to help them in life.

#DailyDeal from Tamera Alexander & excerpt from "A Beauty So Rare"

Yes, I am posting for a second time today about "A Beauty So Rare".  I wanted to share with you an excerpt  that I liked in the book. To set up the quote, Eleanor Braddock is in a unique position, she is able to help the widows and children left behind after the Civil War.  She is talking to Marcus, who happens to be her love interest about why it's important for her to help them.

********************

"What is it," he asked, "that you most appreciate about doing what you do?"

"With the widows and children, you mean."

He nodded.

She stared at the open blooms. "Watching them leave after dinner with stomachs and hearts full."  She closed her eyes, a slight frown forming.  "And....witnessing their courage.  Every day.  Evan as they carry a weight of  grief and pain.  I never knew any of their husbands, and yet.... sometimes I feel as though I did.  Or do.  Because, despite having departed this word, they're still here, in so many ways.  I can't imagine what it's like to live with that grief."

Excerpt:
********************
“I’ve only filed three police reports, but I’m sure I can lay half a dozen more attacks at this bugger’s door.” He ran his hand through his hair to corral his frustration. “What about fingerprints on the hammer? Have you identified anything in the clothes left behind?” Somehow, the single untouched wall with women’s clothing stapled all over it like some kind of macabre trophy wall was more disturbing than the vicious holes his saboteur left everywhere else.

“It’s one of your own hammers kept in a tool box with a broken lock. Anybody could have handled it. I’ll be surprised if they find a viable print, although the clothes might reveal something.” Jack heaved a long suffering sigh. “We’ve barely had time to catalogue the evidence since you called us this morning. We’re not exactly sitting on our thumbs, no matter what you think.”“What I think is it’s becoming more and more difficult to keep my problems under wraps.”

“Well, you wouldn’t know it after reading that sweet, full-page feature the Denver Post ran on you yesterday.” Jack picked up the newspaper section sitting on the corner of Patrick’s desk and read the headline aloud, “‘No Thorns in Thorne Enterprise’s Rosy Future’. According to this you’re ‘a new contractor barely in his thirties with a Midas touch who’s made it to the major leagues with the multi-million dollar, upscale Villas at Three Oaks Ranch’. You must have really schmoozed that reporter, bro.”

“The headline would have read something radically different,” Patrick replied sourly, “if she’d dug a little deeper and uncovered the truth.”

Angry again at the thought of what he stood to lose, he reached across the desk, snatched the newspaper out of Jack’s hand, and threw it into a wire basket for his office manager, Jane Brown, to file. “You know what I’ve been dealing with these last few months,” he said. “Vandals tag building sites. Supplies go missing. Equipment breaks down.

“But this is different, Jack. You saw those walls at Southgate. This isn’t kids on a lark, pissing out territorial boundaries.”

“I agree. But as my captain pointed out, I’m a little close to the situation and I’m not on the case.”

Patrick barked a harsh laugh. “What does this guy have to do before the department takes this seriously? Leave a dead body?”

“It might take just that,” Jack retorted. “Right now we’re up to our armpits in what’s rolled downhill from the mayor’s office after the kidnapping of that councilman’s daughter last week.”

If it weren’t for the radios blasting all day on his sites Patrick wouldn’t keep up with local events but even he’d heard about the coed who’d disappeared while he was in Cheyenne. “She’s been gone, what, four days? Do you have any leads?”

“We don’t even have a ransom note. After a co-worker dropped her off at her apartment complex, it’s like the girl disappeared into thin air.”

Patrick saw Jack’s jaw tighten, a sign of the increasing stress he’d been under in recent months. “You think she’s a victim of the Angel Killer, don’t you?”

The local news media had dubbed the serial killer with the name because of the angel tattoo he’d burned into each of the girls he brutally killed. He remembered Jack’s fury, as one of the detectives on the task force, over the leak of that critical piece of information.

The Author

Karen Docter writes two different kinds of romance novels....Contemporary Romantic Comedy w/a Karen Docter: Romance...With a Kick of Humor!
Romantic Suspense w/a K.L. Docter: Women hunted by killers...men who'd die to protect them.

Karen's contemporaries are cute romantic comedies. She loves writing about real men and women with dreams and goals that don't allow for a relationship just so she can throw them in each other's path...with a tickle and a smile. Her romantic suspense novels (as K.L. Docter) are also filled with romance, although the dangers the hero and heroine face are intense, usually because a serial killer is bent on ending one or both of their lives before they can fall in love. These are psychological, woman-in-jeopardy stories.

Karen's an award winning author, a four-time Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart® finalist, and won the coveted Kiss of Death Romance Writers Daphne du Maurier Award Category (Series) Romantic Mystery Unpublished division. When she's not saving her characters from death and destruction or helping them fall in love, she loves camping and fishing with her family, reading, gardening & cooking.
If she can do most of those things over a campfire, all the better!
