Free Novella~ Summer of Dreams by Elizabeth Camden

Summer of Dreams by Elizabeth CamdenSummer of Dreams by Elizabeth Camden
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Source: Free for Amazon Kindle
Gernre: Historical Fiction/Romance

Book Description:  The daughter of a powerful army general, Evelyn White vows she will never marry a man in uniform. Which is why Clyde Baxter, a West Point cadet on the verge of graduation, presents a problem. Their attraction is instantaneous, but it threatens Evelyn's lifelong dream of going to college.

Clyde's brilliance in the new field of electrical power has him poised for a promising career in the Army's Corps of Engineers. The one thing he never anticipated was Evelyn White, a woman whose soaring ambition matches his own.

As they fall in love over the course of one magical summer, they believe dreams are enough to weather any challenge. But when they are tested by forces neither saw coming, will the fragile bonds forged during those dream-filled summer days be strong enough to survive the storm?

My thoughts: This is a novella that I "purchased" for FREE from Amazon. It is a prequel to a novel that I will be reading soon, From This Moment.

This story is about a West Point Cadet, Clyde, and an independent minded young woman, Evelyn. She wants to go to school and study Engineering, but as a General's daughter that path is forbidden to her. Clyde is a brilliant engineer that has a hard time obeying all of the rules and finds himself with demerits.

To work off demerits he has to help the General's daughter with her "birdhouse". The scope of the project comes as a surprise and he finds friendship and love unexpectedly.

The story is about love, acceptance, and honor. I would have liked to see more character development, but this was a novella. I hope that I will read more of Clyde and Evelyn in the full length novel that is about Romulus. He is eccentric and I look forward to finding out more about him .

Four Chambers by Julie Wright

Four Chambers by Julie WrightFour Chambers by Julie Wright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received to Review
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Description:  From the Power of the Matchmaker series:

Every time Andra Stone crosses paths with Everett Covington, trouble follows. First she loses her scholarship. Then she loses the apartment she’d wanted more than anything. But tragedy hits hardest when she loses her grandmother—the best friend Andra has ever known. She determines that Everett is a talisman of ill fortune. When Everett comes to work in her hospital and is applying for the same position she’d been working toward since residency, Andra believes him to be her personal poltergeist.

The human heart has four chambers—four chances to get it right. Andra has only one chance left.

My thoughts: Andra and Everett have been study buddy's and competition for each other since pre-med. They compliment each other but have a long drawn out history. Their story lines are intertwined, they have been there for pivotal moments of each other's lives. Through all of it there has always been a bond of friendship that has bolstered them.

Andra is working to be a heart surgeon. The heart has four chambers. Two receive and two pump out. The chambers can represent the relationship between Andra and Everett. They receive and they give to each other. But they have pride and the drive to succeed that come between them on multiple occasions. It will take all four chambers to work together in order for them to come together. In this case, the fourth time is the charm?

This is another book from the Power of the Matchmaker Series. Each of them stands alone, but when all of them are read, it creates a whole picture of Pearl, the Matchmaker. She has a magical way of bringing couples together. It's nice to think of someone there cheering on couples and helping them find each other.

The book was frustrating for me at times because the characters knew what they wanted, but they let unimportant things get in the way. It took YEARS from the time they met until they were ready to move into the relationship that the reader knew was best for them. I loved the concern and care they had for people around them and the children that were their patients.  I just wish they showed a little more kindness and compassion to each other for most of the story.  They are forgiving to others, not so much to each other.

This book is a clean romance with kissing.

A Date with Danger by Kari Iroz~ I LOVED this book! (+ tour giveaway)

A Date with DangerA Date with Danger by Kari Iroz
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Received from Publisher to Review
Genre:  LDS Suspense/Romance

Book Description:  She just wanted to shake up her love life. Jacklyn (Jack) Wyatt is the typical twenty-five-year-old living the typical Provo single life with the typical bad luck—at least until the FBI recruits her for a completely different type of dating.
A young woman has gone missing, and all signs point to her online dating profile as the kidnapper’s operating ground. But when suspects who crossed paths with the missing girl begin contacting Jack, the FBI sees its opportunity for an inside man—er, woman.
Now Jack will have to play the field, dating each of the men in an attempt to weed out the kidnapper. But with such an unusual array of characters vying for her attention, pinpointing the culprit may prove even harder than finding Mr. Right. And as more young women disappear, will Jack stay professional and objective, even with the handsome Special Agent Damon Wade just a whisper in her hidden microphone away?

My thoughts: I loved this book. The main character, Jack, was one of my favorite characters to date. Her snarky and humorous personality really made the book a pleasure to read.

Jack (aka Jaclyn) is twenty-five living in Provo, Utah. She is single and half-heatedly dating. She goes through the motions but doesn't expect a lot from the guys she goes out with. She is self-deprecating and doesn't have high self-esteem. She comforts herself with food and isn't ashamed of it. It's her sarcasm that really came through the pages and the fact that she doesn't conform to others expectations that made her so lovable to me.

Jack's sister made a profile for her on an on-line dating site. The men who are interested in going out with her showed interest in a woman who has disappeared. The connection seems to be the web interest. Jack is asked to be a civilian "spy" to see if they can apprehend the kidnapper before he can "strike again."

I know when I was dating several years ago, I went on some very bad dates, but Jack's experiences really are horrible. The book is almost a catalog of the worst dates imaginable. I know that I cringed at many of the men that she found herself with. The bright spot was the FBI agent who was taking care of her. Damon is the stable part of the characters. He handles her personality well. They are opposites and in this book opposites do attract.

The book does have mystery and suspense. Time is running out to try to find the kidnapped victim. There is a little bit of violence, some innuendo, and kissing. The book is set with LDS characters. Religion is a part of the story and important to some of the characters. I didn't find it preachy, but more of a soul-searching aspect. Two people trying to figure out what is important to them in their lives.

I read this book in one day. I didn't want to put it down, even when I had meetings that I needed to attend.

Chemistry Lessons by Rebecca H. Jamison

Chemistry Lessons by Rebecca H. JamisonChemistry Lessons by Rebecca H. Jamison
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received from Author to Review
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Description:  Everyone in Lone Spur knows Rosie will accept even the most unlovable animal into her life. Men, though, are a different story.
Take Destry, the guy who bought the ranch next door. Sure, he’s handsome and wealthy, but he wears flip-flops to work his fields. Not that Rosie should worry about him getting hurt.
Her biggest concern is that she needs to buy her grandfather’s ranch before her uncle sells it out from under her. The problem is that on her teacher’s salary, she doesn’t qualify for a loan. Her long-time boyfriend, Tanner, proposes a solution—they can get married and qualify for a loan together, only Rosie isn’t sure if her heart is with her faithful fiancĂ©, her ranch, or her swoon-worthy neighbor.

My thoughts: I loved the double meaning of the title. Both of the main characters are high school science teachers and then there is the aspect of the chemistry of attraction. It was a fun association for me to make in my head.

Rosie is a lot like the science that she teaches. She looks at the practical aspects of a relationship. It's not emotional. She was hurt as a teen and looks at life like a science experiment. She accepts a marriage proposal because it is a safe relationship. She respects him and is friends with him, so therefore it would make good for a good marriage. She takes out the human factor and analyzes too much.

Destry is the next door neighbor who she is reluctantly attracted to. She doesn't want to be attracted to him. After all, she is in a practical relationship. Who wants the thrill of touching another and having your heart race? He challenges what she believes about herself and what she thinks a relationship should be.

I enjoyed this book. I loved that the characters challenged each other and experienced growth as they came to know and understand each other. Destry and Rosie are good people trying to put others before themselves.

This book is a clean romance with some kissing.I enjoyed the pacing and the plot.

TRY, TRY AGAIN by Aubrey Mace

She believes he’s just on the rebound, and they slowly drift apart. Six months later, Sarah still can’t stop thinking about what might have been. She ropes her friend into taking a road trip to visit Justin, hoping for a second chance. When Justin sees her, he wants answers, and Sarah has to decide if she’s brave enough to finally tell him the truth.

My thoughts: Whenever I read one of the "Timeless Romance Anthologies" I am amazed at the creativity and the broad ideas that come from a theme. The stories are contemporary, but Sarah Eden's has a regency twist. I have to admit that I had a huge smile when I read that one.

I do not think that I have ever had anything negative to say about the collections produced for this series. The author's are talented and produce quality work. For me it is a a given that I will pick up any and every "Timeless Romance Anthology" that I can get my hands on.

This collection has six stories that center with unexpected love that stems from a road trip. (One story isn't completely unexpected). The stories are sweet romance. The characters begin the relationship on the trip and that is where the story ends, at the beginning of a forming relationship. I like that they didn't have an ending of marriage within a very short period of time. The hope of "a happily ever after" is left to the readers imagination.

The stories are novellas. The perfect length when you need a story to fit in a short period of time, at the pool with the kids, nap-time, etc. The stories are clean and fun to read.

The Time Key by Melanie Bateman

Time-Key-blog-tour-banner

The Time KeyThe Time Key by Melanie Bateman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: Received digit copy from publisher to review.
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Book Description:  When Stanley saves a man, he's given a mysterious device that allows him to travel through time. But he soon learns that changing his past doesn't necessary lead to a better future. Traveling over 100 years into the future may be the only way Stanley can change his fate and save his family.

My thoughts: I enjoyed Melanie Bateman's story on time travel. The story is fresh and full of interesting characters. Many of them are not human.

The story his told as a narrative. The narrator sometimes gets ahead of him/her self and has to remember to get back to the story instead of skipping ahead. In some ways the style reminded me of "A Series of Unfortunate Events". I thought it worked well and was a great way to tell the story.

Stanley is a widower who has spent the past six years drinking. He wants to forget the pain of loosing his wife and daughter, but drowning his sorrows hasn't worked well for him. In a moment when he is about to end everything, he becomes a hero and ends up with the Time Key. A watch that gives him the ability to move around in time. With his new possession comes peril to himself and those he cares about. He is also given a gift that helps him move in a positive direction. Her name is Lena and she is a vaelie , a person of childhood fantasy.

I was impressed with the depth of the story. There are many events that keep interest throughout the story. The pacing was well done. The story is set in the late 1890's. The mode of transportation is carriages and horses. In one scene in the story Stanley travels 40 years to the future and sees the devastation of war with aircraft dropping bombs. It added a new perspective.

This book can appeal to many ages. It is clean with some violence. I would suggest to tweens and above.  The book contained illustrations which also adds appeal for younger readers.

Beyond the Rising Tide by Sarah Beard (Blog Tour + giveaway)

Beyond the Rising Tide by Sarah Beard
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Source: Received digital copy from publisher to review
Genre: YA Contemporary.

Book Description:  Kai met Avery only once--in the moment he died saving her life. Now when he's not using his new healing powers to help people, he watches helplessly as Avery's life is unraveled by his death. To help her, he risks everything by breaking the rules, dangerously blurring the barriers between life and death.

My thoughts: It's hard to try to describe the emotions of this book in a review. It is beautifully written and follows the story of two teenagers who are hurting. The book is fictional, but the issues that the two are dealing with are real. The circumstances of their introduction to each other was tragic and leads to this story that is full of healing and selflessness.

Kai died six months earlier when he saved Avery's life. He has watched her  struggle  to live her life. More than anything he wants to heal her and give her a reason to live a happy life. Avery feels guilt and pain. She has stopped doing the activities that she loves and feels that she has no reason to be happy when a boy died to save her.

One thing that impressed me about this story is that Sarah Beard didn't sugar coat the issues the teens were facing or their emotional reaction to them. The underlying message of this book is one of hope. It also is a book about service. Doing things for others can help a person to heal. Sometimes life may seem bleak, but it can get better. This is a lesson learned by some of the adults in the story too.

The book uses two imperfect teens to tell a brilliant story.  While the format uses angelic intervention to make change, the angel is a boy who just wants to make things better.  I don't think Kai realized the impact that helping Avery would have on him.  In this case, a human girl made a big difference to an angel and gave him the courage to face his past.

The book has some delicate issues. Physical abuse, drug abuse, and suicide are included in this book. I would feel comfortable letting my kids read this story.

********************

(Kai’s point of view)

I’m not sure if I have a heart, but something in my ribcage swells at the sight of Avery. Her hair shimmers like spun gold in the sunlight, falling over her shoulder and hiding her face. She’s sitting on a sheet of black rock, head bent, and the flowery skirt of her sundress ripples in the breeze.
If she turns around, she’ll see me. If I speak, she’ll hear my voice. I open my mouth to do that, but it’s parched, hit with an unexpected drought of words.
I’ve been walking for hours, and I still don’t have a solid plan. I have an end goal, but it’s like looking up at the peak of a mountain when I’m still in the valley. I want Avery to find happiness again, but I have no idea how to get her there.
Luckily, improvising is what I’m best at. Writing songs on the fly, talking myself out of trouble, and ad-libbing life in general. When I had a life, I was dropped into a new environment every few months with no time for planning. Survival depended on my ability to improvise, because it was the only way to keep my head above water.
As I inch toward Avery, I turn phrases over in my mind, trying to choose the best way to introduce myself. I hate to think how she’ll react if she recognizes me, but I doubt she will. I saw her run across my picture on a missing persons report once, and she scanned right past it. Besides, I saw my reflection in the shop window this morning, and although my face is the same, I don’t exactly look like myself with my new Jack Frost hair.
Over her shoulder, I see she’s holding a fishing net in her lap. Her fingers are working with it like she’s trying to free something. A crab. Her hands tremble as she tries to unravel it, so she’s not really getting anywhere.
Without thinking, I fish the pocketknife from my shorts, unfold the blade, and lower it in front of her in offering. She flinches and whips around to look at me, eyes wide.
So much for improvising.
I nod toward the tangled mess in her lap. “For the crab.” Yes. Those are the words I’ve waited six months to speak to her. If Charles comes in the next moment to take back his ring, at least I can live in eternal peace knowing I was able to utter those three words.
Her brows pinch together, then she shakes her head and turns back to the crab. “I’m trying to free him, not eat him.”
For a few breaths, I’m speechless. In awe that she just talked to me. She can see me. And hear me. If I reach out and touch her shoulder, she’ll feel my fingertips on her skin. I don’t, of course. I’ve scared her enough for one day.
“I know,” I say, trying to keep my voice soft and non-threatening. I crouch down and offer the knife again, this time handle first. “It’s for the net.”
Her hands go still, and then she smiles sheepishly. “Oh. Right.”
She takes the knife and goes to work, biting her lower lip as she concentrates on plucking away strands of netting. I wonder why she’s going to so much trouble to free a half-dead crab, but I say nothing because for some reason it seems really important to her.
The knife makes her task easier, but when the crab is free, she frowns at the water, swallowing hard. Seeing the reluctance in her face, I stand and open my hand. “Here. I’ll throw it in.”
She deposits the crab in my palm, and I carry the newly liberated creature to where the waves are pitching against the rock. I toss it back home, and it disappears beneath the marbled surface.
When I turn back, Avery is standing with her arms twined around her waist. As I stroll toward her, the wind kicks up and sends golden strands of hair flying around her. With the way she’s standing there on the rocks, she looks like some kind of mythical siren. I feel just as scared as if she were one, just as bewitched. The haunting song in her eyes lures me in until I’m standing right in front of her. She gazes up at me a long moment, searching my face as if she’s hunting for familiarity. For a minute I worry she recognizes me. But then she folds the knife and hands it back.
